Chapter 3 - Purge Protocol

The metallic tang in the air sharpened, cutting through the lingering ozone and void-ichor. Kael's upgraded **Void-Sense** painted three rapidly approaching signatures in his mind's eye – not the pulsing red of void-beasts, but cold, angular outlines of blue-white energy. **\[Targets Designated: Purifier Operatives. Threat Level: High.\]** They moved with terrifying speed and coordination, converging on his position from different rooftops, silent as ghosts.

The terrified woman scrambled away, vanishing into a side alley. Kael barely registered her flight. His entire focus narrowed to the approaching hunters. The Apotheosis Engine thrummed, not with hunger this time, but with a cold, calculating alertness. Data scrolled across the crimson interface:

**[ANALYZING PURIFIER SIGNATURES...]**

**[PROFILE: HUMAN-BASED ENHANCEMENT. CYBERNETIC/MAGITECH INTEGRATION.]**

**[PRIMARY WEAPON SYSTEMS DETECTED: KINETIC DISRUPTORS, RESONANCE DAMPENERS, ANOMALY-CONTAINMENT NETS.]**

**[WARNING: EQUIPMENT OPTIMIZED FOR ANOMALY NEUTRALIZATION.]**

**[ADVISORY: AVOID SUSTAINED KINETIC IMPACT. DISRUPT RESONANCE FIELDS. PRIORITIZE DISABLEMENT OVER ASSIMILATION (HIGH RISK OF CORRUPTED DATA).]**

Disablement? The Engine craved assimilation. The **Alpha Command Aura** fragment flickered within him, a low growl vibrating in his chest. *Prey approaches. Crush. Consume.* Kael shook his head, forcing the alien aggression down. The Engine's logic was sound. These weren't beasts; they were specialized hunters with tools designed to break him. He needed strategy, not just brute force.

The first Purifier dropped onto the street twenty meters away, landing in a crouch that absorbed the impact with unnatural grace. Clad in sleek, gunmetal grey armor segmented like insect carapace, their face obscured by a featureless, glowing blue visor. A rifle-like weapon hummed in their hands, its barrel pulsing with unstable energy. **\[Purifier Stalker. Level Estimate: 5.\]**

Before Kael could react, the Stalker raised the weapon. Not a projectile. A *wave*. A visible ripple of distorted air surged forward, silent and deadly. Kael's **Hyper-Adrenal Burst** was still cooling down. **\[Cooldown: 12 sec.\]** He threw himself sideways, the distortion wave clipping his left flank.

Agony. It felt like every molecule in that patch of skin and muscle was being vibrated apart. His new **Void-Chitin Plating (Lvl.2)** on his chest absorbed most of it with a resonant *clang*, but the unprotected flesh below his ribs screamed. He stumbled, feeling bruised internally. **\[WARNING: KINETIC RESONANCE DETECTED. TISSUE MICRO-FRACTURES DETECTED. UTILIZE COVER.\]**

Cover? The street was a wasteland of burnt cars and rubble. As Kael ducked behind a scorched delivery van, a high-pitched whine split the air. Two more Purifiers landed simultaneously on either side of the street. **\[Purifier Suppressor (Left). Level Estimate: 4.\]** **\[Purifier Resonator (Right). Level Estimate: 5.\]**

The Suppressor raised a bulky, drum-like device. With a heavy *THUMP*, a net of crackling blue energy erupted towards Kael's hiding spot. Not physical wire, but pure, binding force. The Resonator slammed a gauntleted fist onto the asphalt. A visible dome of shimmering energy pulsed outwards from them, washing over the area. Kael felt it instantly – a draining, *nullifying* pressure. The hum of the Apotheosis Engine faltered. His **Void-Sense** flickered, its range collapsing. **\[WARNING: RESONANCE DAMPENING FIELD ACTIVE. ENGINE EFFICIENCY REDUCED 30%. ANOMALOUS ABILITIES SUPPRESSED.\]**

The net was almost on him. Caught in the open, slowed by the dampening field, escape seemed impossible. The Engine flared, crimson text scrolling frantically:

**[ADVISORY: FIELD ORIGIN: PURIFIER RESONATOR.]**

**[ADVISORY: FIELD INTEGRITY DEPENDENT ON OPERATOR FOCUS.]**

**[DIRECTIVE: TERMINATE RESONATOR.]**

Terminate. Not disable. The Engine's cold pragmatism cut through the pain and the suppressing field. The **Alpha Command Aura** surged in agreement. *Kill the source.*

Kael didn't dodge the net. He *charged* through it.

