Chapter 6 - Jessica

The next morning at Greenwich Academy felt different. The air, crisp and slightly chilly, carried a buzz that wasn't just the usual pre-class chatter.

Nate could feel eyes on him, more intensely than yesterday. It wasn't just curiosity anymore; it was a mix of apprehension, confusion, and a burgeoning respect.

His dramatic turnaround in calculus, coupled with his unexpected defiance of Mark and his crew, had sent ripples through the school's intricate social hierarchy.

He strode through the main hall, a silent, confident presence. His Charisma attribute, now at 1.5, subtly influenced how others perceived him, making him seem more approachable, more compelling.

He wasn't overtly trying to be friendly; he was simply being.

As he approached his locker, he saw Mark and his usual hangers-on, glaring. They were whispering, occasionally casting furious glances his way.

Nate met Mark's gaze directly, a cool, unreadable expression on his face. Mark flinched, turning away first. Good. The message is sinking in.

His first class was English Literature, where they were discussing Shakespeare. Nate found the old bard's themes of power, betrayal, and love fascinating, especially now that he was living a life steeped in similar complexities.

When Ms. Albright, a stern but fair teacher, asked for interpretations of a particularly dense passage from Hamlet, a few hands tentatively went up. Then Nate raised his.

"Nathaniel?" Ms. Albright seemed surprised. The 'old Nate' barely knew how to spell Shakespeare, let alone analyze him.

"I believe Hamlet's true madness isn't necessarily feigned for political maneuvering," Nate began, his voice clear and articulate, commanding the attention of the room. "Rather, it's a profound manifestation of existential dread and the psychological burden of a duty he feels ill-equipped to perform. His soliloquies aren't just monologues; they're internal struggles, a battle between a desire for vengeance and a deep-seated philosophical contemplation of life and death, inaction versus decisive action."

A stunned silence fell over the classroom. Students exchanged bewildered glances.

Ms. Albright slowly nodded, a thoughtful expression on her face. "Remarkable, Mr. Thorne. A truly nuanced interpretation. I confess, I hadn't quite expected that from you." Her tone held a hint of awe.

[Mental Challenge Completed: +1.0 Intelligence Attribute Point]

[Improved Communication (Intellectual): +0.5 Charisma Attribute Point]

"Another full point for Intelligence, and half a point for Charisma?" Nate thought, a satisfied hum echoing in his mind. "This is amazing! It really incentivizes not just knowing the answers, but articulating them effectively." His Intelligence was now at 3.1 (2.1 + 1.0), making him over three times smarter than an average person, and his Charisma at 2.0 (1.5 + 0.5), significantly enhancing his ability to influence and connect with others.

The combined effect filled him with a surge of confident satisfaction.

Later, during lunch, Nate was halfway through a surprisingly decent Caesar salad when he overheard a frantic conversation from a nearby table.

Jessica Matthews, one of the 'school beauties' – known for her vibrant red hair, sparkling green eyes, and quick wit – was in distress. She was surrounded by her friends, all looking equally worried.

"I don't know what to do!" Jessica exclaimed, pulling at her hair. "My laptop crashed last night, completely. And my entire history project, the one that's due tomorrow, was on it! Mrs. Henderson said no extensions, no excuses!"

Nate's ears perked up. This was his territory. Software, data recovery, problem-solving.

He quickly pieced together the details from their panicked whispers: the project was a crucial part of Jessica's grade, and her old laptop was known for being unreliable.

He felt a subtle nudge from the System.

[Potential Opportunity: "Aid in Crisis"]

He considered it for a moment. This was a perfect chance to subtly extend a hand, to genuinely help someone, rather than just deflect bullies.

It was also a chance to show a different side of Nathaniel Thorne, the problem-solver, not the jerk.

He stood up and walked over to their table. Jessica and her friends looked up, startled, as the infamous Nate Thorne approached. Whispers died down.

"Everything alright, Jessica?" Nate asked, his voice calm and empathetic. His Charisma attribute made his approach feel comforting, not intrusive.

Jessica looked wary. "Nate? Yeah, fine. Just… my laptop died. And my project with it." She sighed dramatically. "I'm doomed."

"Did you try anything to recover it?" Nate asked, his technical brain already whirring. "Like booting into safe mode, or a live USB, or checking the hard drive status?"

Jessica stared blankly. "Uh, no. I just… kept hitting the power button."

Nate nodded. "Alright. Look, I might be able to help. I'm pretty good with tech. What kind of laptop is it?"

Jessica's eyes widened. "Really? You know about computers?" The 'old Nate' wouldn't know a byte from a bite. "It's an old Dell Inspiron. But it's totally dead. Black screen."

"Sometimes it's just a loose connection, or a corrupted boot sector. Or a dying drive, but even then, data can often be recovered." Nate shrugged. "If you want, bring it to my place after school. I've got a full setup in my home lab, and I can take a look. No promises, but I'll do my best."

Jessica hesitated, glancing at her friends, who looked equally astonished. "Are you… serious? You'd really do that?"

"Why wouldn't I?" Nate replied, offering a reassuring, genuine smile. "It's a crappy situation. Happy to help if I can."

One of Jessica's friends, a blonde girl named Sarah, chimed in cautiously, "Nate, I thought you only cared about football and… parties."

