"What are you doing here?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"What else? I came to eat," he replied, digging into his lunch.
"But…" I glanced at Ruby and saw her staring at me too. What is this? Why is he still in school? Did the dean forget? No, that's not possible. He's not the type to forget things.
Something must be wrong, or did they expel the wrong person instead?
I need to find out the truth, I thought, dropping my cutlery and standing up. He looked up. "Where are you going?"
"I need to use the restroom," I replied.
"The restroom?" Ruby mouthed.
"The Dean's office," I mouthed back. "Stay here; I'll be quick."
"Okay," she said.
"I don't like eating alone; I thought I made that clear," he groaned.
"You won't be eating alone; my friend is here." I gestured to Ruby, who smiled at him.
He rolled his eyes. "Be quick."
