My heart freezes as I stare at the text from Sera, her message sending a chill down my spine: "Orion's house burned down. Everyone okay. Call when you can."
The flat tire we're dealing with suddenly seems like the least of our problems.
"What's wrong?" Kael asks, his keen eyes catching my expression.
"I need to call Sera." I walk a few steps away from the kids, who are currently entertained by a game of I Spy while we wait for roadside assistance.
Sera picks up on the second ring. "Hey."
"What happened to Orion's house?" I demand, my voice a harsh whisper.
"Someone burned it down. The whole place is ashes." There's a strange thudding sound in the background, followed by what sounds like breaking glass.
"What was that?" I ask, alarmed.
"Nothing important," Sera says casually. "Just clearing up an infestation."
A male voice screams in the background.
"Is that a person?" I hiss.
"Like I said, an infestation." Sera's tone remains eerily calm. "Don't worry about it."
