Chapter 109 - Chapter 109: Steve's Burdens

Captain America felt emotionally and physically drained, his mind racing with countless concerns and worries. Ever since he and the other Avengers had mysteriously disappeared from Earth, Tony Stark had been working tirelessly around the clock to locate them, with both Clint Barton and Dr. Hank Pym providing whatever assistance they could manage.

Steve found it deeply reassuring to know that Tony possessed such exceptional leadership and organizational capabilities. When Stark had discovered that his teammates had vanished without a trace, he had immediately thrown himself into the search effort with characteristic intensity and determination, working day and night to develop new technologies and strategies that might help bring them home.

Despite whatever personal differences or disagreements they might have had in the past, Steve found this commitment incredibly comforting. It proved that Tony was genuinely willing to sacrifice everything for his friends and fellow teammates, regardless of any previous conflicts between them.

Then there was the newest addition to their ranks—Peter Parker, the young man who operated under the codename Spider-Man. According to what the teenager had told them, Tony had apparently been observing and evaluating Peter's potential for quite some time. The kid had explained that Iron Man had been planning to bring him to the Avengers' headquarters so that he could receive proper training and mentorship directly under Steve's guidance and supervision.

But as the old saying went, no plan ever survived contact with reality. None of them could have anticipated that such extraordinary and impossible events would befall the Avengers, completely derailing all of their carefully laid plans and preparations. Captain America certainly hadn't expected it, and Tony Stark definitely hadn't seen it coming either.

The kid was undeniably determined and strong-willed, that much was absolutely certain. He was also remarkably young—probably around the same age as Ahsoka Tano—but he possessed an inspiring combination of determination and optimism that reminded Steve of his own younger days. Even after learning about the incredibly dangerous and confusing situation he had found himself in, Peter hadn't simply sat around waiting for someone else to rescue him. Instead, he had immediately taken action to help innocent people being victimized by criminals on this alien world, which seemed to be a fundamental character trait shared by everyone who had ever worn the Avengers name—an unwavering commitment to fighting for justice and protecting the innocent.

So now, in addition to the ongoing search for Vision and Wanda Maximoff, the two team members they had lost earlier in their adventures, there were two more—Peter Parker and his companions Matt Murdock and T'Challa—who were scattered somewhere across this vast galaxy, probably just as confused and isolated as Steve had been when he first arrived.

There was simply so much work to be done, so many people depending on them, and so little time to accomplish everything that needed to be accomplished.

THWACK!

Captain America winced and let out a sharp grunt of pain as the wooden training sword connected solidly with his ribs.

"Oh my goodness, Steve!" Aayla Secura immediately stopped her attack, dropped her practice weapon, and rushed over to his side with obvious concern. "I'm so sorry! Are you alright?"

"Hey there, Steve, you okay buddy?" Anakin Skywalker asked with genuine worry, setting down his own training lightsaber and moving closer to check on his friend.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Captain America said, rubbing his temple where a headache was beginning to form. He managed to give Aayla a reassuring smile despite the throbbing pain. "That was a really good strike, by the way. Nice technique."

Without hesitation, Aayla gently took hold of Steve's arm and carefully rolled up his sleeve, revealing several fresh bruises that were already beginning to darken against his skin. She frowned with concern and said, "Even though these wooden practice swords aren't supposed to be particularly dangerous, getting hit by them repeatedly must be extremely painful."

"I just wasn't paying proper attention to what I was doing," Steve admitted, trying not to flinch as Aayla's gentle fingers traced over his injuries with obvious care and concern.

"That much was pretty obvious," Anakin observed with a mixture of amusement and worry. "What's been occupying your thoughts, Steve? You're usually much more focused during our training sessions."

Aayla looked directly at Steve with her intelligent, perceptive eyes and asked, "Does this distraction have anything to do with young Peter Parker's arrival here and the information he shared with us about the situation back on Earth?"

