Ichigo studied the Substitute Shinigami Badge in his palm, its black insignia reflecting faint light. Moyu's words had stripped it bare of mystery, yet his face showed little resistance. He understood at once what the badge truly was.
"So it's mainly for surveillance?" His voice was steady, edged with thought.
Moyu gave a slight nod. "You don't need me to tell you how much destruction a Shinigami with Bankai can unleash in the human world. This is not a matter of trust alone—it is control. But since you are Renji's friend, I believe you won't dishonor yourself with foolish actions. Even so, Seireitei will watch your every step."
Ichigo was silent for a beat, then raised his eyes and nodded. "I understand." He slipped the badge into his uniform and turned toward the gate, following his companions out of Soul Society.
Moyu lingered, watching the gate close with steady eyes. Only when the light faded did his voice surface in a whisper meant for himself. "Treasure this peace. It won't last."
---
Nearly a month passed since Aizen's betrayal. On the surface, Seireitei had regained its calm. Nobles resumed their indulgent lives, as though the rebellion had been a fleeting storm, while in the Rukongai, wandering souls still struggled for survival, clinging to the distant hope of one day entering the Shin'ō Academy. Few could say whether the future or death would reach them first.
Under the combined oversight of the First and Sixth Divisions, Central 46 was rebuilt. Yet because of Moyu's subtle hand, four of the six judges now hailed from the Kuchiki family, the other two bound to the Shihōin. Of the remaining sages, many too bore ties to these houses. What emerged was not renewal but decadence—a chamber dominated by two noble clans.
Moyu's logic was simple. Since the system could not yet be dismantled, then he would control it from within. He did not directly command the Central 46, but their ears bent more easily to him than to even Yamamoto's voice. And the Head Captain himself gave no objection. On the contrary, he encouraged it. In his eyes Moyu was one of the few who could be trusted, even if his methods strayed into shadows.
---
At the Kuchiki manor, Moyu sat across from a white-haired elder, one of the newly installed judges. The old man wore a fawning smile that wrinkled his face like folded parchment. "Lord Moyu, about the Kidō barrier we discussed…"
Moyu drained his sake, savoring the taste before answering. "I'll go today. Three layers of Kidō Forbidden barriers, three high-level Kidō layers, and three inner-layer enchantments. Even if the Head Captain himself forced entry, it would take time."
The elder's smile deepened into a laugh, his lined face crumpling like a blooming chrysanthemum. "Splendid. Splendid indeed. The chamber will owe you greatly for this." He bowed out, unoffended by Moyu's curt dismissal.
He had good reason. Once a simple Kuchiki elder, now a judge, his sudden elevation left him cautious before Moyu, whose influence within the clan and Seireitei itself had eclipsed even Byakuya's. If Moyu agreed to craft barriers for the underground hall, then all the better—the fate of the last Central 46 had taught them the price of carelessness.
To the elders, Moyu's mastery stood on a plane apart. His Kidō exceeded even the finest practitioners; compared to him, the current Kidō Corps was a child's toy.
---
Within the rebuilt Central 46, light swelled as space itself bent beneath Moyu's spellwork. The Kidō Corps members stood wide-eyed, straining to follow every movement of his fingers.
"Kidō Forbidden barrier—space transfer," one of them whispered in awe.
Black reiatsu poured from Moyu's fingertips like a living tide, weaving into a vast net that enveloped the chamber. His motions were precise, elegant, like butterflies dancing in controlled flight.
Minutes later, the ritual concluded. The new barriers pulsed into place, layers interlocked like living crystal.
The Corps stared with reverence. "This is art…! The inverted mountain crystal, Splitting Void, Four Beasts Barrier—all altered, fused into perfection. Even Tessai Tsukabishi never achieved this!"
Fanaticism shone in their eyes, but by the time they realized, Moyu was already gone. He had no taste for their worship or the suffocating air of the chamber.
---
Back in the Tenth Division, Moyu's days settled into routine. Duties were handled with quiet efficiency, punctuated only by Unohana's occasional visits. Her presence always shifted the air—soft smile hiding unfathomable weight, a reminder that of all those around him, she alone could crush without effort.
Today, Moyu sat sorting through accumulated documents, prepared to return to work when hurried voices erupted outside. The doors burst open and Rangiku stormed in, breathless.
"Captain, it's urgent!" Her eyes burned with alarm. "A message from First Division—we're ordered to issue a joint alert. There's an outbreak in Naruki City… a Hollow riot!" She paused, her voice tightening. "And among them… Arrancar have appeared."
