Chapter 10 - Dwarves!

Chapter: Everyone favorite fantasy creatures the dwarves!

As Oliver and Fern continued tracking the slow-moving Wildwood Ent, the path became calmer — a hush fell over the flower-laced forest, the wind growing soft and rhythmic. But then, Fern suddenly stopped.

Her boots rooted firmly to the moss, hood lowering slightly as her pupils narrowed — her druidic senses reaching out through the earth.

> 🌿 Fern's Druidic Ability: Verdant Sense Activated

➤ Nearby life signatures detected

➤ Strong elemental essence: Earth and Metal

➤ Terrain disturbance to the northeast

Oliver paused too, watching her. "What is it?"

Fern opened her eyes, tone low but steady. "There's a village. Dwarven. Hidden within the trees... just a few miles northeast. I can feel their forge-fire still warm."

Oliver perked up. "Dwarves? Finally! Maybe we can actually trade all this cabbage nonsense in for something."

Fern gave a faint nod. "They're reclusive. But cabbage, herbs, and elemental ingredients hold high value to them. Especially anything from the Stonebark expanse."

Oliver and Fern turned northeast and began the descent toward Tharndural Hollow.

As they moved downhill, the woods began to shift. The colors dimmed slightly — less floral, more mossy. The roots of the trees curled like fingers over ancient stone.

Eventually, a narrow stone path revealed itself between two large oak trunks.

There stood a tall, cracked stone arch with bronze engravings and curling vines overgrown around dwarven runes. A symbol of an anvil, mountain, and flame glimmered faintly.

Inside Tharndural Hollow, the village was carved into the hill itself — stone houses, metal chimneys, and gear-based contraptions decorating the walkways. The scent of forge-smoke and fresh bread filled the air.

Dwarves bustled around with large gloves, aprons, and coal-stained boots.

Fern stepped forward with calm assurance. A few dwarves glanced up, eyeing her green robes with respectful recognition.

One dwarf, older with a braided copper beard and mechanical monocle, approached.

"Ah... a Verdant One," he said. "And you... Traveler?" he eyed Oliver with curiosity.

Oliver nodded. "Yeah. We've got some… cabbage."

The dwarf raised a brow. "Show me."

Fern gently presented the glowing Moonblossom Cabbage from her pack.

The dwarf's eyes widened. "Well I'll be—! Come. We'll talk trades."

The second day had just become a lot more promising.

.....

The Dwarven village of Tharndural Hollow was unlike anything Oliver had seen. Nestled into the roots and stone hillsides of the Woodland Leaf Woods, the entire settlement was a fusion of natural stone and meticulous craftsmanship. The smell of rich earth, burning coal, herbs, and hot metal filled the air with a strange sense of harmony — a place where life, industry, and magic coexisted.

🏘️ Village Overview: Tharndural Hollow

Architecture: Rounded stone homes with mossy rooftops, wooden supports reinforced by glowing runes, and chimney stacks puffing out thin lines of silver smoke. Stone-paved paths wound through the village like ancient riverbeds, polished smooth from centuries of use.

Population:

Most dwarves stood 4 to 5 feet tall, stocky and powerfully built with wide shoulders and heavy boots. Their clothing varied by their profession — some earthy, others metallic, many woven with runes or badges indicating rank or guild.

🛡️ Village Guardians: Iron Golems

The Golems were towering constructs — roughly 9 to 10 feet tall, forged of deep gray iron and inscribed with dwarven runes glowing faintly in blue or gold.

Design:

Broad-shouldered, with heavy arms that ended in either fists or tool-like extensions, such as stone hammers or energy clamps.

Movement:

Slow but deliberate, their footsteps echoing like drums, their heads rotating with clicking sounds as they scanned the environment.

Behavior:

Stoic. Silent. Protective. They patrolled every major street and entrance to the village. If any outsider acted suspiciously, a golem's glowing eye would narrow and track their movement until they left the area or proved harmless.

Command System:

Each golem was attuned to the central Forge Core, a glowing orb of geothermal energy beneath the village. Only a Runesmith or Village Chief could override their protocols.

---

Oliver stood at a village crossroads, backpack heavy with loot, and eyes wide with wonder. Fern stood beside him, quiet as always, arms crossed beneath her cloak.

"Didn't expect this, did you?" she asked.

Oliver shook his head. "Nope. Thought I'd be sleeping in trees again... not in a dwarven city guarded by giant metal giants."

Fern smirked ever so slightly. "You'll get used to it."

As distant hammer strikes echoed through the air and a golem stomped past, dwarves continued their lives — yelling greetings, haggling trades, and crafting strange miracles beneath the earth.

And somewhere, deep in the stone halls of Tharndural Hollow... new quests and offers were surely waiting.
