Rhaenys did not react to Oberyn's outburst. She remained sitting with the same calm look on her face. There was no change in her expressions.
It was not that she did not want revenge. When she had abandoned her old life and assumed a new identity as a clerk of the Iron Bank, she had given up her hopes of revenge. Not that she did not want it. She had known she was powerless and lacked the means to seek revenge.
She could have thrown her entire life into her quest for revenge, but it was almost certain she was never going to achieve it. If it had been so easy, Oberyn would have already had it by now. Years had passed since her mother had been killed and yet he could only blabber about his revenge.
But as Oberyn said, now, she had all the power at her disposal. And yet, she was sitting holed up in her manor playing queen. It was not that she had forgiven the perpetrators or had forgotten about her revenge. She would have her revenge. But at her own slow pace. And in her own style.
Oberyn realized his mistake and took deep breaths to calm his raging emotions.
"I am sorry, Your Grace," he said. "I just lost myself in my anger and my burning desire for revenge."
"I understand your feelings, Lord Oberyn," she responded.
"Do you?" he almost scoffed in retort.
"I do," she nodded. "And my desire for revenge burns stronger than you can imagine."
Oberyn narrowed his eyes. His facial expression made it clear that he did not believe her.
"Then why do you not have it?" he asked. "What is stopping you?"
Rhaenys got up from her seat. Oberyn instinctively followed suit. She was not taller than him, but for some reason, he felt dwarfed in her presence. It was as if she were overlooking him, looming over him. She was making him feel weak and powerless.
"What is stopping me?" She repeated the question slowly.
She did not speak further but walked across the open space toward the weapon rack. She pulled out a spear and tossed it toward Oberyn. Though surprised by her sudden action, Oberyn caught it cleanly.
Rhaenys pulled out another spear from the rack and gave it a couple of twirls. Oberyn was surprised to see the balance with which she was handling the spear.
If it had been a sword, he might not have been as surprised. But a spear? That was a different matter. Spears were much harder to master, and he could tell that Rhaenys was well-versed in their use.
"What is stopping me, Lord Oberyn?" she repeated the question once again.
The next moment, she brought the spear downward, smashing the butt of it against the ground. A loud clang echoed through the entire space, and Oberyn instinctively stiffened his body.
"Because my revenge is not as shallow as yours," she said.
Oberyn frowned in response. He did not understand what she meant. Rhaenys raised her spear and pointed it toward him in a challenging manner. Her invitation to a duel was obvious to Oberyn.
He did not hesitate. Gripping the spear tightly, he adjusted his stance and dashed toward her.
He closed the distance in a couple of steps and thrust his spear forward, targeting her chest. He did not know what happened next. He did not see how or when she moved. The next thing he knew, he had crossed past her, his back completely exposed. And the cold metal of her spearhead was resting against his neck. In a battle, he was dead.
"You want to kill the Mountain," she said, pulling her spear back. "You probably wish, or rather dream, of killing Tywin Lannister, but even you know that it is almost impossible."
"Can I do it?" She continued. "Of course I can. As you said, I have all the power at my disposal."
"I can ride my dragons, cross the Narrow Sea, and burn all of Casterly Rock to smithereens, turning it to ashes," she boomed, her voice cutting through the silence of the hall.
Oberyn's blood ran cold for a moment. The casual way she spoke about burning a castle that had stood for centuries sent a shiver down his spine. It was the realization that she could absolutely do what she was claiming. If she did what she was saying, he would probably be the happiest person but her mannerism was making him stiff.
"But would it accomplish my revenge?" She questioned. "It might accomplish yours, but not mine."
Rhaenys moved. Fast. Oberyn barely reacted in time, bringing his spear up to block an incoming blow aimed at his head.
She was not using the weapon like a spear now. She was gripping the shaft with both hands, cleaving it downward like a sword.
What followed was a blinding blur of strikes raining down from all directions. Oberyn was barely able to block or parry them. He was constantly pushed back, and before he could track her movements again, a massive force slammed into his stomach. He was sent stumbling backward before crashing heavily to the ground. She had kicked him, and searing pain shot through his abdomen.
"Ugh!" he grunted as he struggled to stand up.
"I do not want to merely kill them and give them an easy way out," Rhaenys said, drawing Oberyn's attention back toward her. "I want the Lannisters, the Mountain, and Amory Lorch to feel fear. The terror. The fright that I had felt."
"I want them to live… to live in anxiety, wondering when I will come for them," she declared, her eyes fixated on Oberyn.
He could see the extreme anger and icy chill within them at the same time. He could physically feel the weight of her hatred.
"I want them to scramble for their lives… looking for ways to save themselves," she continued. "And when every shred of hope has vanished from them, I will pluck away their worthless lives."
"Just imagine, Lord Oberyn," she continued, her voice turning even colder, "what Tywin Lannister might be thinking and doing at this moment. He must be worried that one day he will wake up and find a dragon flying over Casterly Rock."
"He must be thinking that it could happen tomorrow, next week, or perhaps next month," she said, her eyes narrowing on Oberyn.
And Oberyn did think about it. She was right. Tywin surely would not be feeling comfortable with the news of Rhaenys rising from the dead with five dragons at her back.
"Now, get up," she boomed. "Our duel is not over yet. I want to see how easily you could have killed me."
[Next chapter we go to Castery Rock to know what is Tywin thinking about Rhaenys Targaryen with dragons.]
