Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The bitter past

The three men, each climbed in his car and headed to the Lamech's home. The situation had escalated and the sheriff owed and explanation to his fellow law enforcers, and the district general in charge of the police. He needed an explanation to give to the police chief, Xera.

It was around sunset, and at home, Lamech was seated under the shade of a big oak. By his side was a glass table, and on it was a glass of cocktail. A cool breeze was sweeping through the compound, giving it a pure equatorial environment.

The three cars arrived at the home compound, led by the police car. Their arrival alarmed Lamech, and he sat up from the leaning position he had assumed. Spotting his car behind, which Reyes had taken, and Reyes' car which Sam was driving, he grew more confused.

"What's the meaning of this? Is my son okay? Has he got into any trouble?," he thought, before the cars came to a stop.

Ginn, who was also seated at a distance, stood up and came closer hurriedly, to see what was going on.

"Dad was right! Minteh must have run into some trouble!," Ginn thought worriedly, her heart pounding fast.

Hearing the commotion outside, their mother also came out. She couldn't make out what it meant, but something seemed not right. This wasn't the way the sheriff visited, though he was a family friend.

"Long time no see sheriff!," Lamech said, standing up to meet him with a handshake.

The sheriff removed his hat and bowed respectfully twice, to the old man.

He then shook hands with Lamech.

"Mr. Kubo, indeed it has been a looooong time! How have you been?," the sheriff greeted him, with a warm smile.

"Sheriff Max, long time no see...!," Ginn bowed to him once, before greeting him, "how have you been doing?"

The sheriff lifted his eyes to meet Ginn's gaze.

"Ginn, nice to meet you after a long time. I am sorry for your loss. I didn't manage to make it to the burial of your daughter. I am sorry!," sheriff Max replied to her, with a solemn expression.

There was an awkward silence, between the two, and Ginn, with teary eyes said, how far with the case, sheriff Max?," though she was emotional, she spoke with a tone full of mockery.

Sheriff Max and Ginn were once lovers and the two were regarded as the lovebirds of Mitete town. Almost everyone anticipated the pair to be an item, and also sheriff was planning to propose to her. Things took a turn when he decided to join the force, which thing the two hadn't agreed to. To worsen the whole thing, he decided to take that step, without even discussing it with his to-be fiancee.

"This man is selfish! He doesn't think about me. He is so self-centered! I have to reconsider my decision of being with him!," Ginn had told his father, Lamech.

"Do what seems good and right to you my daughter; I don't want to see you in pain!," Lamech had advised her.

A week before Max had prepared to propose to her, she confronted him, after learning about his application to join the police force, and with tears in her eyes, she said to him, "I thought I had got someone I can build a life with, have children and age with, but you have disappointed me! You're are so self-centered and selfish! How could you make such a destiny defining decision without even discussing it with the person you claim to love? How can I build a life with a dictator?"

She had then turned and without looking behind, had driven straight to her father's house, weeping profusely; for she loved him dearly.

Max had followed her on his BMW super bike, but was too slow to catch up with her. He had come to her family house and found Lamech and his wife looking at each other confused. Ginn had passed by the couple crying, and without a word had run to her bedroom.

When Max arrived, he was greeted by Lamech Kubo and his wife, but was concerned about Ginn most.

"What have you done to my daughter?," Ginn's mother, Esther had demanded Max, with a serious tone.

"Calm down darling; it's okay!," Lamech had intervened.

"What do you mean by 'calm down'? Do you know something I don't know?," Esther had demanded, confused by the calmness of her husband.

"Let's first take a seat, and we shall talk about this, shall we?," Lamech had suggested.

The three sat in the the sitting room on the sofa and Lamech was seated between the raging Esther and the heartbroken Max. They sat in awkward silence before Lamech exhaling deeply, and then cleared his throat twice.

He then turned to Esther, his wife and said to her, "darling, listen to me carefully! Our daughter and Max are known for their affection one for another...," he posed to attract the attention to himself.

"But a few days back, Max made a decision that literally broke Ginn's heart!," Lamech had concluded.

"I didn't know it would be such a great deal!," Max had snapped, defensively.

"It wasn't a big deal, huh?," Ginn had snapped, catching everyone in the sitting room completely unprepared. Max literally had to fight the urge to jump from where he was seated. Her voice was like that a roaring lion.

Esther was also surprised. She had never seen her daughter this angry.

With tears in her eyes, she had commanded Max, "get outta here! I don't want to see you again, you selfish freak. After everything we have been through, you decided to sideline me, knowing very well that we were literally an item. I never imagined that it would be a person like you to break my heart!"

She then broke down and wept bitterly.

Max had lost words, and had lost every ounce of energy to defend himself. He had messed everything up.

He hadn't been willing to back down from the force, and neither had he been prepared to swallow his ego and apologize to Ginn.

"This meeting is over! I am done with you. Get out of this house!," Ginn had said decisively, not letting her parents intervene.

Max had moved out of the house shamefully, climbed his bike and rode away, without looking back.

He had remained as a family friend, since then, at a distance from Ginn though.

Now here they were, like at a Mexican stand off.

"Hopefully the investigation is smooth...," Ginn said scornfully, before being silenced by Lamech.

"Ginn, it's okay! This is not the time! Please!," he pleaded with her.

She backed down, with tears in her eyes.

"Hell has no fury compared to a woman scorned!," sheriff Max said, exhaling deeply.
