In Char's mind, inspiration was flowing like a spring. How could he have forgotten the properties of light he had learned about in his previous life? Interference is one of the most fundamental properties of light. Light emitted from the same source can produce interference effects when certain conditions are met. Its performance is similar to the superposition of light, resulting in interference fringes of light and dark, with a brightness much higher than that of a single beam.
Char had previously tried to perfect this spell by improving the single-cast Lumos Charm. However, even though he had tried his best to make the frequency of the spell's particles consistent, and the light's concentration and brightness had reached their limits, the words "Laser Spell" on his system panel had never fully formed. Now, it dawned on him. He had forgotten that multiple Lumos spells could interact with each other. If he hadn't seen the effect of the kids practicing their spells in a trance-like state, he didn't know when he would have ever made this connection.
But now that his mind was opened, the remaining problems were not difficult for Char, who had been studying this spell for a long time.
"In a short period of time, release two Lumos spells in succession," he thought. "The magic of the two spells interacts and interferes, creating a stronger beam of light."
Feeling excited, the tiredness in his mind was swept away in an instant. Char immediately began to experiment.
"Lumos—Acies!"
A bright, concentrated beam of light emerged from the tip of his wand. Immediately following, Char repeated the spell. Another beam of light shot from the tip of his wand. However, when these two beams of light met, they didn't become brighter as he had expected. Instead, they influenced each other and became dim.
Seeing this, far from showing any disappointment, Char's face broke into a joyful grin. This proved one thing: the phenomenon of interference actually happened with magic spells. He just hadn't had a good grasp of the interactions between the magical powers, which had resulted in the two spells canceling each other out instead of enhancing each other. This was not a big problem. He just needed to control the magic more carefully and deeply and practice a lot. For Char, that was nothing.
But the verification of this conjecture was of great significance. It gave him a new way of thinking. If the Lumos spell could produce such an interference effect, what about other spells? Char took a deep breath, a strange light flashing in his eyes. If this conjecture was also valid for other spells, the power of his magic could increase tremendously. Only then did Char feel the true benefits of his improved magic perception. Different perspectives could bring completely different understandings of magic. If he couldn't perceive magic on a microscopic level, he would never have thought of such an idea.
But a moment later, Char's excitement gradually subsided. Unlike the Lumos Charm, it would be much more difficult to verify this "interference" idea with other spells. It wouldn't happen overnight, and his magical perception might not be able to support it.
"When you're in an unfamiliar field, start with the simplest tasks," he reminded himself. "Let's first gain some experience with the Lumos Spell."
Soon, Char suppressed the racing thoughts in his mind and focused on practicing the interference of the laser spell.
"Lumos—Acies!"
Spells were chanted one after another, and bright rays of light continuously emerged from the tip of his wand—sometimes dark, sometimes bright, interweaving to create a strange scene. But in Char's eyes, beneath these light patterns, he could see the magic particles from the two laser spells constantly taking effect, each vibrating at a certain frequency. The macroscopic manifestations were derived from this microscopic effect.
Char watched this scene intently as time passed, second by second. Gradually, in the boring, reciprocating movement of these magic particles, a flash of enlightenment emerged in his heart.
"To make them have a positive interference effect," he realized, "the key is to make the magic particles of the two laser spells, one in front and one behind, resonate."
As this thought came to him, a smile appeared on his lips. The next moment, his wrist vibrated, and his wand waved.
"Lumos—Acies!"
What was different from before was that this time, a beam of light shot out from the tip of his wand that was much thicker and brighter than before. Just looking at it felt like it would burn his retinas; it was too bright to look at directly. And its lethality had made a qualitative leap.
Char maintained the laser spell and, with just a light stroke, the tabletop and the thick floor tiles separated in an instant, leaving a mirror-smooth surface. This power shocked even him. Although it was not as powerful as the Sectumsempra spell, which ignored most protective magic and left wounds that would never heal, in terms of sheer cutting effect, it wasn't far off. Who could believe that such a killing spell was born from the simple Lumos Charm?
