Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 Myth

Perhaps to minimize interference from the surrounding environment, the location of Mjolnir was not sealed off like other areas—it was out in the open.

"I'll give it a try."

Seeing Mjolnir, Clark walked over and grabbed its handle.

But as Clark began to exert force, the hammer felt exactly like it did when he was just an ordinary person—heavy and immovable.

"Sir, the electromagnetic waves emitted by that thing are intensifying rapidly. My God, the system can't even record them."

As Clark applied force to the hammer, Coulson's earpiece received a report from the detection team. But moments later, the audio was overwhelmed by interference from the electromagnetic waves and became inaudible.

"The EM waves are increasing... This thing definitely has something unusual going on. Is it resisting Clark's power? But why didn't anything like this happen when we used a crane to lift it before?"

Coulson had no answers. There was simply too little information.

As Clark used more strength, his feet began to sink into the ground—the earth could no longer bear the pressure of his power.

"Phew!"

Clark finally let go of Mjolnir. He realized that right now, he wasn't capable of lifting the hammer. Whether it was the weight of the hammer itself or Odin's enchantment upon it, Clark couldn't overcome them yet. Still, it was worth a try—failure didn't matter.

"Sir, electromagnetic levels are back to normal."

As Clark released the hammer and the interference faded, Coulson's earpiece resumed functioning.

"What happened? Did you learn anything? But you couldn't lift it at all!"

Seeing Clark let go, Coulson, who had been standing off to the side to avoid any potential danger, stepped forward.

"I was wondering—have you heard of Mjolnir, the Hammer of Thor?"

Rather than answering directly, Clark clapped the dust off his hands and pulled his legs out of the ground, then turned to Coulson and asked.

"Mjolnir?"

The name sounded familiar to Coulson, but he couldn't recall where he had heard it. Still, he trusted Clark wouldn't bring it up without reason, so it had to be relevant.

With that in mind, Coulson started to piece it together.

"A hammer? A hammer? A hammer!"

Then a lightbulb went off in Coulson's head—he finally remembered.

"You mean Thor's hammer from Norse mythology? What does that have to do with this?"

Though he had a hunch, Coulson still didn't understand why Clark would bring up Mjolnir. As far as he was concerned, the idea had already been ruled out long ago—after all, everyone knew mythology was just ancient storytelling.

"They say the head of Mjolnir was forged from Uru metal in the realm of the gods, and the handle was made from wood taken from Yggdrasil, the World Tree. That's how it's described. Don't you think it looks a lot like this hammer?"

To be honest, Clark only asked the question to show off a bit. But after saying it, he regretted it—he didn't actually know how to convincingly link this hammer to the mythical Mjolnir. After all, aside from both being hammers, they didn't have much in common. But he'd already said it, so he had to commit.

"You know something, don't you?"

From Clark's tone, Coulson immediately realized he was hiding something.

Clark now had two options: tell him the truth or keep it to himself. After some thought, he decided to stay quiet. If he spoke up, Thor's identity would be exposed.

And once people knew that Thor, the Prince of Asgard, was on Earth without his powers, who knew what would happen? Humanity had a terrifying talent for self-destruction. Someone might get the idea to experiment on Thor. Clark couldn't protect him 24/7.

At best, they'd study him. At worst, they might dissect him. And if that happened, when Odin woke up, Earth would likely be doomed. Besides, Clark was still planning to go to Asgard with Thor.

So Clark stayed silent and decided to let them speculate.

From Coulson's perspective, Clark just went quiet after asking the question.

"In some of my memories, I've seen references to Mjolnir and the hammer of Thor, and this hammer matches those descriptions in every way.

The head was said to be forged from the heart of a dying star, infused with divine Uru metal. The handle was crafted from a branch of the World Tree.

I assume you know what happens when a star begins to collapse. At the very least, it becomes a white dwarf. A weapon forged from the core of a white dwarf would be unimaginably heavy.

That's why nothing can lift the hammer or even leave a mark on it—nothing on Earth is as hard as this."

As he spoke, Clark patted the hammer next to him. Mjolnir didn't budge, silently proving its uniqueness.

"But isn't it just a myth?"

Coulson was still skeptical. As a seasoned agent, he was a firm atheist. Years of experience had taught him there were no such things as gods. People who claimed to have witnessed miracles were either mistaken or lying.

"Well, what do you think would happen if I went back 1,000 years? How would the local tribes react to me?"

Clark responded with a smile and a question of his own.

"God."

Hearing Clark's question, Coulson immediately understood what he meant.

"You're saying the beings in Norse mythology were actually aliens who visited Earth?"

"More accurately, they were powerful extraterrestrials. But calling them gods isn't wrong—they called themselves the Asgardians. Actually, most of the stories in Norse mythology are true. But over time, as the Asgardians stopped coming, their stories became myth. As far as I know, Odin—the one from Norse mythology—is still alive."

Clark thought he was done, so he added a bit more.

Coulson, however, was unsure what to believe.

"If what you're saying is true, then why is the hammer here?"

Still, he figured this was above his pay grade—better to let the higher-ups deal with it. For now, he needed to handle the situation on the ground.

"I don't know. Maybe go ask Odin?"

Clark shrugged, pretending not to know, though he actually did.

"Hah! Even if I did know where Odin was, I couldn't reach him. I don't have a spaceship. Anyway, what do you think is the best way to deal with this thing?"

Though Coulson was skeptical, if Clark was telling the truth, they needed to handle this hammer very carefully.

"Just leave it here. No one can move it anyway. If this really is Mjolnir, someone will come for it eventually. By the way, when you return the equipment, I'll ride with you."
