As soon as Kairen and Safaa stepped onto the black frost,
her sketchbook ripped itself open ā and a drawing formed without her control.
It showed:
Al-Dawla, surrounded by shadows of people who should be deadā¦ but aren't.
One of themā¦ was Kairen.
But not this Kairen.
Another version.
Smiling cruelly.
Safaa trembled.
"He's gathering the Echoed Deadā¦"

Kairen stepped toward the final stone:
"The Shadow Called Noorain"
As he touched itā¦
a voice whispered from under his skin.
"Soā¦ you still wear my name."
"But I died so you could walk free. Did you ever mourn me, Brother?"
The ground opened ā not downward, but inward.
And from it emergedā¦ a boy wrapped in black feathers, no eyes, no mouth ā
only a glowing hourglass inside his chest.

Safaa gasped.
"That's not your shadowā¦
That's your echo ā the Noorain you refused to become."
The Echo moved without walking.
Its hands clawed the air like it was touching invisible clocks.
"Return what you took," it hissed in a voice stitched from broken glass.
"The Thirteenth Path was mine. You just wear its mask."
Kairen didn't flinch.
"Then come take it."

visions of things that never happened, but felt more real than life.
Kairen fell to his knees as he saw:

His real mother weeping blood
Minu standing behind him, whispering:

Safaa screamed:
"Kairen! Remember who you are! Not who you could've been!"

A shadow watched them from the trees.
Al-Dawla.
He smiled softly.
"Let the dead speak.
But I will let the livingā¦ scream."