Char's gaze fell on the system panel, and he saw a scene that shocked him even more. The once blurry words of the laser spell were now completely clear. But at this time, the words for the Lumos Charm, the Frequency Spell, and even the newly formed Laser Spell were no longer shining with a platinum light. Instead, they were completely covered by a clear diamond glow. The Lumos Charm, along with the spells derived from it, had all been upgraded to the diamond level after Char completed the interference conjecture.
Although Char already possessed the diamond-level Bat-Bogey Hex, it was only with the blessing of a cursed jewel that it was temporarily maintained at that level. In reality, his attainments in that spell were still a long way off. But now, the promotion of the Lumos, Lightning, and Laser spells was truly the result of his own efforts and inspiration. Although the diamond's light was still quite faint, in Char's eyes, it was particularly pleasing.
"When school started, I thought it would be great if I could have one platinum spell in my first year," he thought with a smile. "I didn't expect the progress to be so much faster. I've already obtained a diamond-level spell. Give me a few more years, and legendary or even mythical magic won't be far behind. Even a Lumos Spell that reaches the mythical level would be enough to produce a jaw-dropping effect, right?"
At this thought, Antonius Dolohov, the return of Voldemort, the temple on Delia Island, the hidden dangers of the Patronus Charm, and the secrets of the Age of Olympus—all the worries in Char's heart were relieved. As long as he was strong enough, none of these were problems.
Then, Char came back to his senses. What caught his eye were the stunned expressions of the other kids in the lounge. They were looking at the smooth cuts made by the laser spell on the table and the ground, the bright light from before seeming to still flash before their eyes.
"Ch-Ch-Char," a young Hufflepuff stammered, "that just now, was that also a Lumos Spell?!"
Char smiled and nodded. "Come to think of it, it can be considered a special kind of Lumos spell. A little spell I created."
This made the kids gasp in excitement. "A self-created spell?!"
If they remembered correctly, Char had already created a spell based on the Levitation Charm in Charms class. And in such a short time, he had created another one? The kids looked at each other, and Susan Bones couldn't help but complain, "Do we really go to the same school? Char, you make us all look stupid."
But there was no jealousy in the kids' eyes, only happiness for Char.
"Very good," one of them said. "With this spell, Char, you will definitely pass the Defense Against the Dark Arts exam safely."
Char corrected them. "It's not that I'll be safe. It's that we'll be safe."
Before the little Hufflepuffs could react, Char said softly, "Is anyone interested in learning this magic?"
At his words, the kids' breathing became rapid, their expressions filled with incredulity. "But... this is a spell you created yourself, Char. Every spell you create is extremely valuable. Everyone in the wizarding world knows this."
Char was certainly aware of this. Many wizards created their own unique magical knowledge but chose not to make it public, instead passing it down as family property. Sometimes, such knowledge was enough to make a pure-blood family rich for generations, like the Potter family's unique hair tonic formula, which had allowed them to accumulate great wealth.
The laser spell Char had created might not be able to make money comparable to hair tonic or some unique potion formulas, but it had its own advantages. It was a killing magic derived from the Lumos Charm, which meant that simply using it didn't require overly complex or advanced knowledge. In theory, a young wizard who had learned the basic Lumos spell could master the laser spell. Many wizarding families might be interested in exchanging this spell for hundreds of gold Galleons. The young Hufflepuffs weren't clear about its specific value, but judging from the lethality it had just displayed, they knew it was a powerful combat spell, and its value would never be low.
Faced with Char's suggestion to teach them, the kids shook their heads. Char looked at them, a sigh forming in his heart. They were not unscrupulous little snakes, only interested in profit, nor were they little eagles, thirsty for knowledge and fanatical in its pursuit. Maybe the kids weren't that smart, but they would never take advantage of their friends. This was Hufflepuff.
