Chapter 19 - Chapter Nineteen: The Echo of an Ending

Kevin stood at the doorway, watching them leave.

Chloe's figure was steady, Carter's small hand curled into hers, their silhouettes stretching against the fading light.

Walking away.

Not looking back.

Sophia exhaled sharply beside him, arms crossed.

"Well, good riddance," she muttered. "She was never worth the headache."

Kevin didn't respond.

Sophia scoffed. "She's acting like this is some grand new beginning. As if she won. When really, she's just running—because that's all she's ever been good at."

Kevin clenched his jaw.

A flicker of irritation.

Sophia kept going. "And Marquesia? Seriously? She's dragging Carter into a whole different world just to prove she doesn't need you. It's pathetic."

Something cracked.

Kevin exhaled sharply, rubbing his face, the frustration building—not at Chloe, but at Sophia.

"Enough," he muttered.

Sophia blinked. "What?"

Kevin turned slightly, eyes sharp, not angry—just done.

"I said enough," he repeated. "She's gone. This is over."

Sophia stiffened. "I didn't say anything wrong—"

"You never do, do you?" Kevin scoffed, shaking his head.

Sophia's brows furrowed, a flicker of hurt slipping through her mask.

Kevin sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.

He pitied her.

Not because he loved her.

Not because he wanted her.

But because she thought this was her win.

And yet—she didn't realize that Chloe had walked away with everything.
