Freya's POV
Mack Ben had been looking down with that slightly awkward expression men get when they're caught off guard. But when those three words left my lips, everything about him shifted. His eyes found mine and stayed there.
Then his face transformed. That beautiful, sharp-featured face broke into the kind of smile that could power half the city. He kept pressing his lips together, trying to contain it, but the grin just kept spreading wider.
Watching that brilliant happiness light up his features felt like someone had struck a match in my chest. The flame caught everything around us, burned away all the darkness from my miserable past, and suddenly my whole heart was singing.
My best friend's voice faded to background noise. I couldn't process a single word she was saying until one phrase cut through my haze: "Never mind, you're obviously not listening to anything I'm saying right now. Call me later."
By the time I snapped back to reality, she'd already hung up.