Then, Char spoke with mock seriousness. "I'm not teaching you for nothing. In exchange, everyone must get first place in the assessment this time. Our house has been studying under Professor Sprout for the entire first year. No one wants to have an imperfect end to their studies in the final exam, right? Besides, aren't we Hufflepuffs? Sharing with each other and helping each other is the most valuable quality of our house. If you were to obtain a unique and powerful spell, you wouldn't keep it to yourself when your friends might be in danger, would you? Even though I'm often away, I won't be expelled from the house for it, right?"
Hearing Char's words, the little Hufflepuffs were all hesitant. After a moment, they gritted their teeth and nodded, a determined look in their eyes. Just as Char had said, their house must win the House Cup this year, and they must win it in a perfect manner. They would also try their best to get first place in the exam.
Seeing the expressions of the young students, Char also nodded in satisfaction. He then began to explain the key points of casting the laser spell. Compared to the need to delve into the microscopic world of magic when creating the spell, just learning how to use it was not that difficult. In other words, it was slightly more difficult than the Lumos Charm or the Levitation Charm, but for the current young Hufflepuffs, it had not reached the point where it couldn't be controlled. What's more, the experience they had accumulated with the Lumos Charm could also be used in learning the laser spell.
Although it was impossible for them to reach Char's current level of accomplishment, after practicing for a while, some of the most solid students, like Susan and Hannah, had gradually realized the importance of it, and the light of their Lumos spells was more concentrated than before.
Char's eyes showed satisfaction. If they kept practicing like this, by the time the Defense Against the Dark Arts exam began, they would at least have an extra lethal spell, giving them some power to protect themselves.
Right at this moment, Char exhaled softly. He slowly walked to the side without disturbing the kids who were concentrating on their practice. But he felt that something was wrong. Turning around, he saw Professor Sprout standing at the door of the common room. He didn't know how long she had been standing there. She walked towards him and sat down beside him.
"Char," she said in a soft voice, "you did a great job." Tears of relief and joy flashed in her eyes. "Actually, I can feel it all the time. Char, you are mature beyond your years. This will be beneficial to your magic and research, but it also makes you lack communication with your classmates. I was a little worried that you wouldn't be able to fit in with the house, but now, the facts are clear. I was overly concerned. You're a true Hufflepuff."
Listening to his aunt's words of praise, Char couldn't help but look a little embarrassed. For a long time, he had indeed spent very little time in the Hufflepuff common room. To say that he was integrated into the house was less accurate than to say that the students had taken the initiative to tolerate his various behaviors that were incompatible with the house. A true Hufflepuff... Char truly didn't deserve such praise.
Professor Sprout took in his expression, and it seemed as if she knew what he was thinking. She showed her gentle smile. "Hufflepuff House, from the very beginning, has embraced students with a wide variety of personalities. But only those students who truly unite the entire house and make selfless contributions to it are qualified to be called true Hufflepuffs. This is not a standard I set, but rather one set by the founder of our house, Ms. Hufflepuff herself."
Then, Professor Sprout guided Char's gaze towards a corner of the common room. In a broken-down spot, a hidden door that no one had ever noticed before, like the door to the Room of Requirement, slowly emerged. Except for Char, the other children didn't seem to see it.
Char's eyes showed a look of shock. "What is this?"
Professor Sprout's mouth curled up. "If you've read Hogwarts: A History, you'll know that Slytherin left behind the Chamber of Secrets. Only students with noble blood and extraordinary abilities can enter and obtain what he left behind. Gryffindor also left his legacy; only those with true courage can draw the Sword of Gryffindor. Do you really think that the great Helga Hufflepuff left nothing behind?"
Professor Sprout gestured for Char to walk towards the door. "Go ahead, Char. Only a true Hufflepuff can receive a gift from Ms. Hufflepuff. She is waiting for you in that broken-down place."