Nate's smile didn't waver. "People change, Sarah. Or maybe, you just never really knew me." He turned back to Jessica. "So? After school? I'll need the laptop and anything else relevant to the project."

Jessica's face broke into a hopeful, grateful smile. "Oh my god, Nate! Yes! Yes, thank you! You're a lifesaver! I'll tell my driver to drop me off at your place."

[Opportunity Seized: "Aid in Crisis" Quest Accepted.]

[Reward upon completion: Significant Charisma Attribute Points, Potential Relationship Progression, Undisclosed Bonus.]

Nate felt a surge of satisfaction. This was different from just gaining points through workouts.

This was about building genuine connections, solving real problems for people who truly needed it. And it was exactly what the harmonious harem part of his future was built on.

After school, Jessica, looking nervous but hopeful, arrived at the Thorne estate in her own sleek car. Nate led her down to his (new Nate's) state-of-the-art home lab, a room filled with high-end computers, servers, and specialized diagnostic equipment. Jessica's jaw dropped.

"Woah," she breathed, "this is… incredible."

Nate pulled on a pair of anti-static gloves. "Just a hobby. Let's see that laptop."

He took her Dell Inspiron, quickly connecting it to a diagnostic rig. His Intelligence, now at 3.1, coupled with his past life's software engineering expertise, made quick work of the initial assessment.

The laptop's hard drive was indeed failing, but not catastrophically. The data was mostly intact, though fragmented. It would take time, but it was recoverable.

"Okay," Nate said, turning to Jessica. "The good news is, I can recover most, if not all, of your project data. The bad news is, it'll take a few hours. This hard drive is on its last legs, and it's a delicate process."

Jessica's shoulders slumped slightly, then she brightened. "A few hours is fine! As long as I can get it back, I don't care! You really are a genius, Nate!"

Nate spent the next few hours meticulously working, his focus absolute. He used specialized software, tweaked settings, and manually pulled fragmented data, his enhanced Dexterity and reflexes allowing for precise, lightning-fast work on the keyboard.

Jessica sat nearby, initially fidgeting, then slowly relaxing, watching him work with a mixture of fascination and growing admiration.

She saw a side of Nate Thorne no one at school knew existed: focused, intelligent, genuinely helpful.

As the last byte of data was recovered and safely transferred to a new, pristine USB drive, Nate leaned back, stretching. "Alright. All done. Here's your project, fully intact. I also backed up everything else I could find on your drive onto this." He handed her the USB. "And I'd highly recommend getting a new laptop. This one won't last much longer."

Jessica gasped, snatching the USB and looking at it as if it were pure gold. "You… you actually did it! Oh my god, Nate! You saved my life! You saved my GPA! How can I ever thank you?" Her eyes, sparkling green, were wide with genuine relief and profound gratitude.

She leaned over and impulsively hugged him, a tight, warm embrace that caught him off guard.

Nate instinctively returned the hug, a pleasant warmth spreading through him. He hadn't expected such a direct show of affection. "No problem, Jessica. Happy to help."

[Quest Completed: "Aid in Crisis"]

[Reward: +2.0 Charisma Attribute Points, +1.0 Intelligence Attribute Point, Relationship Progression: Jessica Matthews (Friendly -> Appreciative).]

"Two full points in Charisma, and another point in Intelligence!" Nate was staggered.

This was truly accelerated growth. His Charisma was now at 4.0 (2.0 + 2.0), making him four times more charming and influential than an average person. His Intelligence had soared to 4.1 (3.1 + 1.0), pushing him well into the realm of super-genius.

He was not just physically powerful, but becoming immensely charming and intellectually formidable.

This combination of attributes was rapidly setting him apart, confirming his path to being truly "OP."

Jessica pulled back, her cheeks slightly flushed, a lingering smile on her face. "You really are amazing, Nate. No one else would have even tried. Everyone thinks you're just… I don't know… a jock who causes trouble. But you're not." She looked at him with a new, searching gaze. "You're actually… really kind."

Nate felt a genuine blush touch his own cheeks. He wasn't used to such heartfelt praise, especially not from a "school beauty." "I appreciate that, Jessica."

"You know," she said, her tone suddenly thoughtful, "you should really tutor me in history. My grades are terrible, and you clearly know everything." She paused, a playful glint in her eye. "Maybe you could help me change my bad habits."

Nate smiled, his gaze holding hers, a hint of something deeper in his eyes. "I think I could arrange that. And to be honest, Jessica... your 'bad habits' might just be the reason I'm talking to you like this right now." He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a low, suggestive tone. "They certainly make you... more interesting."

...

As Jessica's driver pulled away, Nate stood by the window, watching her go. He felt a deep sense of satisfaction.

This wasn't just about gaining power; it was about truly helping others, building genuine connections, and experiencing the simple joy of being kind.

He was already attracting attention, subtly unraveling the 'dumb jock's' legacy, and beginning to draw the first threads of his harmonious harem.

This Marvel Universe was turning out to be everything he'd ever imagined, and more. He was no longer a solitary genius; he was Nathaniel Thorne, and he was here to make a real difference. And his System was clearly delighted to help him every step of the way.
