Chapter 115 - Chapter 115: Ancient Assassin Awakens

At this particular moment, the Guardians of the Galaxy were methodically dismantling and examining the mysterious abandoned spacecraft they had discovered floating in deep space.

"Kraglin, have you managed to find anything useful in there?" Rocket called out loudly from his position outside the ancient vessel, where he had been carefully cataloguing the various disassembled robot components they had recovered. He had managed to piece together most of the mechanical parts, but one crucial piece—a section of the chest assembly—had been missing from their initial collection.

"Not much of anything worthwhile," Kraglin responded with obvious frustration as he continued removing control panels from the ship's deteriorated cockpit, trying to determine if there might be any salvageable technology or valuable information stored within the vessel's systems. He muttered under his breath, "This whole ship is literally one step away from complete structural collapse."

"I really have to wonder what kind of incredible ordeal this thing went through to end up in such terrible condition," Star-Lord observed thoughtfully as he settled into what had once been the pilot's chair in the cramped cockpit area.

Gamora was conducting her own systematic inspection, walking carefully around both the exterior and interior of the ship while examining its unique design features. It was definitely a rather unusual and distinctive vessel, unlike anything she had encountered in her extensive travels throughout the galaxy.

The ship's design was particularly striking, with one side featuring a smooth, curved hull while the other side extended outward in three distinctive claw-like projections. Two of these mechanical claws were connected to each other through reinforced support struts, while the third claw extended independently and connected to the main body of the ship through the rear curved section.

As she explored the interior spaces of the craft, Gamora found the layout to be surprisingly spacious and well-designed, somewhat reminiscent of the beloved Milano that had served as their home for so many years.

Drax and Mantis had both grown bored with the technical aspects of the salvage operation and had wandered off to explore other areas of the Benatar, while Rocket continued muttering frustrated curses at the damaged robot head as he searched through their spare parts inventory for suitable replacement components.

"I am Groot!" the tree-like being announced with obvious excitement.

Gamora turned around to see that Groot had just emerged from the depths of the ancient ship, holding what appeared to be exactly the missing component they had been searching for.

"Rocket!" Gamora shouted to the cybernetically enhanced raccoon, who had already left the main hangar area. "Groot just found the missing chest piece we needed!"

"Well, that's going to make this whole restoration project considerably easier," Rocket replied with obvious relief as he reentered the hangar bay, carrying his comprehensive toolkit and various repair supplies.

Gamora turned her attention back to Groot, who had already carefully placed the recovered chest component down alongside the other robotic parts they had assembled.

"Where exactly did you find this piece, Groot?" Gamora asked with genuine curiosity.

"I am Groot!" the sentient tree replied with a casual shrug, gesturing back toward the ancient vessel.

"You found it on the floor of the ship?" Gamora asked, seeking clarification as she glanced back toward the deteriorating craft. "Somewhere inside the ship itself?"

"I am Groot!" he confirmed enthusiastically.

"That's interesting. Was there anything else hidden in that same area?"

"I am Groot!" Groot responded with obvious excitement about his discovery.

"Wait, Groot found a hidden compartment beneath the floorboards of the ship?" Gamora translated with growing interest.

"A hidden compartment?" Rocket repeated, pausing in his work to stare at the ancient ship with renewed curiosity. "Well, that suggests this might have been some kind of transport vessel or possibly even a smuggling ship designed for covert operations."

Gamora simply shrugged at this speculation and turned her attention back to Groot as he eagerly reentered the ship to continue his exploration and see what other interesting discoveries he might uncover.

Meanwhile, near the cockpit area, Star-Lord was working alongside Kraglin to extract whatever flight data and navigation records might still be recoverable from the ship's deteriorated computer systems. "What language is all this information written in?" Star-Lord asked as he studied the strange symbols and text displayed on the damaged screens.

"I honestly have no more idea than you do, Quill," Kraglin replied with obvious frustration. "I've never encountered anything remotely like this script before. It doesn't seem to match any known language or writing system that I'm familiar with from my years of traveling throughout the galaxy."

Star-Lord considered the ship's obviously ancient origins and speculated that the text might very well have come from a completely extinct civilization or species that had disappeared from the galaxy thousands of years ago.

"In that case, let's just extract everything we can possibly recover and worry about translation and analysis later," Star-Lord decided pragmatically.

Rocket spent considerable time carefully studying the various technical schematics and diagnostic information he had managed to retrieve from the robot's damaged cranial unit. Much of the data appeared to be corrupted or incomplete, but he was able to piece together enough information to begin the restoration process. Using some of his spare wiring, replacement components, and various metal repair materials, he worked methodically to restore the mechanical being's functionality. Finally, after several hours of meticulous work, he patted the back of the robot's head with a satisfied expression.

Now that he had successfully completed the repair of the robot's head and cognitive systems, it was time to tackle the much more complex task of reassembling the rest of the mechanical body.

Working slowly and carefully, he began the process of reattaching the head to the chest assembly, then methodically connecting the arm joints and other critical components.

