"You can call me Zeus. That's what I go by, except of course when I'm home but trust me its hard to separate these two lives and that's why you're safe for now at least because you've got no family."
Whatever, family or not the only astonishing thing at this time was the fact he was called Zeus, it was now that it dawned upon me that the novel he had been reading when he entered was my mystic novel about Gods, about Zeus actually.
He continued, " Now first question, has anyone ever visited you or anything strange happened since David died?"
"Well besides a letter that was on this desk yesterday morning telling me to trust noone," I paused because I wanted to see his reaction but he remained unfazed, " and someone visited me yesterday telling me not to trust anyone also and mentioned something about an organisation called The Order." When I had mentioned The Order I had noticed a slight pause during the action of tapping his fingers on the desk and truthfully it made me shiver. Like, why had he reacted?
He licked his lips and asked, "Did she say who she was? Was her name Mara? What did she look like?"
"Fine, like I said she just said the shadows are watching and hinted at me being the one who could understand everything "
He sighed. A big sigh of someone who's entrusted with a burden. He looked at me with disdain.
"You know Adrian did David ever tell you anything in words except that which you read yourself? Your answer will determine if you're I'm leaving you alive or dead."
You see at this time I had even forgotten the fact that there were two guns in front of me and yet that question was a wake-up call especially the life or death condition. It was now that I completely tried to profile this guy. He's eyes were brown with an unusual glow, messy black hair and a day's growth of beard. He was a moustache guy. I estimated him to be about 5 inches taller than me, and he was lean and he had that bad boy vibe like those CIA operatives in movies who cowboy their ways in cities dropping bodies everywhere they go.
I took my time to answer his question. I tried to think of anything out of place David had said and I was scared, if I've said when I found him I nearly wet my pants, now it was real. I could feel the fear growing exponentially inside me. I then closed my eyes and said a small prayer before answering.
"David never told me anything." I forced out the words while glancing at him to see his reaction, it was a life or death moment and it was now I greatly assured myself that if I survived I was selling the house and moving to a suburb with people.
He smiled at me and said," I find fear to awaken the desire to live and usually it works. Thanks for your truthful answer, either answer I wasn't going to kill you. I just wanted the truth. Now I'll give you a prep talk, the talk David should have given you."
I felt relieved and angry at the same time at Zeus. He was promising me death and yet now he's telling me he was fishing for the truth. It was now that I could not fully trust this guy's words.
"Trust noone Adrian and learn to lie. Everytime you're talking to someone, tell 7 parts truth and 3 parts lies and they'll never know it. That's the first I also got from David.
Now Adrian, David was a lawyer and that you know well but not all of his clients were saints and neither was he. Let's just say in his intern days he did well enough to attract the powerful, the rich.
Now that means being a lawyer he knew a lot as he was the the advisor. That was how he joined The Order. The Order didn't take him because he was good but because he had no life at home and that is until five years ago when whe adopted you.
So the day you entered David's life, The Order deemed you a threat as there was a huge possibility of you knowing a lot of David's secrets. What hit even worse was the fact you're a writer but David assured them he would keep you away from his dealings.
So with David gone, The Order has a new Advisor but firstly they sent someone here in your home and the diaries detailing about The Order found here told them all they knew, that you're into the secret.
They don't know how much you know but they won't risk it so you're doomed to die. I don't think the option for you to join them is on the table.
Now about Mara, I don't trust her but if you want to live, she's your best shot. She'll possibly visit tonight and take her offer, don't trust everything she says but …..its your choice. Who she is or whatever, she'll tell you herself.
My real message is you're in for a rollercoaster ride and how much you last depends on your decision tonight. The Order wants you dead and you've got the secrets.
You say he told you nothing but its me who knows that, The Order doesn't and Mara doesn't and faking you know something may be the difference between between your life ans death."
He got up and dropped a diary on the table. He took his guns and he slid one over to me. It had a intricate shape of a book engraved on the side.
" Take it and keep it, it was David's but he never used it, so he asked me to keep it and besides my duty was to protect him. You'll have to do on your own, my debt with him is repayed by letting you go." He paused at the door and said, "Just so you won't know from Mara, I work for The Order. Today I was repaying David's favour but I left you with your life so we're even. Next time we meet you'll be going down because we're on different sides of this game. TRUST NOONE "
With that he left. I remained in my office. Within a minute I heard a bike sound come from the barn. I was left devastated.
