Chapter 38 - Chapter 18: The archive warden

The Archive Warden stood tall, his armor shimmering with a translucent sheen that pulsed like living glass. His eyes, devoid of emotion, scanned the group with calculated precision.

"You've tampered with forces beyond your comprehension," he intoned. "The integrity of the system is at stake."

Kazen stepped forward, his voice steady. "We didn't choose this path. The system pulled us in."

The Warden's gaze fixed on Kazen. "Your existence is an anomaly. A rollback unit that defied its purpose."

Patchling hovered protectively near Kazen. "He's more than that. He's evolved."

The Warden raised his hand, and a holographic interface materialized, displaying cascading lines of code.

"Evolution without control leads to chaos," he said. "I am here to restore balance."

Rael unsheathed his blade, its edge gleaming. "Balance? By erasing us?"

The Warden nodded solemnly. "If necessary."

Oroth stepped between them. "There must be another way."

The Warden's expression remained unchanged. "The system's survival is paramount."

Suddenly, the ground trembled, and the sky above fractured, revealing glimpses of alternate realities—worlds where Kazen had made different choices, some thriving, others in ruin.

Kazen looked up, determination in his eyes. "I won't let this cycle continue."

The Warden's voice softened. "Then prove your worth."

With a swift motion, he summoned a portal. "Face the trials within. Succeed, and you may redefine your purpose. Fail, and the system will reset."

Kazen nodded, stepping toward the portal. "Let's end this."
