Chapter 1 - Chosen

Alex Hayden lived a slightly eventful life as he's been through multiple things. He's a Former Soldier who served in the military, but only for nine years before he was able to leave the Military. Alex served in the US Army and after he left the Army, Alex decided he'd enjoy his time outside of the Army. However, being 27 years old and having served in the Army for nine years, it took some adjusting. But now that he got used to the non-military lifestyle he chose, he was able to live peacefully. But all of that was ruined by increasing tensions across the globe leading to a War that most saw coming. The Third World War. Alex did contemplate about going back to the Army, but he had to deal with other issues in his personal life. His parents were both killed in a bombing attack leading him to truly be alone. He was an only child, so he didn't have brothers or sisters.

All he had was himself, he didn't even have any friends as they either moved on without him or just stopped being his friend. Not that he minded to be honest. Alex expected something like this to happen eventually. In his free time, Alex does some exploring and hiking. Currently, he was in a forest in North America just wandering. He stumbles upon a cave and debates whether he should go inside. He decides he will go inside after a moment of debating and so he heads inside the cave. He has a knife at the ready in case a wild animal attacks him. While he doubts it'll do much, he at least will go down fighting. The cave is dark, but the light from outside goes deep into the darkness giving him enough visible range. He then grabbed a flashlight he brought with him and turns it on as he walked deeper into the cave. It was spacious and he didn't run into any cramped spaces. Though, as he walked in deeper, he saw a dead end. He shrugs his shoulders as he expected as much. So, he turns around but suddenly a bright light emits behind him as he was leaving. Filled with curiosity he turned back around and saw a strange glowing orb.

He looked at it with wonder before he turns off his flashlight as the orb is brighter than his flashlight. He shields his eyes as he gets closer to the orb. He stops as the orb began growing in size before a very bright flash of light erupted from the orb. Alex shields his eyes and himself from the light while closing his eyes. After a moment or two, the light died. Alex opened his eyes, and they widened as he saw an endless void of stars and large orbs before him. The orbs have galaxies in them. He looked around in awe at what he was seeing. But where was he? Alex then noticed he was still standing on a surface despite there being nothing beneath him. He didn't know where he was or what all of this was.

"Welcome." An ethereal voice said.

Alex slowly turns to the voice and saw a figure blanketed in light with orange eyes. The light subsides and reveals a figure with a dark cloak that looks well kept. The only signs of a face were the two glowing orange eyes. An orange energy radiated off their body. Alex had no idea who this was and decided to ask.

"W-Who are you? Where am I?" Alex asked.

"You, Alex Hayden, are in the Outer Realm and I am the Advisor." The figure, now named Advisor, said.

"Outer Realm?" Alex asked, the name sounding foreign to him.

"The Outer Realm is a space between worlds, a space where everything is connected." Advisor said.

"Why am I here?" Alex asked.

"You have been chosen for an important mission." Advisor said.

This only served to make Alex more confused as he didn't understand what was going on.

"Mission?" Alex asked.

"There is a world, parallel to your own that is destined to meet a dark fate." Advisor begins explaining. "A fate that was not inscribed in its flow of time, a discrepancy that must be corrected."

"Why can't you?" Alex asked.

"Because if I was to devote my time to correcting this mistake personally, then I risk exposing myself to forces who cannot learn of my existence." Advisor said. "That is why I brought you here. That is why I've brought many to other worlds not their own."

"Hold on, you summoned me to this... place, to help you correct a mistake?" Alex asked. "Who made the mistake?"

"I do not know what caused this mistake to happen which is why I decided to summon a champion to act on my behalf." Advisor explains. "All I require of you is to venture into this parallel world and prevent this dark fate. But I must warn you, it will not be an easy task."

"How hard are we talking?" Alex asked.

"It will take you many years to complete this task." Advisor said. "All you need to do is prevent catastrophic events from unfolding. Be a Hero."

Be a Hero? That's it? It sounds easy but given the fact that the Advisor mentioned that it will take years makes Alex think it isn't going to be easy. But the question remains, will Alex do it? He's just a regular Human; well, he is a former soldier but still. There isn't a lot a single person can do.

"Okay, say I agree. How will I be a hero? One person cannot do a lot on his own." Alex said.

"There is no cause for concern." Advisor reassures. "I am capable of granting you the necessary power required to carry out this mission."

Okay that brings some comfort to Alex. But should he? He doesn't just want to abandon his world for another. The Advisor seems to detect Alex's debate and speaks.

"I understand your hesitation." Advisor said. "But there is no one else more fit for this mission than you."

"How come?" Alex asked.

"You have a unique skill. You can learn and adapt quicker than most. You pick up concepts faster than most. While it may not be every time, it still makes you unique." Advisor said. "Merge that with your skills you learned from the Army, your motivations and you sense of justice. You will fit in much better with this parallel world."

This makes Alex believe he was the only shot that the Advisor has to save this world. He'd be a fool to not accept it. He just couldn't stomach the idea of letting potentially billions to perish. He's guessing that's what this "dark fate" is referring to.

"Alright." Alex sighed. "I'll do it."

The Advisor seems to smile.

"Excellent." Advisor said. "Now, which power will you bring to wield for your quest."

"Which power?" Alex asked, confused once more.

"I am allowing you to select the power you believe will better aid you." Advisor said.

Well, this was interesting. He then thought about what he could possibly bring with him to this parallel world and the gamer side of him immediately thought about the Guardians from Destiny 2. if he could wield their power, he could do a lot of damage and do a lot of good. He then decided to use that power. He looks at the Advisor.

"I wish to wield the might of the Guardians from Destiny 2." Alex said.

"Hm, very well." Advisor. "Do not worry I'm aware of what Destiny 2 is. Being who I am I learn many things."

The Advisor then gently aims his hand forward and at Alex.

"Take this power and complete your mission." Advisor said.

A glowing energy swirled out of the Advisor's hand, and it wraps around Alex. All Alex saw was this swirling energy around him before his vision went black.
