In the palace of Paradise Island, Queen Mera of Atlantis and Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons stood watching the war engulf their home.

"Where is Diana?" Mera asked, though she already knew the answer. "Doesn't she need to help with the defense?"

Mera's question was a test. She wanted to see if the Amazons would choose to abandon their mission for self-preservation. With Wonder Woman's full attention on defending the island, they could protect their people, even against Superman.

The only cost would be the lives of ordinary survivors. Mera's people, the Atlanteans, were nearly extinct, their king Arthur among the first infected. It was easy to see why she had become so extreme.

Hippolyta understood Mera's subtext but remained calm. "Diana has her own battle to fight," she said, stating the decision of all Amazons.

"I see," Mera replied. "Then I won't embarrass the Atlanteans."

She stepped forward and raised her hands. Her mastery over the ocean was absolute. The sea surged, dispersing the infected Atlanteans invading Paradise Island.

The water then condensed into a massive sphere in the sky, with Aquaman Arthur trapped at its center. Mera's last bit of love for Arthur vanished.

She waved her hand, and the water ball, with Arthur inside, smashed into the ground. As she did so, she pulled a trident from the water, mirroring Arthur's, and went to face him herself.

With their queen on the battlefield, the remaining Atlanteans, now without a home, found renewed purpose. They picked up weapons from the Amazons and fought their former friends and family.

The war seemed to be turning in their favor, a combined effort of heroes, Amazons, and Atlanteans against the infected. But it all changed with one person's sacrifice.

Mera was no match for Arthur. The trident she wielded was a mere replica, no comparison to Arthur's legendary Trident of Poseidon.

Arthur swung his weapon, and dark clouds gathered overhead, lightning striking Mera. The powerful impact sent the queen flying, and she hit the ground, all strength gone.

"Sea Queen!" Jas, a fellow Atlantean, cried out. He rushed to Mera, using his own water-bending powers to create a giant tsunami, pushing Arthur back.

But Arthur was still Aquaman, even when infected. With a wave of the Trident of Poseidon, Jas's tsunami exploded, turning into a rain of virus-laced droplets that soaked everyone below.

"Get out of the rain!" Clark shouted, horrified. He instantly flew to where the most Amazons were gathered and blew a powerful gust of wind, dispersing the droplets before they could land.

He knew that the sea surrounding the island was now filled with the blood of the infected, making the rain deadly. But Clark couldn't protect the entire island. Many were lucky, but many others were not. A few drops in their eyes or mouths, and a series of screams signaled their transformation.

"Damn it!" Clark cursed, knowing Arthur would use this tactic again. He planned to charge Arthur, despite knowing he was outmatched.

Just then, a shield flew past and Clark instinctively caught it. He turned, and his heart sank with a painful sadness. On the battlefield below, an infected Amazon warrior roared at him.

"Sivana..."

Only moments ago, they had made a bet on who would last longer. Clark had won, but at a terrible price. He closed his eyes in pain. Since he had arrived in this world, he had faced countless horrors, but he had never felt so much despair.

There was no time for grief. Clark's eyes opened again, flashing with a powerful red light. His violent emotions caused him to instinctively absorb a massive amount of solar energy from his suit. His heat vision, now several times stronger, instantly pierced Sivana's heart.

"Rest in peace... Sivana..."

While Clark was momentarily stunned, Arthur's trident had pierced Jas's chest, killing him instantly. Arthur then approached the fallen Mera, raising his trident to finish her.

But Mera suddenly embraced Arthur. He instinctively knew something was wrong and stabbed her in the back with his trident. Still, she didn't let go.

"Die with me, Arthur," she whispered.

Mera knew she could never defeat Arthur in a straight fight, her water-bending no match for his trident. But she had absolute control over the water inside her own body. After a final goodbye, Mera's body began to swell.

In an instant, she exploded, every drop of her blood like a sharp-edged projectile. Arthur, at ground zero, endured the full force of this final attack. The blow was so powerful that it killed him instantly.
