Chapter 170: A Master's Guidance and a Pleasant Surprise
"This Venusaur is telling Lileep that its method of absorbing energy is too crude," the Bronzor-translator's telepathic voice explained to Basalt. "It's like a competitive eater, just gobbling down everything without caring about the quality of the food."
"Saur~"
The moment Bronzor finished translating, the Mega Venusaur turned its gaze towards it, a flicker of surprise on its face.
"Whoa, it can even sense telepathy?" Basalt thought, stunned.
The Mega Venusaur, however, only seemed mildly surprised. It turned its attention back to Lileep. "The energy that each of us can store is finite. You must learn to master the energy within your body, keeping the high-quality energy to nourish yourself and expelling the impurities, just as I demonstrated."
"So they even arranged a personal tutor for Lileep?" Basalt thought, scratching his cheek, a little embarrassed. It was clear that this Mega Venusaur had been sent by the Weather Bureau and the Life Energy Bureau to guide Lileep's training.
As for Basalt, the trainer... the less said, the better. While the Mega Venusaur was teaching, all he could do was stand on the sidelines and watch. Interfere? Complain? Not a chance. If he dared to show the slightest dissatisfaction, the Venusaur would probably teach him a lesson in a matter of seconds.
"Liii~"
Under the Venusaur's guidance, Lileep began to practice. But when it tried to expel energy, the process was incredibly inefficient. It was like a glutton; eating was easy, but spitting it back out was hard.
"Do not rush. Take it slow," the Venusaur communicated, its tone reassuring. It then plunged its own vines deep into the earth. In an instant, the grass and flowers at Basalt's feet grew even more lush and vibrant. The air became thick with the scent of life and Grass-type energy.
"Grassy Terrain," Basalt recognized the move. The Venusaur was clearly helping Lileep by making it easier to learn. In a Grassy Terrain, Grass-type energy was more active, and the power of Grass-type moves was increased.
"Excadrill, Bronzor," Basalt whispered. "We can't disturb the master, but there's no reason we can't take advantage of this opportunity to train. Get to it!"
The energy in the Cinnabar Sanctuary was already incredibly rich. Now, with the Mega Venusaur's Grassy Terrain, the environment had been elevated to a whole new level, far surpassing even Professor Nina's laboratory. If Basalt didn't seize this chance to freeload, he wouldn't be Basalt.
"Excaaa!"
"Brooonz!"
Excadrill and Bronzor exchanged a look, then found a quiet corner and entered a state of deep concentration.
"Saur~" The Mega Venusaur glanced at them but paid them no mind. With its immense power, the energy they were absorbing was just a drop in the bucket.
"Liii~ Liii~"
Boosted by the Grassy Terrain, Lileep's practice went much more smoothly. After several attempts, it was finally able to expel a small amount of energy, causing the grass at its base to grow a little stronger.
"Saur~" The Mega Venusaur extended a vine and gently stroked Lileep's tentacles, like a teacher praising a student. From its perspective, Lileep was an exceptionally talented pupil.
With all three Pokémon now training, Basalt found himself with nothing to do. He looked at the Mega Venusaur's massive body and thought, "This Venusaur must have a trainer, right? But how is it able to maintain its Mega Evolved state for so long? This is insane."
As far as Basalt knew, Mega Evolution was a temporary state. But this Venusaur had been in its Mega form for at least half an hour, with no signs of reverting. He guessed it must have an unparalleled understanding and control over Life Energy.
"In that case, this Mega Venusaur must have been sent by the Life Energy Bureau," he concluded.
As for its power level, he couldn't even begin to guess. Gym Leader? Master? Elite Four? All he knew was that it was far beyond the professional level. The minimum requirement for Mega Evolution was the Gym Leader tier, and even then, most couldn't control the power.
As Basalt was lost in thought, time flew by, and it was soon noon. The three Pokémon continued to train, and he was happy to let them. When he got hungry, he just pulled some food out of his spatial bag and had a snack.
But Lileep was still young. After three hours of continuous training, its concentration began to wane, and it started to whine, wanting a break.
"Liii~ Liii~"
"Saur~" The Mega Venusaur, with its deep understanding of Life Energy, could sense the young Pokémon's fatigue and didn't stop it. Instead, it gathered a ball of light and sent it into the sky, where it seemed to merge with the sun, making the already bright sunlight even more intense.
"Sunny Day?" Basalt glanced up.
But Lileep paid no attention to the sun. It toddled over to Excadrill and nudged it with its tentacles. After a brief "conversation," Lileep attached its tentacles to Excadrill's body and began to absorb the pure Rock-type energy from the Sandstorm Sovereign.
But this time, it was different. As it absorbed the Rock energy, it also began to "output" its own Grass-type energy into Excadrill, whose eyes went wide with surprise.
Excadrill could have beaten ten Lileeps in a fight, but when it came to the accumulation and use of Grass-type energy, it was no match for the ancient Pokémon. Its own affinity for Grass-type energy was minimal at best. So, as Lileep fed it pure Grass energy, its own reserves of that energy began to grow at an astonishing rate. And with the boost from the Miracle Seed, the energy Lileep was providing was incredibly pure.
Excadrill was in heaven.
At that moment, not just Basalt and Bronzor, but even the Mega Venusaur stared in fascination. A Pokémon's energy was usually imprinted with its own unique signature, making it dangerous to transfer to another. But if the energy was of a sufficiently high purity, that wasn't an issue.
The Mega Venusaur understood how Lileep, with its incredible natural talent and the Miracle Seed, could produce such pure energy. But the Excadrill... what was its story? It couldn't figure it out. But one thing was certain: this Excadrill was special.
The two Pokémon had entered a symbiotic training cycle. Excadrill's Rock-type energy was replenished by its internal Smooth Rock Crystal, and Lileep's Grass energy was replenished by the Grassy Terrain. They were trading energy they could easily obtain for energy they couldn't, and the efficiency was incredible. Their affinity for both Rock and Grass types was soaring.
"What the heck... is this some kind of legendary symbiotic training technique?" Basalt thought, completely baffled. The scene was bizarrely reminiscent of something out of a fantasy novel.
He then looked at himself and Bronzor and sighed. "Guess that makes us the third wheels."
The two Pokémon only trained together for a short while before separating, but the looks of intense satisfaction on their faces showed that they had benefited greatly.
Excadrill, feeling the new energy within it, let out a sudden roar. A peach-sized orb of pure green energy materialized in front of it.
WHOOSH!
The orb shot out and slammed into a nearby flower bud, which exploded in a shower of petals.
"Is that... Grass-type Hidden Power?" Basalt's eye twitched. The move it had struggled to learn for so long at Professor Nina's lab, it had mastered in just a few minutes of this... special training? "You two have got to be kidding me."
Then another thought struck him. Weren't Excadrill and Lileep in different egg groups?
"Unbelievable," he sighed, covering his face with his hand.
