McAllen's throat worked as he swallowed. He forced his voice into a firm tone. "I don't know what yer talkin' about. I may have been there on the last day, but I just walked out after checking on a few things. That's it."
"But no one signed out," Samsa countered, his voice dropping to a near whisper that demanded absolute attention. He rested his elbows on the ornate table and interlocked his fingers, resting his chin on them. His gaze never wavered. "Including you. This was something that was never joked about, telling from how highly operative the security system of the O.R.N.S.L was..." He leaned forward. "All because the running of Project Parallel was plainly illegal. A banned project that's showing signs of life again—your faulty memory isn't much of an excuse."
"Hah?" McAllen frowned, trying to puff himself up with feigned offense. "You say I'm lyin'?" His voice was a little too loud, a little too sharp.
"I'm asking what really happened on that day," Agent Samsa replied.
