Chapter 193: Applying Reverse Gravity
"I won!"
In the dark cave, Bronzor's eye snapped open, and an uncontrolled wave of psychic energy burst forth. Victory had been its last conscious thought, the obsession that had fueled its mid-battle breakthrough.
"Bronzor, you're finally awake," Basalt said, his voice filled with relief.
Bronzor's blurry vision slowly cleared. "The battle with Metang... I won, right?"
"You won, you won," Basalt said with a weary smile and a shake of his head.
"Good," Bronzor sighed in relief. It hadn't brought shame to its clan.
"You were out for a whole day and night. You had me worried sick," Basalt said, gently patting its head. "If the Great Elder hadn't told me it was just the result of a sudden expansion of your psychic abilities, I was about to take you to a Pokémon Center."
"How are you feeling now?"
"I feel... great!" Bronzor said, its excitement palpable as it felt the changes within itself. "My psychic power is incredibly active!"
"That's good to hear," Basalt nodded, a grin spreading across his face. "In the final moments of that battle, you figured out how to use Reverse Gravity, didn't you? Show me!"
Reverse Gravity. It was an incredible achievement. As far as Basalt knew, the only trainer in the nation who had truly mastered it was a certain regional Gym Leader.
"I... think so?" Bronzor wasn't entirely sure. At the time, its only thought had been to get the Metang away from it. And then, it had been sent flying.
"Well, let's try it out," Basalt said, rubbing his hands together. He picked up a head-sized black rock and placed it in front of Bronzor. "Try to make this rock float."
"Okay, I'll try."
VWOOM!
A psychic field emanated from Bronzor, and the black rock began to tremble, but it didn't lift off the ground. But as Bronzor poured more psychic energy into the field, it began to stabilize, and the intensity increased. Finally, the black rock began to float, as if it were in space, free from the pull of gravity.
"It worked!" Basalt was overjoyed. This was it.
But the moment he spoke, the reverse gravity field vanished, and Bronzor let out a tired hum, its psychic energy clearly depleted.
"No good," it said, panting. "Using Reverse Gravity consumes a massive amount of my psychic power. The cost-to-benefit ratio is terrible. That was just a 1x reverse field, enough to counteract the planet's gravity, and it nearly drained me completely. And the range was so small. Pushing a Pokémon away with it would be incredibly difficult."
Basalt's mind raced. A 1x reverse field was much weaker than he had expected. But in the battle yesterday, it had sent the Metang flying.
"I've got it!" he exclaimed, punching his fist into his palm. "You don't use Reverse Gravity on its own. You have to integrate it with a normal gravity field and then switch between them instantly."
"When a Pokémon is under a normal gravity field, it's constantly straining against the increased pull. If you suddenly reverse the field at that moment, you don't need a high multiplier. The Pokémon's own force of resistance will send it flying!"
"That makes sense!" Bronzor exclaimed, impressed. No wonder I chose him as my trainer. He's a smart one.
"But to master it and use it effectively in battle, you'll need a lot of practice," Basalt said, his tone serious.
Bronzor's normal gravity field was quite large; a 4.0x field could cover a decent-sized area. But its Reverse Gravity could only cover a few square meters, and it was slow to activate. It wouldn't be effective against an agile opponent. Yesterday, it had only worked because Bronzor had been in a 'special state' and the Metang had been trapped by Grass Knot.
"Wait a second," Bronzor's voice came through. "I think I've figured out another way to use Reverse Gravity."
"What is it?"
"Flight."
It created another reverse gravity field, but this time, it was only a 0.3x multiplier, not even enough to counteract normal gravity. And this time, it applied the field to itself. Instantly, it felt its own weight decrease, and it became as light as a feather.
WHOOSH!
It zipped through the air, its speed noticeably faster.
"Using Reverse Gravity to reduce your own weight and increase your flight speed?" Basalt's eyes widened. "You're a genius."
"Hehe. I discovered it by accident yesterday," it explained. "To increase the power of my Bulldoze, I applied the gravity field to myself to increase my falling speed."
"In that case, once you evolve, I can just ride you, right? I won't even need to catch a flying mount," Basalt mused, imagining himself soaring through the sky on the back of a Bronzong. Riding a giant, flying bell? He'd be the only one in the world.
"On second thought, that would look ridiculous," he said, shaking his head.
After testing its physical condition and confirming it was okay, they went to see the Great Elder again.
"It's good that you're awake," the elder said, a smile in its voice. "In that case, the Evolution Festival can proceed as planned tomorrow." It was overjoyed. Bronzor had not only defeated Zane's Metang, but had also had a psychic breakthrough. If it had remained unconscious, the elder would have postponed the festival. An Evolution Festival without its star pupil was no festival at all.
"Rest well today," the elder instructed. "At sunrise tomorrow, you will enter the clan's sacred cave to prepare."
As they left the Great Elder's cave, they ran into a beaming Summer. "Basalt, I did it! I caught a Bronzor!" she exclaimed.
"Congratulations," Basalt said with a smile. It seemed there would be three trainers participating in the festival tomorrow: himself, Summer, and the honest-looking boy, Barry, who, as Basalt had learned, was the runner-up in the Savanna Province tournament.
Summer had spent a great deal of effort and promised many favors to gain the recognition of one of the Bronzor, but she was ecstatic. After tomorrow, she would have a powerful, battle-ready Bronzong.
"Let's get some rest," Basalt said, bidding her goodnight. "We have a big day tomorrow."
The next morning, before the sun had fully risen, the summit of Mount Veridian was already bustling with activity. The Great Elder, who rarely left its cave, was floating in the air.
"Today is the day of your evolution," its voice boomed. "But before that, you must absorb the sacred ore to strengthen your defenses, to forge the ultimate 'shield of the body'. Now, follow me to the Sacred Ore Cavern."