Searing pain lanced through him as the crackling energy bonds tried to bind his limbs. His Void-Chitin resisted, sparking and sizzling where it touched, but the unprotected parts of his legs and left arm burned. He roared, a sound distorted by pain and the Aura's aggression, fueled by sheer desperation and the Engine's demand. He pushed through the net, tearing some strands, absorbing others in tiny, painful bursts of dark energy that stung more than nourished. **\[ASSIMILATING: MINOR ENERGY BINDING... CORRUPTED DATA. STABILITY -1%.\]** A useless, painful gain.

The Resonator, seeing Kael break through and charge directly at them, didn't flinch. They raised their other hand, gauntlet glowing brighter. The dampening field intensified, a physical weight pressing down on Kael, slowing him further. The Stalker took aim again. The Suppressor reloaded their net launcher.

He wouldn't reach the Resonator in time. The Engine calculated probabilities, flashing red. **\[SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 23%.\]**

*Use it.* The thought wasn't entirely his own. The Pack Tactics Instinct fragment, a lingering ghost, combined with the Engine's analysis and the Aura's predatory focus. He didn't target the Resonator. He targeted the *space between* the Resonator and the Stalker.

As the Stalker fired another kinetic distortion wave and the Suppressor launched a second net, Kael triggered his **Hyper-Adrenal Burst**. Time dilated. He saw the wave's path, the net's trajectory. With a surge of stolen strength from his **Enhanced Musculature**, he leaped *up*, not forward. Not high enough to clear the net, but high enough to place his armored body directly in the path of the distortion wave… aimed squarely at the Resonator.

The kinetic wave slammed into Kael's chest plate. Agony exploded through him, worse than before. **\[VOID-CHITIN PLATING DAMAGE: SEVERE. INTEGRITY: 52%. INTERNAL TRAUMA DETECTED.\]** He felt ribs crack again. But the plating held, absorbing and redirecting a significant portion of the force. Crucially, it deflected the wave.

The redirected wave of vibrating force slammed into the Resonator's shimmering energy dome.

The effect was catastrophic. The Resonator's visor flared blindingly bright. A feedback shriek, both electronic and biological, tore from them as their own dampening field violently destabilized. The shimmering dome flickered wildly and collapsed with a concussive *whump*. The oppressive weight vanished instantly.

Kael hit the ground hard, rolling, gasping, his chest a furnace of pain. But the Engine roared back to life, freed from suppression. **\[RESONANCE DAMPENING FIELD DISABLED. ENGINE EFFICIENCY RESTORED.\]** His **Void-Sense** snapped back out to 100m, sharper than ever.

The Resonator staggered, clutching their head, their equipment sparking. Vulnerable.

Kael didn't hesitate. Pain was fuel. Survival was the only directive. He pushed off the ground, ignoring the screaming protest from his ribs, and closed the distance in three powerful strides fueled by rage and Engine-enhanced muscles. The Resonator looked up, visor flickering erratically, raising their gauntlet in a feeble defense.

Kael's obsidian claws lashed out. Not to assimilate. To *destroy*.

He aimed for the glowing resonator core on the Purifier's chest. His claws punched through the advanced armor like it was wet cardboard. There was a sickening crunch, a shower of sparks, and a choked gurgle from behind the visor. The Purifier collapsed, their equipment going dark.

**[TARGET NEUTRALIZED: PURIFIER RESONATOR.]**

**[ASSIMILATION OPPORTUNITY: LOW YIELD (CORRUPTED TECH/BIOMASS). RISK: HIGH (POTENTIAL SYSTEM BACKLASH).]**

**[ADVISORY: NEGATE.]**

The Engine's warning was stark. Kael pulled his claws back, dripping not just Purifier blood, but sizzling blue coolant and strange, luminous fluid. The body was already emitting a high-pitched whine and the smell of burning circuits. He left it. The cost wasn't worth the meager gain.

The Suppressor shouted, a distorted sound through their helmet, firing their net launcher again in panic. The Stalker, cool and efficient, was already repositioning, their kinetic disruptor humming as it charged another shot.

Kael spun, his **Void-Sense** tracking both. The Suppressor was closer, reloading clumsily after firing the net. Level 4. Less armored. Easier prey. The **Alpha Command Aura** pulsed, urging him towards the weaker target. *Crush the lesser. Then the strong.*

He charged the Suppressor. The net flew wide as the Purifier fumbled. Kael closed the gap, dodging a wild shot from their sidearm – a searing beam of light that scorched the asphalt where he'd been. He slammed into the Suppressor before they could bring their bulky net launcher to bear. His armored fist, claws retracted for pure blunt force, smashed into the Purifier's helmet.

The reinforced material cracked. The Purifier reeled. Kael grabbed the net launcher with his free hand. **\[ANALYZING: ENERGY BINDING PROJECTOR... COMPLEX MAGITECH. ASSIMILATION RISK: EXTREME. RECOMMEND DESTRUCTION.\]** He didn't need the Engine's advice. He wrenched the weapon sideways, snapping the housing, and slammed the heavy drum end into the Purifier's already damaged helmet. Once. Twice. The visor shattered. The Purifier went limp.

