Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The non-human Rexar

Ray's eyes bulged as he saw Rexar's status. 'T-those stats? and elf? what's an elf? i-is this a Nightstalker?' Ray tried to calm his tumultuous thoughts and focus on Archery, but the feeling of a beast directly behind him made the boy shake in fear.

Rexar was easily able to pick up on the boys fluctuating emotions. 'hmm? the second this human brat looked at me he got scared? what's wrong. did he see through my disguise? but that's impossible right. not even that old bastard Alex could see through my disguise'.

Although Alex Eartine was the strongest human in Silverbranch town. Rexar was confident he could dispatch the man in a one on one, the problem was these humans would never allow a one on one fight. they'd swarm him like ant's. Even facing a thousand at once wasn't off the table if they found him.

Rexar had done the count long ago, This town alone had over 8000 residents within its walls. and 1000+ soldiers alongside 400 knights. Rexar decided in a instant, 'i have to silence him.'

"Cough, i can feel your a talented young kid at archery. Would you like to come with me and talk it out over dinner? or tea? standing here this long isn't good for my back you know."

Ray felt goosebumps run down his spine. "N-not at all sir, Afterall i don't even know your name... i-it'd be rude to intrude. My teacher should be looking for me soon."

Rexar scoffed under his breath. 'sure a talentless weasel like you has a teacher, i saw your form before.' but he didn't let his thoughts show. "I'm Rexar Silverskin, and as a member of the Silverskin family my relatives are always quite busy and its hard to find company, are you sure you can't spare some time for poor old me?"

'This fucking monster in human skin really want's to kill me doesn't he.' Just as Ray was about to respond he heard Elana's call from the distance. She was coming for him.

"T-that's my teacher see." Ray lifted his right hand from the longbow, and pointed to the left of him, Rexar's gaze followed and he froze.

his sight landed on the gorgeous 23 year old woman decorated head to toe in her armor. holding her helmet under her right arm. Elana's Weaponry had shown a change in choice however.

With a greatsword strapped to her back and shield-like attachments clipped onto her arm's though small in size they certainly looked like they could take a beating.

"Sorry for taking so long, just got done with a spar." she had a rosy colour in her cheeks as she spoke. flushed from over-exertion. Making her feel particularly attractive to those who saw.

'Don't attack, don't attack' Ray begged in his mind as he looked at Rexar's twitching facial expression.

Rexar looked at the surrounding situation, a lot of soldiers and knights were setting their gaze on the gorgeous woman ahead. He couldn't make any move even if he wanted to.

"you've got a talented future kid, go for now as your teachers calling. come back tomorrow and I'll give you more pointers".

Ray glanced at him and a daring plan formed in his mind. He decided to do something extremely ballsy, "thanks Nightstalker, tomorrow it is then." he whispered quiet enough to where only Rexar heard him.

"Teacher! could you teach me about greatbows? I've been trying to learn but to no luck."

Elana looked at Rexar, then Ray and the longbow he was holding.

"of course you didn't have any luck, longbows are different to greatbows, besides have you ever used a greatbow or any bow for that matter?" she felt incredulous. Elana could clearly feel the heavy atmosphere between the duo, but since Ray didn't bring it up. neither did She."

Rexar felt confused, "he didn't mention it to her? why not." Rexar was just coming to terms with the end of his life. And yet he gained another chance?

...

The next day quickly rolled around and Ray went to the same archery lane as last time, not any more geared than before. nor did he do any preparation except writing something in his personal journal. In code just in case Rexar had any plans.

The constant plucking of bowstrings rang out on the field as Ray fired shot after shot when he heard two pairs of footsteps behind him. Ray glanced back. 'two men, Rexar and... Observe'

Varin looked like he was 20, but that couldnt be further from the truth as he was nearing his 50th. He worked the Gateguard alongside his former dorm-mates, the four of them had been side-by-side since childhood and none would have ever guessed he was less than human.

if Ray had been lucid during his solo trip outside the walls. The boy could have remembered him as the courier that called for reinforcements.

"You brought your son Rexar?" he spoke out softly.

"You, why didn't you tell anyone what's your plan" Varin stopped 2 steps away from Ray asked.

The father and son were confused, whilst Rexar came from the outside Varin had been born here and raised as a human. So the man would rather not throw everything away if he had a option.

"A truce, teach me. i can see your both experts in many things, in return i will help you. If not then we can go our separate ways, as long as you don't harm me i won't tell anyone." Yes Ray wanted a truce with monsters... only temporarily but this is the choice he came to after deliberation last night.

'If they teach me mastery, I can reach 15 Agi. Then I just need Strength and Mind. And who knows? Maybe they'll help me kill someone, test if humans give EXP. If I'm caught, I pin it on them.'

The corner of his lips rose, 'i feel like such a evil mastermind. they won't refuse.. right?'

'The father and son duo looked at each other, really a Truce? with a child? but... What do we have to lose? he already knows our secret.' The shadows beneath their feet squirmed and connected.

They were communicating, just.. silently through their Deep shadows.

...

Whilst the two thought about it, Ray didn't stop firing arrows. giving the illusion to any outsiders that the duo was helping to teach him. yet even still not a single arrow even hit the 10 meter target. it seemed that Ray truly had 0 talent in archery.
