Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

"Y-You're dead," Chloe stuttered as she slowly crab-walked away from Kinley's reanimated corpse.

"He is," Dromos grinned at Chloe's fear, "Just as you'll be… Allow me to introduce you to your killer. I'm Dromos."

"Dromos?" Chloe slowly got to her feet, assessing her opponent, "You're a demon?"

"And you're the one holding our King hostage on Earth," Dromos poked the air in Chloe's direction as he took one step forward. It was much more fun to play with one's food, after all. He didn't get to be the eye-popping champion of Hell for nothing, you know.

"Hostage?" Chloe didn't understand, "What are you talking about?"

"You know what I'm talking about," Dromos replied, "And now you're gonna pay the price."

Dromos lunged at Chloe but was intercepted by Dan tackling him into the island by Lucifer's bar. Dan shuffled off of Dromos quickly. He grabbed Dromos by his shirt, pulling him up before landing an upper-cut to his jaw.

But all that resulted in was Dromos giving him a bloody toothy-grin. Dan let out an "Oh, shit" before Dromos returned the favor and fisted Dan's shirt and hefted him completely into the air before tossing him into Lucifer's wall of scotch.

Dan was out cold as he landed heavily on the marbled floor in a rain of glass.

Dromos stalked over to Dan, ready to do more damage. He had never had the pleasure of hurting a live one before. Plus, he was just being thorough – if he got rid of this human too, all the better, right?

Before Dromos could take another step toward Dan, Chloe leaped on to Dromos' back and got him into a firm headlock.

Dromos let out a maniacal laugh before promptly grabbing Chloe's arm and flipping her over him. She landed on her back with a groan. She didn't get much of a reprieve before Dromos towered over her. He wrapped his hands around her neck and began to squeeze.

Chloe saw stars. It couldn't end like this. She and Lucifer were finally starting something. She couldn't leave her daughter. She couldn't let Trixie go through what she had gone through with losing her dad. Her eyes darted across the floor as she scrambled to catch a breath under Dromos' unrelenting grip. She spotted her crushed phone. There was no calling for help.

As they always do, her thoughts turned to Lucifer. He had said that he couldn't hear prayers, but he also said that they were all about intent and faith. If there was anything she knew with all of her heart and soul, she had faith in Lucifer Morningstar. It was a long shot. But she had to take it.

"Lucifer!" Chloe prayed, "Lucifer! I need you! Lucifer! Please! He's trying to kill me!"

Chloe's vision whited out.

The next thing she knew, the pressure on her throat ceased and she greedily sucked in air. After letting out a few coughs as she finally got enough air into her lungs, she was able to get her bearings back. Once again, her vision was filled with white, but this time it was a wall of white feathers?

Blinking into focus, she could make out Lucifer's dark mop of hair at the top of the wall of white feathers. Were those his wings? Wow… they were gorgeous. He had quite the wingspan.

He came! Her prayer worked!

What did he have in his hands? Oh, it was Father Kinley he had hefted into the air. No, not Kinley. It was Dromos the Demon. He had just tried to strangle her to death. Because apparently this was her life now. Lucifer was sure to kill him if she didn't stop him. Was that a fitting punishment? Who was she to judge when it came to Hell dynamics? Lucifer was the King of Hell, after all. But, no… he wasn't a killer.

"Lucifer," Chloe choked out, "Lucifer, stop!"

"Chloe?" Lucifer dropped Dromos to the ground and rushed over to Chloe's side, helping her sit up. He gently brushed her hair out of her face and cupped her face with his right palm, "Detective, are you all right?"

Chloe took in Lucifer's soft gaze. He still had his wings unfurled. He looked every bit an Avenging Angel. Her beautiful Devil. She placed her hand on top of the one Lucifer still had on her cheek.

"I'm okay, Lucifer," she reassured him.

"That human has a stronger hold on you than I thought," Dromos commented and spat out a glob of blood off to the side.

Lucifer and Chloe both turned to him, but Chloe kept Lucifer in place by simply keeping her hand on his, though their joined hands were now resting on Lucifer's knee from his knelt position at Chloe's side.

"Hold on me?! What in the bloody Hell are you on about?" Lucifer couldn't believe his ears.

"This human," Dromos nodded his head toward Chloe, "She has a hold on you… some kind of spell stopping you from returning home."

"That's why you tried to kill her?! Because I won't go back to Hell?" Lucifer furled his wings and helped Chloe stand up before he joined her.

"Yes!" Dromos was delighted that Lucifer finally understood, "And once she's out of the picture, you'll return home."

"Let me make myself perfectly clear," Lucifer snarled as he drew closer to Dromos. He fought back a grin at Dromos' Adam's apple bobbing as he entered his personal space.

"The only one keeping me on Earth is me. THIS is my home," Lucifer's eyes turned a fiery red as he grabbed Dromos by the lapels.

"You-You mean she really isn't keeping you here?" Dromos finally started to doubt it. Could it be? The Devil truly didn't wish to return to Hell by his own accord?

Dromos' answer to that was simply a stronger glow of fire in Lucifer's irises.

"Chloe Decker and all those I care about are OFF. LIMITS," Lucifer shook Dromos with each emphasized word, "Possession is still banned… And if any demons have a problem with that, they'll have to answer to me and immediate incineration…"

Dromos whimpered in Lucifer's grip.

"Now run home and spread the word," Lucifer growled. The body in Lucifer's grasp went limp. Lucifer released the empty meat suit with more force than was probably necessary before he slowly turned to look back at Chloe, afraid of what he would see.

He hadn't exposed his Devilish side to her to that extent before. Yes, she had endured his Devil Face for a long period of time, but he wasn't acting Devilish at the time. Would she be frightened of him now? Would this be the straw that broke the camel's back? They were finally going to start a relationship. Was that now out the window? Chloe had accepted him thus far, but had he pushed his luck?

Instead of a look of terror on her face, he was met with a look of pride (and perhaps a hint of arousal).

Detective Chloe Decker would never cease to amaze him.

"Lucifer, that was incredible," Chloe beamed.

"You don't think it was too much?" Lucifer still had to ask, even as she drew closer and bracketed her arms with his.

She shook her head.

"Actually, I have to admit… it was a little hot," Chloe smirked.

"De-tective," Lucifer grinned, "I think I like this side of you."

"But seriously, Lucifer. You saved me," Chloe rubbed her thumb over Lucifer's arm, "You saved Dan… Oh my God, Dan!"

Chloe shot over to behind what was left of the bar, Lucifer on her heels. Lucifer took in Dan's sorry state. He laid on his side, covered in glass. He must've taken on Dromos to try to save Chloe and paid the price – no match for a demon. Glass crunched under their feet as Chloe knelt down to Dan's unconscious form. She carefully brushed some of the glass off of him by his head, neck, and shoulder.

"Dan? Dan, can you hear me? Are you okay?" Chloe carefully helped Dan up into a sitting position. He let out a long moan as he slowly came back to consciousness, more glass fell to the floor as he sat up.

"Did we get him?" Dan winced.

"Yeah, Dan… we did," Chloe patted Dan's shoulder and let out a relieved breath. The chaos was finally over.