Captain America nodded slowly, his expression growing more serious. "That's definitely a big part of it. Now we have another kid here in this dangerous galaxy, far from home and everything familiar. Meanwhile, Earth is still vulnerable and largely unprotected. I'm confident that Tony and Clint will remain vigilant and do everything they can to keep people safe, but I hate the idea of them having to handle everything alone like they're doing right now. There's only so much that two people can accomplish, no matter how capable they might be."

"From what Peter told us about the situation back home, it doesn't sound like Tony and Clint are planning to handle everything by themselves," Anakin pointed out reasonably.

"I'm genuinely glad to hear that they're recruiting new team members," Captain America admitted with obvious relief, "but that doesn't mean I'm any less worried about the overall situation."

"Well, normally I would suggest that you should put your trust in the Force and allow it to guide events toward the best possible outcome," Anakin said with a slight grin, "but since your planet doesn't seem to have any connection to the Force, I suppose all you can do is put your faith in your friends and their abilities."

"That's really all any of us can do at this point," Steve said with a heavy sigh.

"Sometimes, the most difficult thing we can do is simply trust our friends to handle their responsibilities without our direct involvement," Aayla said softly, her voice filled with understanding and compassion. "Besides, I think we should try to look at this entire situation from a more positive perspective."

This comment caused both Steve and Anakin to look at Aayla Secura with obvious confusion and curiosity.

"Think about it this way," she continued thoughtfully. "Ever since your arrival in this galaxy, there seems to be some kind of unknown but consistent connection forming between Earth and our reality. The fact that people keep arriving here suggests that there must be some kind of pathway or method that could potentially be used to return to Earth as well. So perhaps you just need to have sufficient faith and patience in your friends back home, Steve. From everything you've told me about them, they have never let you down when it truly mattered."

Steve blinked with surprise, then gave her a genuinely grateful smile. Anakin laughed with obvious delight at his fellow Jedi's wisdom.

"Where exactly did you learn to give such insightful advice?" Anakin asked with amused curiosity.

Aayla gave her fellow Jedi Knight a somewhat shy but pleased smile. "Have you forgotten who my master is, Skywalker? I learned from one of the wisest Jedi in the Order."

"Master Vos does have his moments of unexpected wisdom," Anakin acknowledged with a grin.

"But still..." Captain America's expression grew troubled again as he continued to wrestle with his concerns. "I just hate feeling so helpless and useless when there's so much that needs to be done. We now have two new teammates somewhere in this galaxy who probably need our help, and Wanda and Vision are still missing after all this time."

"To be fair, we have managed to locate most of your original team so far," Anakin pointed out reasonably. "The problem is that the way we found everyone was completely accidental and based on pure luck rather than any systematic search strategy."

"I suppose we can only hope for more fortunate coincidences and strokes of good luck to continue happening," Aayla said with a somewhat wry smile.

"But at least there is one positive aspect to our current situation that we can take some comfort in," Anakin said with a more optimistic tone.

Both Aayla and Captain America looked at Skywalker with obvious confusion, with Aayla asking, "What do you mean by that?"

Anakin shrugged casually. "It's actually quite simple when you think about it. No news is often the best news we can hope for in situations like this. If something truly terrible had happened to any of your missing teammates, the Force would almost certainly react and send out warning signals that we would be able to sense. But at least for right now, the Force remains calm and stable, which means we can be reasonably confident that your four missing teammates are not in any immediate mortal danger."

Captain America looked at the young Jedi Knight with an expression that remained stubbornly unconvinced, even though he understood intellectually that Anakin's reasoning made perfect sense. But considering all the unpredictable factors and variables involved in their situation, Steve knew he wouldn't be able to truly relax or feel at ease until he could actually see his missing teammates with his own eyes and confirm their safety personally. After all, accidents and unexpected disasters were always possible, and the universe seemed to have a talent for throwing curveballs when people least expected them.

Both Anakin and Aayla were genuinely amused by Captain America's persistently worried expression and his obvious inability to accept their reassurances. The beautiful Twi'lek Jedi gently patted his shoulder in a gesture of friendly comfort and support.

As the three friends continued their conversation about the challenges they faced, a young teenager from Earth was slowly beginning to adjust to his new and completely alien surroundings, trying to find his place in a galaxy far from everything he had ever known.
