*Kael's POV*
The highway stretched before me, an endless ribbon cutting through the landscape. Rain pounded the windshield in rhythmic waves, almost soothing in its predictability. Almost.
I glanced at the fast food bag on the passenger seat. Grease had already soaked through the bottom, but I didn't care. My thoughts weren't on the burgers I'd grabbed for the kids or the salads Hazel preferred. They were on the small paper bag tucked beside them.
A blueberry muffin. Just one.
I'd spotted it in the display case while waiting for our order. The rich, purple-blue of the berries had immediately made me think of Hazel's scent – that delicate blend of vanilla and rain and something uniquely hers. Something that had become as necessary to me as breathing.
"Fuck," I muttered, shaking my head at my own sentimentality. The Lycan King, reduced to buying pastries because they reminded him of a girl. If Jax could see me now, he'd never let me live it down.
