Chapter 22 - Chapter-22

The first sign something was wrong was the ravens.

Not one or two. *Dozens.* Perched on every windowsill, bookshelf, and unsuspecting student's head in the east dormitory wing, silent and staring with the unified energy of creatures who had received a memo that everyone else missed.

Yuuji stood in the hallway, blinking at a raven sitting on his doorknob.

"…You're not the mail," he said.

The raven said nothing. It had opinions though. You could tell.

[System Notification: Unusual Mana Signature Detected]

➤ Source: Nearby

➤ Type: Shadowflame — Tier Unclassified

➤ Suggested Action: Locate Kael Before the School Does

➤ Urgency Level: Moderate-to-Oh-No

Yuuji stared at the notification. Then at the ravens. Then at the thin curl of black smoke drifting from under Kael's door.

"…Kael?"

Silence.

Then, very calmly, from inside: "I am fine."

The smoke thickened.

"You are not fine," Yuuji said.

"The fire is philosophical."

"KAEL."

## Inside Kael's Room: A Scene of Dignified Catastrophe

Yuuji opened the door and immediately wished he hadn't.

Kael sat cross-legged on his bed, levitating approximately four inches off the mattress, surrounded by a slow orbit of shadow and dark flame that burned without heat but *very much* with consequences. His grimoire had opened itself to a page that was actively trying to escape. Two candles had melted upward. A sock was on the ceiling.

His raven perched on the floating desk, watching with resigned familiarity.

"Okay," Yuuji said, gripping the doorframe. "Walk me through it."

"The Shadowflame awakened last night," Kael said serenely. "It is… more vocal than expected."

"Vocal."

"It has opinions."

"The *fire* has opinions."

"Mostly about my posture." Kael paused. "And you."

[System Alert: Shadowflame Resonance Detected — Active Bleed]

➤ Status: Kael is leaking raw arcane energy

➤ Nearby Effects: Ravens, Mild Existential Dread, One Floating Sock

➤ Risk Level: Manageable (For Now)

➤ Suggested Action: Find Elira. She's Better at This Than You.

➤ Addendum: She's Already On Her Way. She Heard the Ravens.

Right on cue, Elira appeared in the doorway behind Yuuji, took one look at the room, and sighed the sigh of someone who had mentally prepared for this but still found it exhausting.

"Kael," she said.

"Lady Vortemer."

"You're destabilizing the east wing's mana grid."

"I'm aware."

"The sock is on the ceiling."

"…I know."

## The Containment Problem

Getting Kael to the academy's mana stabilization chamber required three things: a containment charm, a path through the school that avoided populated areas, and Yuuji walking slightly ahead to absorb any accidental shadowflame discharge.

He had not agreed to that last part. It had simply become true.

"Why am I the buffer?" Yuuji hissed as another tendril of dark flame curled past his ear.

"You have high chaos tolerance," Elira said from behind Kael.

"That's not a stat!"

[System Notification: Chaos Tolerance — Passive Skill]

➤ Rank: Surprisingly High

➤ Description: Years of panicking have accidentally built resilience.

➤ Current Effect: You are 34% less likely to combust than the average person.

➤ Yuuji's Reaction to This Information: Considered Unhelpful

"I hate this school," Yuuji muttered.

They navigated three corridors, one staircase, and a hallway where Kael accidentally made all the torches turn black and a portrait of the second headmaster started weeping. A passing first-year saw the floating dark flame and ran in the opposite direction making no sound at all, which was somehow more unsettling than screaming.

"You're doing great," Yuuji told Kael.

"I can hear the shadows," Kael replied.

"Sure."

"They find you amusing."

"Great. I'm comedy to the void."

[System Note: The Void Rates You 7/10]

➤ Points Deducted For: Screaming Internally So Loud It's Audible Externally

➤ Points Added For: Showing Up Anyway

## Stabilization Chamber: Where Magic Goes to Calm Down

The chamber was deep in the academy's lower levels — a circular room lined with dampening runes and the collective anxiety of every professor who'd had to use it. A single stone dais sat in the center, carved with containment glyphs that pulsed with soft blue light.

Kael sat on it without being asked. He'd been here before, apparently.

The ravens did not follow them inside. They waited at the door in a neat, judgmental row.

Elira began tracing stabilization sequences in the air with the calm efficiency of someone who had studied for exactly this kind of problem. Yuuji watched, then quietly asked if there was anything he could do.

"Hold this," she said, passing him the end of a glowing mana thread without looking up.

"What does this do?"

"Keeps the east wall from becoming a door to somewhere else."

Yuuji held very still.

Kael, for his part, sat with his eyes closed as the Shadowflame slowly, reluctantly pulled back into something that resembled control. The orbit of shadows tightened. The dark fire dimmed. His breathing evened out.

The sock, presumably, fell off the ceiling back in the dorm.

After a long moment, Kael opened his eyes.

"…Better," he said quietly.

And then, softer: "Thank you."

Yuuji blinked. In twenty-one chapters of knowing Kael Zyrion, he had never once heard him say that without it being followed by something cryptic about entropy.

"Don't mention it," Yuuji said.

"I mean it," Kael said, looking at him directly. Which was rare. Kael usually looked *through* people, or at a point slightly behind them, or at things only he could see. But right now he was just… looking at Yuuji. "The Shadowflame is difficult to manage alone. Most people would have run."

"I almost did," Yuuji admitted.

"But you didn't."

A beat.

➤ Kael's Raven Now Considers You: A Person Worth Protecting

➤ Note: This is the highest honor the raven bestows.

Yuuji cleared his throat. "If the fire ever starts talking about me again, maybe lead with that."

Kael almost smiled. "It said you have good survival instincts."

"High praise from sentient dark magic."

"The highest."

## Aftermath: The Part Where Everything Is Fine (It Is Not Fine)

They emerged from the stabilization chamber an hour later, Kael walking steadily, Elira looking quietly satisfied, and Yuuji feeling like he'd accidentally had a character moment he hadn't budgeted for emotionally.

The ravens dispersed as they appeared. One lingered on Yuuji's shoulder for exactly three seconds before flying off.

He didn't say anything about it.

Elira glanced at him sideways.

"You handled that well," she said.

"I held a mana thread and didn't let go."

"That's more than most people do."

He looked at her. She was already looking ahead, expression neutral, but her voice had been — different. Quiet. Like she meant more than the words.

[System Notification: Bond Deepened — Elira Vortemer]

➤ Emotional State: Quietly Impressed, Moderately Soft, Rapidly Suppressing Both

➤ Hidden Trait Progress: Fiercely Loyal — 60% Unlocked

➤ Current Affection Level: Not Telling You

➤ Suggested Action: Don't Ruin It By Saying Something Weird

"Don't say anything weird," Yuuji told himself quietly.

"What?" Elira asked.

"I said — thanks for the mana thread tip. Really grounded me."

She stared at him for a second.

Then looked away.

"…Idiot," she said, but without the usual frost behind it.

[Bonus Objective Progress: Make Elira Smile (4/5)]

➤ Note: That Almost Counted.

Somewhere behind them, Kael intoned softly: "The shadows say you two are painful to watch."

"Agreed," said Yuuji.
