There was no denying it—Hun Da'er's subordinates were far more efficient than those from the Hall of Souls. In less than half a day, the intelligence on Yao Chen's disciple had already been placed neatly on her desk. If it had been left to the Hall of Souls, it would've taken at least a month, and even then, the results would have likely been riddled with errors.
Hun Da'er had never doubted this subordinate's intelligence capabilities. Not only could he gather information efficiently, but he also had the ability to filter out irrelevant details and compile a concise, useful report. What landed on her desk was always the most reliable and streamlined version of the truth.
She unfolded the scroll on her desk and gave it a quick read. Her brows furrowed at first, but as she went on, her expression began to shift dramatically.
"Yao Yan, disciple of Yao Chen, Pavilion Master of Starfall Pavilion. Some rumors claim he may be the illegitimate child of Yao Chen and Pill Tower's Xuan Yi. Rarely seen in public due to long-term secluded cultivation. Highly talented—achieved the Dou Huang level before turning seventeen. Said to possess innate monstrous strength and a mysterious affinity with serpent-type magical beasts. Despite being a disciple of Yao Chen, he is not skilled in alchemy, but instead specializes in poison."
"Because of his effeminate appearance and young age, disciples of Starfall Pavilion often call him 'Little Senior Sister.' He won first place in the last Four Pavilions Assembly. Known for his kind heart and helpful nature, often tending to the wounded, earning him the nickname 'Little Doctor Fairy.' Reportedly perished half a year ago while attempting to devour the Three Thousand Burning Flame. Based on investigations, he is believed to have a preference for young girls."
Hun Da'er's lip twitched as she looked at the intelligence report and asked, "...Is all this accurate?"
"There might be slight errors in the rest, but the part about his preference for little girls is absolutely true," the subordinate replied seriously.
"Then I must've made a mistake." Hun Da'er casually tossed the scroll aside. Whatever else could be said about him, she had battled Xiao Yan for centuries in her past life and never once detected anything remotely resembling that sort of taste. This so-called disciple of Yao Chen wasn't him. She'd clearly overthought things.
'How could Xiao Yan be into little girls…?'
Back then…
At that same moment, far from her prying eyes, Xiao Yan—who had found a quiet place to begin refining the soul of the Hall of Souls' deputy hall master—sneezed suddenly. He furrowed his brow in confusion.
'Weird… I'm already at the Dou Saint level. Could I seriously be catching a cold? What a joke…'
He chuckled to himself and casually tore through space, reentering the starfield where he'd previously refined multiple Heavenly Flames. With his soul now at the peak of the Heavenly Realm, any outburst of soul pressure would undoubtedly draw too much attention. Fortunately, this starfield had been modified by his own hand, capable of containing such pressure and preventing it from spreading.
"Phew…" Sitting cross-legged, Xiao Yan's mind immediately sank into his body. Inside his soul, a large number of mottled impurities had formed—residue from his earlier use of the Black Dragon Devours Soul Hand to forcibly absorb the souls of Hall of Souls members. These impurities were saturated with hatred and resentment. If not removed promptly, they could prove incredibly troublesome.
However, this sort of thing was routine for Xiao Yan. In fact, the very reason he created the Nine-Turn Soul Refinement Technique was to solve problems like this. Forming a hand seal, a formless flame of soul fire flared into being, instantly incinerating the impurities. The purified soul energy that remained closely resembled the soul essence he'd looted from the Hall of Souls earlier—pure, potent, and easily absorbed into his being.
"Phew… Dou Saint-level souls really are rare nourishment." After refining the soul energy of several Dou Saints and Half-Saints from the Hall of Souls, he clearly felt a significant leap in his soul's strength. Though he had yet to break into the Great Perfection of the Heavenly Realm, he was much closer than before.
Such improvement would normally take ordinary people centuries to achieve, but to Xiao Yan, it was merely a stepping stone. He extended his palm, summoning the captured soul of the Hall of Souls' deputy hall master. The man's venomous curses rang out, but Xiao Yan simply smiled and summoned the Soul Refining Tower once more, trapping the soul inside.
This guy's soul was also at the Heavenly Realm level. Refining him should be enough for Xiao Yan to reach Great Perfection. Realizing his fate, the deputy hall master began to struggle violently within the tower, but no matter how much he fought, he could not break free from its restraints.
Xiao Yan changed his hand seal again. Inside the Soul Refining Tower, countless formless fire dragons emerged, snarling as they coiled around the trapped soul. As the soul made contact with the flames, it immediately began to ignite. The deputy hall master's voice rang out in a pained scream.
"Damn it! What kind of flame is this?!"
Xiao Yan chuckled. Now that his cultivation had reached the Dou Saint level, the Nine-Turn Soul Refinement Technique was finally revealing its true might. Coupled with his late-stage Heavenly Realm soul power, the Hall of Souls deputy—though also of Heavenly Realm—was far inferior. And trapped in soul form, he had no way of resisting the soul fire's torment.
"Don't kill me! I know many secrets about the Hall of Souls and the Hun Clan! If you let me live, I'll tell you everything! I'll even serve you!" The man panicked, sensing that his soul would soon be utterly destroyed if left within the tower.
"No need," Xiao Yan said calmly. "Because I already understand the Hall of Souls and the Hun Clan better than you do."
What the deputy didn't know was that the Soul Refining Tower also had the ability to extract memories. Once Xiao Yan refined his soul, he would gain access to every last secret the man held. And it wasn't a lie—when it came to the Hall of Souls, even Hun Miesheng himself might not know more than Xiao Yan.
The soul fire roared ferociously, and with a final, agonized scream, the deputy hall master's soul was fully melted down. The remaining essence was drawn into the Soul Refining Tower and then slowly infused into Xiao Yan's soul. In the next moment, a surge of soul power exploded outward from Xiao Yan's body, causing the entire starfield to tremble violently.
Thankfully, he was currently inside an isolated space. If this shockwave had erupted into the outside world, it could have inflicted devastating damage. After all, a soul at the Great Perfection of the Heavenly Realm… was a terrifying force indeed.
