Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: When it made most of its money

Mu Chenghua exhaled, long and slow. He stared at the envelope, his gaze unreadable. "Yes. There are some things best left unsaid until the right time. Let them read it when I'm no longer around to answer questions."

Wang Wenlan didn't speak, but her eyes flickered slightly. She glanced at the envelope for a moment too long, then looked away.

The lead lawyer nodded, careful not to press further. "Understood. We'll hold them in the vault alongside the primary documents. If circumstances change, you can update the contents at any time."

"Thank you," Chenghua said. His voice held a hint of fatigue now. The burden of old age wasn't in his body, he still stood straight, shoulders square, but there was heaviness behind his eyes.

The room shifted as the lawyers began packing up the documents and notes. Pens clicked back into their holders. Paper stacks were secured with clips and tucked into leather folders. The formality of the meeting gave way to quiet efficiency.
