In Washington D.C., a triangular, curved-wing building stood near the White House. This was the headquarters of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, the organization better known as S.H.I.E.L.D., where Richard and Coulson worked.

Of course, that was its full name before it officially separated from the Central Intelligence Agency. Although it was sometimes still called by its lengthy title, the organization itself had begun to detach from the United States government. The word "Homeland" in its name was becoming more of a formality.

This brought Richard's identity into focus. He and his wife, Mary, were originally CIA agents. Their work had always been closely tied to S.H.I.E.L.D., back when it was still a branch of the agency.

A few years ago, thanks to the director's efforts, S.H.I.E.L.D. became a fully independent entity. It was no longer an American organization but a global one, dedicated to protecting the world under the authority of the World Security Council—placing it on nearly equal footing with the United Nations, at least on the surface.

As a result, Richard and Mary's roles naturally shifted. They were no longer CIA agents but agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Their first major assignment was to go undercover within the Osborn Corporation, a rising company with immense potential.

What happened next is well known. The appearance of Clark and a desperate plea for help from his brother, Ben, led Richard to abandon his mission. He set aside his pursuit of justice and the abstract concept of world security, dedicating himself completely to helping his brother build a future for the Parker family.

By now, Coulson had arrived at the Director's office. Five years ago, the man in charge had been just a senior agent. But during a crisis involving an incident between Earth and an alien race, he had demonstrated extraordinary ability.

His handling of the situation earned him great recognition. Now, with the former director having stepped down, he had become the new leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.

"Coulson. Come in."

Given permission, Coulson entered the office and saw the man sitting behind the desk: Nick Fury.

"I heard Richard attacked you," Fury said, his single eye lifting from the documents on his desk to study Coulson, whose face was still marked with a trace of dried blood. "Why do you think he did it? Is it possible he's being controlled by someone with special abilities?"

Like Coulson, Fury hadn't made the connection between Richard's strange behavior and Clark. After all, even Richard himself only realized his nephew was Superman after witnessing the boy's powers firsthand. From Fury's perspective, Richard's sudden turn was most likely the result of external manipulation.

Coulson considered his words carefully. He wanted to explain that Richard had only knocked him out and hadn't truly harmed him, but that wouldn't rule out the possibility of mind control.

"We can't dismiss that possibility, sir," Coulson replied. "We may need to place Richard under surveillance for a while."

Fury nodded, satisfied with the answer. It confirmed that Coulson, unlike Richard, remained unchanged.

"In that case, you're in charge of monitoring Richard," Fury ordered. "I'll assign the personnel we were planning to use for infiltrating Osborn to you. Have them try to get inside Parker Biotech instead. But I have one condition: you are to have no personal contact with Richard until we know the truth."

"Understood, sir."

Coulson nodded. Against an unknown threat, it was logical to use regular agents as tools. But he, as one of Fury's most trusted senior agents, knew far too much. Until the situation was secure, it was better for him to stay out of the field. It wasn't as if S.H.I.E.L.D. was short on manpower.

Meanwhile, in a Kansas motel, Richard put down a newly purchased burner phone. He had just finished explaining everything to his brother, Ben—his situation and the truth about the organization he belonged to.

The moment he had laid a hand on Coulson, Richard knew there was no going back. From now on, he would be a person of interest, watched and hunted. Because of this, he had to sever any connection between Clark and that organization.

If they discovered Clark had suddenly appeared by his side right after he attacked Coulson, Richard had no doubt that the new Director—a man far more ruthless than his stoic expression suggested—would realize something was wrong with the boy.

He had spent years hiding Clark's extraordinary gifts, but that was only possible because Clark had remained off their radar.

He told Ben everything. His brother would come to Kansas as soon as possible, take a series of precautions to cover his tracks, and then quietly take Clark away. They needed to create a convincing narrative: Richard attacked Coulson and fled alone, while Ben, after being discharged from the hospital, came to Kansas searching for Clark and finally found him.

Even now, Clark wasn't in the motel room with him. Richard had left him hidden in a patch of tall grass near a gas station down the road, with a small locator on him. It was a harsh thing to do to his nephew, but there was no other choice. To escape the notice of S.H.I.E.L.D., it had to be done. From the moment he attacked Coulson, every person he came into contact with would be scrutinized.

"Time to go," Richard murmured to himself.

Not long after, Ben, his arm still in a sling from a slight fracture, boarded a plane to Kansas. Using the tracking app Richard had installed on his phone, he found Clark in the tall grass.

"I finally found you, kid," Ben said, tears of relief streaming down his face. God only knew the agony he had endured over the past month. The loss of his son had been a demon tormenting his every waking moment. But now, he could finally see his child again.

However, he couldn't just grab Clark and head back to New York. He had to let Clark stay hidden a little longer while he wandered the area aimlessly for a while, just as they had planned.

What Ben didn't know was that shortly after he left, Clark, lying unconscious in the bushes, opened his eyes. His mind was still locked in a struggle with the consciousness of Superman. Almost instinctively, he slammed his fists into the ground with all his might.

BANG!

A tremendous force struck the earth. The impact blew the surrounding grass away, and deep cracks splintered across the ground beneath him.

"Is this… Earth?" a voice echoed in his mind.