"Hey everyone, I think I'm finished with the restoration!" Rocket called out to his teammates with obvious pride in his technical accomplishment.

Soon, all the Guardians had gathered in the hangar bay, watching with anticipation as Rocket stood on a maintenance crate, making final adjustments and calibrations to the newly restored robot.

After a few more moments of fine-tuning, the robot's distinctive red optical sensors began flickering to life with increasing brightness and stability. A moment later, its head began moving from side to side as its systems came online and began conducting basic diagnostic routines. Finally, the mechanical being focused its glowing red eyes directly on the assembled Guardians, who stared back with a mixture of curiosity and anticipation.

Then, for the first time in four millennia, it spoke.

"Inquiry: Who are you organic beings? And more importantly, where exactly am I currently located? Are you friendly creatures who mean no harm? Or are you hostile meatbags with malicious intentions?"

Several of the Guardians blinked in surprise at the robot's distinctive speech patterns and somewhat rude terminology.

"Uh... I guess we'd classify ourselves as friendly," Star-Lord replied, though his tone suggested some uncertainty about how to respond to such an unusual greeting.

The robot then systematically examined each of the other Guardians before speaking again. "Restatement: Please identify yourselves and inform me of my current location."

"Alright, in order of introduction: I'm Gamora, this is Peter Quill, that's Rocket Raccoon, the big guy is Drax, she's Mantis, he's Kraglin, and the tree is Groot. We call ourselves the Guardians of the Galaxy," Gamora explained with patience and clarity.

"Confused Statement: Guardians of the Galaxy? What exactly does that designation mean or imply?"

"We're basically just a group of misfits and outcasts who ended up working together," Rocket chimed in with characteristic bluntness. "Though I should mention that we've managed to save the entire galaxy from complete destruction at least twice now."

"As for your current location," Gamora continued the explanation, "you're currently aboard our ship, the Benatar. We found your vessel drifting abandoned in deep space."

The robot looked around the hangar bay with obvious recognition before responding, "Observation: This appears to be my master's ship that you have salvaged."

"Your master owned that ancient wreck?" Mantis asked with obvious curiosity.

"Affirmation: Yes, large-eyed organic. Additional Inquiry: You do not appear to resemble those insufferable Jedi Knights, do you?"

All the Guardians stared at the robot in complete confusion, with Drax and Star-Lord exchanging particularly puzzled glances.

"What exactly is a Jedi supposed to be?" Star-Lord asked with genuine bewilderment.

The droid studied them in apparent disbelief. "Incredulous Statement: You do not know what a Jedi is?"

"Never heard of them," Star-Lord replied, looking at his teammates for confirmation. "Does anyone else have any idea what this guy is talking about?"

"Nope, no clue whatsoever."

"I've never encountered anything by that name."

"I am Groot!" the tree declared with a shrug.

"Translation: I have no idea what the intelligent tree just communicated," the robot observed with obvious confusion.

"Don't worry about it, you'll understand Groot's speech patterns once you get used to being around him," Rocket explained to the newly reassembled droid.

"Follow-up Inquiry: If you are unfamiliar with the Jedi, and you claim that my master's ship was abandoned, exactly how long has it been drifting in space?"

This was admittedly a somewhat awkward question, since none of them had really expected to discover any surviving crew members or passengers aboard the ancient vessel.

"Your ship has been floating around like a piece of space junk for approximately four thousand years, give or take a few centuries, tin head," Rocket said with his characteristic lack of diplomatic tact.

The robot carefully examined its surroundings and the assembled Guardians, apparently conducting some kind of internal analysis to determine whether they might be lying or deceiving him, but found no evidence of deception in their statements or behavior.

"Melancholy Statement: Then my master has undoubtedly been dead for millennia."

"Who was your master, if you don't mind us asking?" Gamora inquired with genuine sympathy.

"Declaration: The great and glorious Revan," the robot replied, and despite its mechanical voice, there was an unmistakable note of sadness and loss in its tone.

"Addendum: To make matters even worse, my second master, the exile Meetra Surik, is also undoubtedly dead after all this time."

Several of the Guardians felt genuine sympathy for the restored robot, understanding the profound loss it must be experiencing.

"So what do you want to do now?" Gamora asked gently.

"Uncertain Statement: I... honestly do not know," the robot replied with obvious hesitation and confusion.

Mantis could sense only the faintest emotional resonance from the mechanical being in front of her, but there was definitely some kind of consciousness and feeling present, even if it was quite different from organic life forms.

"What exactly was your primary function or purpose?" Kraglin asked with practical curiosity.

"Proud Declaration: I was originally programmed and designed as an advanced assassination droid," the robot announced with unmistakable pride in its voice. "You may address me as HK-47. Would you like to test my capabilities? Do you currently need anyone eliminated? It appears that all my combat functions and tactical protocols have been fully restored since my reactivation."

"You're welcome for the repair work," Rocket said loudly, drawing HK-47's attention with obvious satisfaction at his technical achievement.
