Then a small, cracked voice, "Can you… come over, Val…?"
My heart dropped.
"I'm on my way."
I grabbed the first taxi I saw and sped there as fast as possible.
The elevator ride felt like I was ascending into an emotional interrogation room.
I knocked on her door, and when it opened, I almost froze.
Juno stood there in an oversized hoodie, messy hair, swollen red eyes like she'd cried all day.
"What the hell happened to you…?" I whispered, afraid to touch her.
She stepped back to let me in.
Lavender diffuser and wet tissue scent filled the room.
Before she could answer,
DING.
The elevator chimed again.
Max entered with two bags full of snacks.
The second she saw Juno, "JESUS CHRIST JUNO WHAT HAPPENED?!"
Her voice was a mix of shock and fury.
Juno sank onto the couch, exhausted.
We joined her, Max dropping the snacks and hugging a pillow like he was ready for a drama marathon.
Juno took a shaky breath, then spoke.
