Looking at my body I slightly regretted not having run away from my responsibilities and debts, maybe that could have let me live a little longer, I didn't knew why but I wasn't really that desperate for my death.
I didn't had any friend (quite cliché I know, but being an introvert doesn't help much, not that my look helped at all), nor I had any family left, I didn't even had a pet as I was allergic to all type of fur, in short, no one would have missed me, at least I didn't have to work again, my only regret was not destroying my research history, I could already taste all the traumas it was going to give to whoever ended up seeing it.
To add salt to the wound, my death pose was quite bad to look at, anyone coming from NYC would probably have thought I was some drug addict or madman sleeping on the sidewalk, sadly the reality was far from that.
Suddenly I heard a voice in my mind, it gave that robotic-like feeling, something that tried to pass for human, but was just as soulless as an AI program, it said "Please follow the light", looking up I saw a powerful light coming from the clouds, it shone tall from the sky.
I didn't know why, but I felt as if it was calling me, an incredible urge to go into it bloomed in my heart (not that in that state I had any), without realising it I entered it.
Everything became black again and this time it lasted much longer than before, after waiting for like an eternity I regained my sight, in front of me hundreds of thousands of transparent people were waiting in line.
The line consisted of a slim path of rock where even a single person had difficulty standing there, I had to be careful to where I put my feet if I didn't want to end in the endless void.
If I focused really hard to see the end of the line I could see a quite small portals that every person at turn crossed, behind me an endless number of gost waited also in line, only that they seemed to lack that focus that I had in abundance.
I had waited patiently all my life and I didn't want to do the same even in death, I tried to surpass the ones in front of me, they stood as still as rocks, as I imposed myself a little more I lost my balance and I off down the path.
It seemed to fall in the complete nothing, after the initial blackness I began to see other paths, hundreds if nothing thousands of them could be seen in every direction, they were full of ghosts each waiting in line m in order to enter in a different portal, on some of those paths I could also see other confused ghosts that like me weren't unconscious.
Just as I began to get bored I saw a light-gray portal open under me, I tried to dodge it, but I ended up falling straight into it.
My sight was taken from me again, I was beginning to get pissed, but something was different this time, I could hear some voices, they weren't speaking any European language I knew, nor anything from Asia, their language was far stranger, nothing I had ever heard in my life.
Slowly I felt that the space around me began to shift, an improvement, at least (I hope), something began to drag me outside of that space, it got suddenly stronger and in no time I saw a bright light.
My eyes adjusted themselves to the sudden change, a mature man with brown hair and light beard was holding me, his eyes were full of happiness, behind him three other young kids were watching me, two male and one female.
Looking around I seemed to be in a narrow wooden house, those people were also dressed in rags, the temperature of the room was really hot, I started to sweat, I think I miss my apartment there at least I had air conditioning.
He began talking in that strange tongue that I heard before, small tears ran down his cheeks, he slowly turned me around, a woman around his age was weakly smiling, even if I didn't want to I began to process the situation, even an idiot could deduce that she just gave birth.
And the baby she gave birth to was me...guess I reincarnated, as if that day couldn't be stranger I slowly looked down at my body, and was shocked to discover, my "Excalibur" was no gone, it disappeared.
My reincarnation was an accursed one, a scam, I was reborn as a girl, damn it, as if that day couldn't become worse.
