"Wait for me." After hearing Coulson ask about the weapons, Fitz gave a mysterious smile, then went downstairs alone and carried two rectangular boxes back up.
"Ugh, I'm exhausted. Can someone give me a hand?" Fitz said, a little out of breath after setting the boxes down—it seemed they were rather heavy. After all, as a non-combat researcher, his physical fitness was just slightly worse than that of an ordinary person.
"Oh! What's in here? Weapons?" Seeing Fitz panting, Ward stepped forward and picked up the two boxes. The moment he lifted them, he felt the weight in his hands.
By his estimation, the two boxes together weighed at least forty kilograms. If they really were weapons, that would be far too heavy. After all, they were about to operate in a forest, and carrying such heavy gear would seriously slow their progress.
"Right." Fitz mustered his strength, placed one of the boxes on the table, and opened it.
Once the box was open, Ward immediately understood why it was so heavy—inside were several weapons resembling submachine guns. From the size of the barrels alone, it was clear these weapons packed a serious punch.
"Limited as my talents are, I only modified the weapons you used before," Fitz said, picking up one of the guns and showing it to Coulson and the others. "Basically, I changed the magazines and the caliber. But with a larger caliber, the magazine capacity is smaller—keep that in mind when you use them."
After Fitz finished, Ward took the gun from him and tested the feel. "About two pounds heavier than before, but still manageable."
"I think you'd better come take a look at this!" Just as they were inspecting the weapons, May's voice came from the cockpit where she was piloting the plane. Coulson and Ward immediately put the weapons down and headed for the cockpit.
"What is it, May? Oh my god!" Coulson asked as soon as he stepped into the cockpit. But before May could answer, he saw for himself.
Looking up through the cockpit glass, he saw, even from this distance, a fifty-meter-tall Kong.
Earlier, as she was preparing to land, May had been searching for a relatively open spot. Even though their Airbus had a vertical lift system and didn't require a runway like a conventional airliner, its size still required a reasonably open landing area.
And was there anywhere on Skull Island more open than the space carved out during Clark and Kong's recent battle? No—so May had gone to take a look. But when she got closer, she realized it might not be a good landing site after all.
Because there, on the edge of the clearing, sat a gorilla. If it were an ordinary gorilla, that would be one thing—but what if this gorilla was over a hundred meters tall?
The moment she spotted Kong, May contacted Coulson and the others. She figured they needed to see this new creature for themselves. It resembled the Kong Nick Fury had told them about, but the difference in size was staggering.
Following Coulson, Ward, Fitz, and Simmons entered the cockpit. Even from far away, Kong didn't look small.
"How can it be this big?!" Fitz exclaimed—he too had seen the data Fury provided, and the creature's size was beyond anything he expected.
"It must have grown over the decades," Simmons, standing beside him, offered as a guess.
"May, can you find another suitable landing site?" Coulson asked after a moment's hesitation, still staring at Kong.
"Yes, but facing something like that, I think landing wouldn't be too safe." If the hundred-meter-long Kong they'd heard of before was something the team couldn't beat but could at least escape from, then this colossal Kong was far beyond their ability to handle.
"No matter what, we still need to survey this island and gather some intel. May, just keep the plane in a holding pattern overhead. It's too dangerous to stay on the ground. Ward and I will go down and collect information."
Since they'd accepted the mission, Coulson wasn't going to give up easily. Of course, if it proved truly impossible, he'd choose safety over completion.
"How will you contact me? You know most of the wireless equipment on this island is busted," May pointed out. She knew it sometimes worked, but she wasn't going to stake their lives on that chance.
"Once we're done, Ward and I will either return to the landing site or find a good spot to set off a smoke signal. You can just come pick us up."
"Alright. There's a clearing over there—we'll land there," May replied, steering the Airbus toward a better landing spot.
"Let's go, Ward. We'd better get ready." Coulson clapped Ward on the shoulder.
"Roger that, sir. This is the craziest mission I've ever been on." Ward shrugged, went back into the meeting room, grabbed one of Fitz's modified weapons, and said, "This is our second time fighting monsters. Too bad there's no Superman this time."
Weapons in hand, Coulson and Ward headed for the plane's door. Coulson turned to the concerned Fitz and Simmons and said,
"Don't worry. We're just going out for a quick look and to collect some samples. We shouldn't run into those monsters."
Moments later, with a slight vibration, the Airbus touched down.
"Phew." As the cabin door slowly opened, Coulson took a deep breath. No matter how calm he tried to sound, on an island where death could strike at any time, it was hard not to feel tense.
But when the door opened, he froze—because standing there at the entrance, smiling warmly, were Clark and Diana.
