Cough…
The deputy hall master of the Hall of Souls lay amidst the ruins, coughing out mouthfuls of blood, which were laced with fragments of his internal organs. It was clear just how severe his injuries were from that last strike. Not only had one of his arms been shattered on the spot, but his internal damage was also critical. If not for the soul-consuming serpent earlier having absorbed a portion of the attack's strength, he might have perished on the spot.
Xiao Yan glanced at his own hand, a flicker of surprise in his eyes. When he unleashed the Nine Calamity Demon Fist, he'd merely expected to destroy the black chain python and then gradually wear down the deputy hall master in battle. He hadn't imagined that punch alone would nearly kill him. Looks like I underestimated the strength of the Limitless Demon Body.
"Curse you… I won't let you get away with this!" The deputy hall master's eyes filled with hatred. With his remaining good hand, he pulled out a silver jade slip. But before he could crush it, a black heavy ruler swept across his wrist, severing the last remaining arm.
Though Xiao Yan had already sealed the surrounding space, making any spatial jade slips ineffective, he wasn't interested in playing a game of cat and mouse. The Hun Clan would soon notice the destruction of their branches. It was better to finish things cleanly while he had the chance.
Xiao Yan swiftly appeared before the deputy hall master and pressed his palm to the man's head, forcibly drawing out his soul. With a flick of his finger, a transparent Soul Flame surged forth, forming a miniature tower that encased the soul before merging back into Xiao Yan's body.
Having absorbed the deputy hall master's soul, Xiao Yan turned to the remaining few surviving Dou Saints and Half-Saints. With a casual wave of his palm, the Black Dragon Devours Spirit Hand manifested again, swallowing their souls cleanly. Though the deputy's soul was the main course, these others were still fine delicacies. He had no intention of wasting them.
Naturally, before leaving, Xiao Yan collected the soul essence hidden in the Earth Hall. As expected, the soul light clusters stored here were at least ten times more concentrated than those in the other halls. With these, he no longer had to worry about a lack of energy when breaking through to the Empyrean Realm in the future.
Shortly after Xiao Yan obliterated the Earth Hall, the headquarters of the Hall of Souls finally noticed the disruption—numerous branches had gone dark. When they began investigating, they realized, to their shock, that only two halls remained: the Heaven Hall and the Human Hall.
Such a devastating loss could not be kept hidden. Before long, even the core of the Hun Clan was made aware of the calamity.
Within the dark and secluded Soul Realm, the overlord of Central Plains—formerly unmatched—Hun Miesheng, master of the Hall of Souls, now knelt in terror before a group of figures seated in a gloomy palace. Cold sweat ran down his back. His eyes were full of dread, for each person seated before him held strength far greater than his own…
The only exception was the silver-haired girl seated at the center. But everyone present knew that, aside from the clan leader still in seclusion and the mysterious Void Lord, she held the greatest authority in the entire Hun Clan. Even though she had yet to step into the Dou Saint level, numerous Dou Saints were willing to serve her loyally.
"Hun Miesheng, you're certainly living up to your name as the master of the Hall of Souls!" a cold voice snapped from the right side. The speaker, Hun Qianmo, held immense weight within the clan. He had participated in the siege of Xiao Xuan back then and was now a terrifying six-star Dou Saint.
"In a single day, all branches of the Hall of Souls in Central Plains have been annihilated. This report is absolutely absurd!" another gray-robed elder beside Hun Qianmo shouted in fury. "And you failed to detect any of it until it was too late. Hun Miesheng! You cannot escape responsibility for this!"
Hun Miesheng's expression twisted with bitterness. He wanted to refute them but had no excuses to offer.
In truth, he had been in seclusion for a long time, and most daily operations of the Hall of Souls were handled by the deputy hall master unless a major event occurred. So if blame were to be placed, the deputy should bear it. Unfortunately, that man now lay among the fallen. So who was there to blame?
"Enough. Punishments can wait. Right now, we must address how to recover our losses," another elder said with a calmer tone. He had some connection to Hun Miesheng, and his intervention wasn't unexpected.
"Recover the losses? That's easy…" The silver-haired girl at the center finally spoke. Her blood-red eyes swept across the gathered elders as she said calmly, "A single Dou Saint's soul is worth hundreds of years' worth of soul collection from a branch hall. If you all put in some effort and harvest enough Dou Saint souls, we can recover the losses."
At her words, many of the elders twitched involuntarily. Easy for you to say… They had lost hundreds of soul clusters. According to her logic, they would need to kill hundreds of Dou Saints to recover everything. But in the current Dou Qi Continent, were there even that many Dou Saints alive? And even if there were—were Dou Saints that easy to kill?
"Miss, please don't joke about this."
"Oh? So you do know how to joke. Then stop wasting time with meaningless talk," Hun Dai'er chuckled softly. "There's only one way to recover what was lost—find the one responsible for destroying the branch halls."
"Miss, I believe… the destruction of the halls must have been the work of many. After all, the branch halls were scattered across all corners of the Central Plains. It would be almost impossible for a single person to wipe them all out in one day," one of the elders replied after exchanging glances with the others.
Wiping out one or two halls wasn't hard. Any of them could manage it easily. But to destroy all of them in a single day—that was another story.
"Oh? So you're saying more than one person was behind this?" Hun Dai'er tilted her head. "Then tell me—which power do you suspect?"
"Miss, I suspect it was the combined effort of the other six ancient clans," said the elder who had earlier diverted the criticism away from Hun Miesheng. "Lately, each of them has clashed with us. They have the motive, and more importantly, the ability to pull this off. Honestly, aside from a coalition of those clans, no other force could possibly achieve something like this."
