Freya's POV
Mack stared at me with an expression I couldn't quite read. "After everything I just said, you still don't get it?"
The realization hit me like lightning. He wasn't asking me to shoulder everything alone anymore. He wanted to be part of my world, to help me navigate whatever storms came my way.
But I hesitated.
Noticing my silence, Mack's eyes dimmed. "I suppose I'm still not enough for you."
"That's not it at all." The words tumbled out in a rush, guilt twisting in my stomach.
Mack had been nothing but good to me. I owed him honesty, complete transparency. Yet my life felt like a tangled mess of complications that seemed too heavy to dump on anyone else.
"If something happens in the future, I promise I'll tell you. But some situations really aren't appropriate for you to handle directly. When I can't manage on my own, I'll ask for your help. Does that work?"
I offered this compromise, hoping it would satisfy him.
