"It's you. You've been waiting here?" Beast asked, seeing Rogue. She was one of the two children Scott and Ororo had brought back. When Beast had gone to take Clark to the lab, she had been insistent on going with him.

"He's stable now," Beast said. "You can see him, but remember, do not touch him. We still don't know the full extent of your powers."

While Clark was being treated, the X-Men had run basic tests on Rogue. They discovered her ability to absorb the life force of others through physical contact—a powerful, yet dangerous, ability. If she were to touch the still-recovering Clark, his already-weakened body might not survive.

"I know," Rogue said. "I won't touch him."

"In that case, follow me," Beast said.

Rogue followed him to the underground lab, where they met Logan.

"Logan! You're okay, too," she said, relieved.

Logan's emotions were a complicated mess. He simply patted Rogue on the shoulder and said nothing more. The old man, Professor X, had just told him about some guy named Magneto who wanted to capture him for an unknown reason. This unexpected turn of events had left him feeling miserable.

"This is the right place for you, kid," Logan said. "You should live well here."

Rogue heard the hint of a goodbye in his voice. "What about you? You're a mutant, too. Can't you stay here?" she asked.

The X-Men leadership was silent. If Logan was willing, they would gladly welcome him.

But Logan shook his head. "I still have to find my past. This isn't my home." Without further explanation, the man who was used to being alone instinctively refused to join an organization.

He and his group walked into the lab for a comprehensive physical examination. If Magneto was after him, there had to be a reason, and it was likely connected to his mutant abilities.

Meanwhile, Beast led Rogue to Clark's room. She burst through the door and stared, shocked.

"Clark! You're awake?"

Clark was indeed awake. Once his fractured cervical vertebrae had reconnected, his Kryptonian self-healing ability kicked into overdrive. Thankfully, his body had absorbed plenty of solar energy before he was brought into the sunless lab.

"It's a miracle," Beast said. They had already considered it a medical miracle that they saved his life. But to wake up so quickly was even more astounding.

"I'm sorry I worried you and Logan," Clark said, smiling at Rogue. He then looked at Beast. "Thank you for saving me."

"You're not afraid?" Beast asked, curious. "To be honest, every kid here gets a little shocked when they first see me like this. I'm used to it."

Mutants had a wide range of abilities, but few could change their appearance as drastically as Beast. His transformation into a blue-furred monster was quite a change from his original form.

"My story is a long one," Clark replied, "but I've seen things that are more... unsettling than you." He had seen the loss of an entire universe and the terrifying sight of his fallen heroes. Clark, who had endured such things, was not frightened by Beast's appearance.

"By the way, can I go out now?" Clark asked.

Beast thought Clark was just a restless child and immediately tried to persuade him to stay. "Even with your strong healing ability, you aren't fully recovered yet. It's better not to move around too much."

"That's not it," Clark explained. "You know I have some special abilities. I'm very aware of what they are. What I need isn't rest—it's the sun."

"The sun?" Beast asked, confused but intrigued. He eventually agreed.

Clark, still a little unsteady, was helped out of the underground lab and toward the park. They were met by Iceman(Bobby), and Pyro, who had been trying to talk to Rogue.

"Hey, is this your friend?" Pyro said to Rogue. "Isn't he just a kid?"

Pyro was blunt, not considering what they had been through or how Rogue felt. He simply thought she shouldn't waste her time on someone so young.

"John," Bobby said, cutting him off. Bobby was more rational. He could see how much Rogue cared for Clark and, not knowing the full story, chose to say nothing more.

Rogue and Beast ignored them. They were focused on Clark, who was changing right before their eyes. The boy who had needed support to walk was now standing on his own, and that was just the beginning.

Everyone felt the sunlight gathering around Clark, drawn to him as if by an invisible force. The massive amount of solar energy poured into his body.

Beast was stunned. "What kind of ability is this? Photosynthesis? But his skin isn't green!"

He had a feeling this child, Clark, might be more powerful than even Charles or Magneto if given enough time.

At that moment, Clark's body was filled with a sense of pure comfort. His fractured vertebrae had fully mended, and the last of the destructive energy from the explosion had been purged from his system. He realized he had learned to actively absorb solar energy—a skill even the Superman from his own world had not yet mastered.

The Kryptonians process of absorbing solar energy was passive, but even that was enough to turn an ordinary person into an all-powerful being over time. Now, Clark was not only aware of his Kryptonian identity but had also gained the ability to absorb energy at will. The speed at which he would grow in power was unimaginable.

Under the shocked gazes of the crowd, Clark slowly rose from the ground. Bathed in golden sunlight, he radiated a brilliant light. The surge of energy from his transformation was so powerful it even drew the attention of the X-Men who were still in the lab. Charles and the others came rushing out to witness the shocking sight.