He didn't stop to finish them. The Stalker's disruptor hum reached a peak. Kael threw the ruined net launcher aside and dove behind a pile of rubble as another distortion wave ripped through the space he'd occupied.

He was down to one enemy. The most dangerous one. Level 5. Cool, professional. Undamaged.

Kael peeked over the rubble. The Stalker had taken cover behind a collapsed billboard frame, their weapon trained on his position. A stalemate. But Kael could feel the Engine's stability dropping again from the damage he'd sustained. **\[STABILITY: 58%.\]** He needed to end this fast.

His **Void-Sense** pinged again, frantic. Not the Stalker. Something else. High above. Fast. *Very* fast. Descending. **\[WARNING: INCOMING ORBITAL SIGNATURE. PROFILE: SYSTEM ENFORCER SCOUT. ESTIMATED IMPACT: 45 SECONDS.\]**

Liam's dying words: *"They're coming... the Purifiers..."* And Brutus: *"The Purifiers..."* They hadn't been the only hunters. The Purifiers were just the vanguard. The *real* threat, the System's clean-up crew, was about to drop in.

The Stalker must have received the same alert. Their head tilted slightly, likely checking an internal display. It was a microsecond of distraction.

Kael exploded from cover, not towards the Stalker, but perpendicular, putting a burnt-out bus between them. He didn't have a plan, only the desperate need to disengage before the Enforcer arrived. He couldn't fight both. The Engine screamed agreement. **\[PRIORITY: EVASION. SYSTEM ENFORCER THREAT: CATASTROPHIC.\]**

He heard the Stalker's disruptor fire, the wave tearing through the bus's thin metal hull but missing him. He kept moving, leaping over debris, heading deeper into the ruined cityscape, away from the last Purifier, away from the impending orbital strike. His **Void-Sense** tracked the descending Enforcer signature – a cold, white-hot pinpoint of overwhelming power growing larger and larger in his perception. It felt like judgment descending from heaven.

He needed to vanish. Now. But how? The Engine pulsed, scanning frantically.

**[ANALYZING ENVIRONMENT...]**

**[DETECTED: SUBTERRANEAN STRUCTURE - 78 METERS NORTH-NORTHEAST. ENTRANCE PARTIALLY COLLAPSED.]**

**[PROFILE: PRE-INTEGRATION SUBWAY ACCESS TUNNEL.]**

**[ANOMALY SIGNATURE MASKING POTENTIAL: HIGH (GEOLOGICAL INTERFERENCE).]**

**[ADVISORY: REACH STRUCTURE. IMMEDIATE.]**

A subway tunnel. Underground. Cover. Masking. His only chance.

Kael poured every ounce of stolen strength and speed into his legs, the Enhanced Musculature burning as he sprinted towards the location his Void-Sense indicated. Behind him, he heard the Stalker giving pursuit, their movements swift and relentless. Above, the descending Enforcer signature filled his senses like an approaching sun.

He spotted it – a jagged hole in the street, partially hidden by rubble, leading down into utter darkness. The entrance was tight, unstable-looking.

He didn't slow down. He dove headfirst into the black maw of the tunnel just as a blinding white light, silent and pure, engulfed the street behind him. The world turned white. Then black.

He hit the concrete slope inside hard, tumbling down into the deeper darkness. Above, the light vanished as quickly as it came. But he felt the aftermath – a wave of pure, sterilizing energy that washed over the entrance, sealing it shut with a sound like thunder and shattering stone. Dust rained down on him.

He lay in the absolute blackness, breathing raggedly, every bruise and micro-fracture screaming. His Void-Chitin plates felt cracked in places. But he was alive. For now.

His crimson interface flickered weakly in the dark:

**[EVASION SUCCESSFUL.]**

**[SYSTEM ENFORCER SCOUT DEPARTING ORBIT.]**

**[PURIFIER STALKER STATUS: TERMINATED (ORBITAL CLEANSE).]**

**[ENGINE STABILITY: 54% - CRITICAL. BIOMASS REQUIRED FOR REPAIRS.]**

**[WARNING: SUBSERVIENT VOID ENTITY DETECTED IN VICINITY (Lvl. ?). PROXIMITY: HIGH.]**

Kael froze. The utter silence of the tunnel pressed in. Then, he heard it. A wet, slithering sound. Close. And the faint, familiar pulse of void-essence. But different. Older. Hungrier. And it was coming from *beneath* him.

He wasn't alone in the dark. The Purifiers and the Enforcer were gone.
