Chapter 17 - Feeling Better

Kane was definitely right. A few minutes after the ambulance pulled out of the ranch gates, I was not hurting as badly as I was. Kane was driving since he was the EMT, while his partner was a paramedic. I had an IV in my arm for not only fluids, but for the pain medicine I was receiving. It was a high dose, too. Mostly to keep me from blacking out to pain while the paramedic asked questions about everything leading up to the accident. Kane is used to hearing me talk and drone on about Ranger and his protective nature towards me. Hell, my stallion would have killed for me if it meant keeping me alive until reinforcements arrived.

As soon as they pulled into the hospital, they had me unloaded, and the paramedic was giving a rundown of what had happened. The pain meds were still working as they put me on a hospital bed. I felt the ache from my protesting shoulder and hip as I was moved off the backboard and onto the soft bed. The nurse started rapidly firing questions at me, and I just wanted to get relief from the pain and know if I broke anything.

Luckily, Kane was able to answer most of the questions between questions due to not only the meds I was given but also how fast she was talking to me. A nurse came in saying she was taking me straight to X-ray before any of my folks could come back. I put my right hand up as a phone, directing it towards Kane to call me later. He winked at me before he was out of sight. "I've told her not to ask questions that fast." The nurse wheeling me said.

"I barely heard half of them," I said. She chuckled. "Are you dating the EMT?" She asked. "I am. He's cute and adorable." I said. "Girl, they gave you a high dose, didn't they?" She asked. "Yup. I was feeling it." I said. I don't think they gave me a dose high enough to hurt me, just enough so I'd relax from what my body was trying to do. "I know she missed a few important questions. Do you mind going over them with me?" She asked. "Sure," I replied. "When was your last menstrual cycle?" She asked. "Last week. I think it started on Monday when I was least expecting it." I said.

"When did you eat last?" She asked. "Last night, I wasn't hungry when I got up this morning, and I was heading back for lunch," I said. "Have you broken a bone before?" She asked. " I have not. I've been in the ICU before. I actually cannot remember if I had broken a bone then or not." I said. "Ok, we are going to move you to the table in this room. You can help if you can, but do not hurt yourself if you cannot." She said as the bed pushed the doors open.

"Ok, I just want to know if I broke something or tore something on my fall. My horse did not mean to hurt me. He felt guilty for hurting me." I said. Whatever the paramedic gave me for my pain, I did not shut up the entire time I was getting the X-ray. I had both the nurse and tech laughing from my stories and jokes. I did have to go back to the room I was in and was given the solution for the CT scan I needed.

The chatty nurse kept asking more and more questions that had already been answered, and I was done with her. I wanted the slower, funnier nurse back. I stopped answering her and started talking to the brother who had come with my mom. He had handed me my phone that he had snagged off Ranger's saddle bag and whispered that Kane had texted me to see how I was doing. The pain meds were starting to wear off a little while the hour passed for the contrast to seep into wherever it needed to go.

When the nice nurse came to get me for the CT, the chatty nurse tried to say she could get me there and back without any issues. I was shaking my head, saying 'help me' and pointing at her. "You have another patient waiting for you. I've got her." The nice nurse said. I waved at her as I was once again wheeled away. "Your X-rays should be back by the time we are done with your CT scan." She said as I was wheeled through a set of doors.

"I hope I didn't break anything. My left arm still feels numb, but I'm sure feeling should return to it in a few minutes since it's a tingly numb." I said. "And that is part of the reason we are doing this test and an MRI right after this." She said. "Ooh, another room!" I exclaimed. "If my boyfriend is off and is visiting, can he help y'all move me around if he wants to?" I asked. "If he wants to." She said.

"Ok," I said. She and the tech slid me onto the bed for the CT machine. I lay as still as I could and did not move a muscle or inch. Did not even talk. As soon as that test was done, I was whisked away to another machine. Once done and back in my room, my mom and I were in the same room by ourselves for the first time in years. I was enjoying a moment of quiet and still waiting for the pain relief. I knew that they would have to make sure nothing was hurt or severed before I could get any more.

My mom looked like she could blow a fuse, and I wished it were Dad in here instead. She tried to get Ranger tied away from me. The protector would not have let her anyway. He would have started circling and being an asshole, all because the cat was still watching from the treeline. My brothers know Range. My dad and my uncles know Range. Hell, all of my cousins know not to get between Ranger and me. Mom does not. She would have him sold for bucking me off. Dad wouldn't let her sell him. Hell, Colt wouldn't let her sell him. His foals are expensive due to temperament and movement alone.

The doctor walked in before Mom could say anything. "Good news. Nothing is broken, but I am afraid an overnight stay is recommended so we can keep an eye on the pinched nerve in your shoulder." He said. "I'll be right back." Mom said before walking out. "So, mostly deep bruising in my leg and arm?" I asked. "Oh yeah. We will be getting you a script for a muscle relaxer and a moderately strong pain medication that should help with the healing process." He said.

"Sling for my arm?" I asked. "Yup." "Unable to ride until my arm and leg are healed up?" "Yup." He said. "Ok, which floor and when?" I asked. "We will be transferring you to the second floor in about fifteen minutes." He said. "Ok, thank you, doc," I said. The nice nurse came in. "Here you are, hon, this should make the trip upstairs a little bit more comfy." She said, handing me a pill. I took it knowing I was going to be feeling better in a minute.

I texted Kane, letting him know which floor I was going to and asking if he was going to be off tonight.
