I run as fast as my human legs allow, heart hammering against my ribs. The sound of Milo's scream tears through me, making my maternal instincts flare with panic. Dammit, I'm too slow—too human.
When I reach the elderly couple's RV, I see Sera pulling Milo away from the door. His face is sheet-white, his eyes wide with horror. The moment he spots me, he breaks free from Sera's grip and runs straight into my arms.
"They're dead," he chokes out against my shirt. "Henry and Beatrice—they're just sitting there... dead!"
I clutch him tightly, feeling his small body trembling uncontrollably. "What happened?"
"I don't know," he sobs. "I was just looking for the dog and—and I found them. They're just sitting there on the couch. Their eyes are open but they're not... they're not there."
Orion steps out of the RV, his massive frame blocking the doorway. "Milo," he says gently, "they aren't dead. Not exactly."
