"The paperwork hasn't been finalized yet, but I stopped by the hospital earlier with the divorce documents. He must have experienced some kind of epiphany because he signed them without hesitation. We'll complete the legal process as soon as he's released."
My voice carried a lightness I hadn't felt in months, as though I was already halfway out the door of my failed marriage.
"That's wonderful news. Congratulations on almost escaping that nightmare."
"I appreciate it."
The sound of voices echoed from his end of the line, suggesting he was still occupied with work matters. I quickly interjected, "I can hear you're busy. I'm behind the wheel right now anyway, so let's talk soon."
"Drive carefully."
The call ended just as I approached the office building. After securing my parking spot, I found myself replaying our conversation with an odd sense of unease.
