Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Sophie...

After a long day, I finally made my way home. The bus ride felt different now, filled with thoughts about my first day at Sterling Enterprises. I was eager to share everything with my family.

When I walked through the door, the familiar smell of dinner greeted me. My mom was in the kitchen, stirring a pot on the stove.

"Hey, Sophie! How was your first day?" my mom asked, looking up with a smile.

"It was good mama. I met some nice people, and I learned a lot," I replied, still feeling excited.

My mom nodded, her expression turning a bit serious. "Your dad would be so proud of you, you know. He always believed in you."

I felt a lump in my throat. I missed my dad so much. "I wish he were here," I said softly.

"We all do, sweetheart," my grandma said gently. "But he's with us in spirit."

After dinner, we sat together in the living room, sharing stories and laughter. But as the night went on, I could feel the weight of missing my dad. He had always encouraged me to chase my dreams, and I wished I could tell him about my day

The next morning, I got ready for my second day at Sterling Enterprises. After a quick breakfast, I put on a nice blouse and slacks.

When I arrived at the office, the busy atmosphere welcomed me. I took a deep breath and sat at my desk, ready to start my tasks. I spent the morning organizing files and doing research, focusing on my work.

Throughout the morning, I met a few colleagues who stopped by to say hello. They were friendly and made me feel more comfortable.

Around mid-morning, I heard some people talking about a meeting happening soon. Mia told me i had to follow them to see how the meetings ran., I decided to follow a group of staff members heading to the conference room. I walked behind them, listening as they chatted about the agenda.

When we entered the room, I noticed the large conference table and the glass walls that let us see the busy office outside. I took a seat at the back, trying to stay unnoticed.

Then, the door opened, and in walked Elliot Hayes...

My heart pounded faster instantly...

I had to clutch onto my chest to control it. What was happening to me?

The CEO. He was even more handsome up close. His dark hair was neatly styled, and he wore a fitted navy suit. His hazel eyes looked calm and confident.

As he took his place at the head of the table, he greeted everyone. "Good morning, everyone. Thank you for being here. Let's get started with the project updates." His deep and smooth voice resonated through my ears. I couldn't help but stare at him without caring if anyone noticed.

He went around the table, asking each team member for their input. "Great point, Sarah. Let's build on that idea," he said to one of the staff members. He listened carefully and encouraged everyone to share their thoughts.

When it was my turn to take notes, I felt nervous. I was just an intern, and I didn't want to draw attention to myself. But when I glanced up, Elliot smiled at me. It made me feel more at ease.

"What's your name?" He asked, his gaze fixed strongly on me.

"S-Sophie." I had to shift my gaze away because I was fidgeting unnecessarily.

"Sophie, do you have any insights on the research you've been working on?" he asked. I hadn't expected to be called on.

"Yes," I said, gathering my thoughts. "I've been looking into market trends, and I think we can expand our outreach to younger people. It could boost our engagement."

Elliot nodded. "That's an interesting perspective. I'd like to hear more about our findings later." His response made me feel valued.

As the meeting continued, I took notes carefully, trying to learn as much as I could. I looked back at Elliot, impressed by how he made everyone feel important.

When the meeting ended, I felt excited. I knew I had a lot to learn, but I was ready to prove myself. As everyone began to leave the room, I caught Elliot's eye again. He gave me a nod, and I smiled back. I watched as he left the room. It seemed he was heading to his office. I felt giddy realizing I was going to see him almost everyday.

I had never felt this was for anyone in my life. But I just defined it as admiring him for his looks and nothing else.

It was just admiration, right?

I didn't think it was in any way. His face kept on flashing into my memories, his smile when he was interacting so calmly with the staffs, the aura. Everything he did during the meeting made my heart race till now. I couldn't even focus on my work. "I need a bathroom break," I said to myself.

Elliot...

I was sitting at my desk, surrounded by reports and data, trying to make sense of the numbers for our upcoming project. The office was quiet, the only sounds coming from the soft hum of computers and the occasional chatter of my colleagues. I was in my zone, focused to get things done.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the desk, breaking my concentration. I glanced at the screen and saw my mother's name. A knot formed in my stomach. She rarely called me during work hours unless it was important. I hesitated for a moment before answering.

"Hey, Mom," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Elliot, I need you to come home," she said, her tone serious. "I have something important to discuss with you."

My heart raced. "What's going on?" I asked, already feeling a sense of unease creeping in.

"It's about your father. I need you here," she replied, her voice trembling slightly.

I felt a wave of tension wash over me. "Is he okay?" I asked, my mind racing with worry.

"I can't explain everything over the phone. Just come home, please," she urged.

"Okay, I'll be there as soon as I can," I said. I quickly gathered my things, pushing aside the reports I had been working on. The office felt suddenly distant, the chatter of my colleagues fading into the background.

As I walked out of the office, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. And it wasn't because of my dad. I grabbed my suit and headed for the door, my thoughts racing. What could be so important that she needed to talk to me in person?

The drive home felt longer than usual. I focused on the road, but my mind kept drifting back to my mother's voice. I hoped everything was alright with my father. I couldn't help but worry about what news awaited me.

When I finally pulled into the driveway, I took a deep breath before stepping out of the car. I walked to the front door, my heart pounding. Whatever was going on, I was not ready to face it.

As I entered the house, I found my mother waiting for me in the living room. Her expression was serious, and I could see the worry etched on her face. "Thank you for coming," she said softly.

"What's going on, Mom?" I asked, my voice steady but filled with concern.

She took a deep breath, and I knew that whatever she was about to say would change everything.
