For two straight days, that Timepiece Hector timepiece had become an unwelcome fixture on my nightstand, its presence both mesmerizing and troubling. The elegant gold face seemed to mock me each morning as sunlight caught its surface.
I had been certain Mack Ben would contact me immediately about such an expensive piece. Yet here I was, forty-eight hours later, with nothing but silence from him.
Perhaps he remained unaware the watch rested in my apartment. Or maybe luxury timepieces filled his collection so completely that losing one barely registered as an inconvenience.
Late afternoon brought me to my desk calendar, where I sketched out the coming week's appointments. My pen paused over a small notation I had made weeks earlier. Tomorrow marked Mrs. Ben's birthday. During my visits to Ben Manor for her dress fittings, she had mentioned the date in passing. I had discretely recorded it, sensing the information might prove useful someday.
