Storms of Destiny
Chapter 17: Kaiden and Sakani's Descent
The air grew colder with each step.
Kaiden and Sakani descended into the glacial heart of FrostBane Isle, the walls of the cavern pulsing with a ghostly blue glow. Ice crystals clung to the jagged stone like fragile glass, catching the flickering light and scattering it across the narrow tunnel in fragmented, eerie shards.
Sakani tugged her thick fur cloak tighter, the biting chill sinking deep into her bones. Beside her, Kaiden strode forward effortlessly, his breath barely visible, his face unbothered by the cold.
"How are you not freezing?" she asked, eyeing him from beneath her hood. "It's like you're walking through a summer breeze."
Kaiden allowed a smirk to slip across his face as he brushed a stray strand of dark hair from his forehead. "Let's just say I've been through worse." His eyes gleamed. "Besides… a Flaminger doesn't really feel the cold."
Sakani arched a brow but said nothing. She'd learned not to pry too deep when Kaiden dropped those cryptic hints. Instead, she shifted her focus forward, grip tightening on the shaft of her spear as a strange tension crept into the silence.

The Icy Labyrinth
The corridor narrowed, its frozen walls jagged and uneven. Thin sheets of ice groaned beneath their feet, threatening to fracture at any wrong step. Above them, icicles hung like silent blades, suspended death.
"This place is a death trap," Sakani muttered. "If we don't freeze to death, we'll fall through the ice."
Kaiden's hand hovered near the hilt of his sword as his eyes scanned the frosted walls. "Stay close. If anything happens, we fight our way out."
The path twisted, curved, and doubled back. Each turn looked identical to the last—white, cold, lifeless.
"Is it just me," Sakani murmured, glancing behind them, "or are we going in circles?"
Kaiden crouched, running his fingers lightly along the surface of the icy floor. "No," he said, his voice grim. "The path is shifting. This isn't just a cavern… It's a maze."
---
An Icy Ambush
A deep rumble echoed through the tunnel.
Sakani froze, her instincts flaring. Her fingers tightened around her weapon as her gaze darted into the gloom.
"What was that?" she whispered.
Kaiden's blade slid free with a metallic whisper. His eyes narrowed. "We're not alone."
From the shadows, they emerged—tall figures clad in shimmering armor that resembled cracked glaciers, their movements unnaturally synchronized. Ice Warriors. Dozens of them, each wielding blades and axes forged from frost and cruelty.
Kaiden's lips curved into a tight grin. "Looks like the welcoming committee's here."
Sakani twirled her spear into position, feet sliding into a battle stance. "Let's make it a short visit."
---
Battle in the Ice
The clash was instant.
One of the warriors lunged at Kaiden, blade descending like a frozen comet. He met the attack head-on, their weapons sparking violently as they collided. Kaiden's sword moved with ruthless grace—slashing, parrying, striking. He slipped between attacks like flowing water, each movement precise, economical.
Sakani ducked beneath a swinging axe, her spear slicing upward in a flash of silver. The Ice Warrior's chest shattered like fragile glass, shards spiraling through the air.
"They just keep coming!" she shouted, turning to parry another blow.
Kaiden spun, his blade cleaving through two enemies in a single arc. "Then we keep fighting until none are left."
The tunnel rang with the music of battle—metal against metal, the crunch of ice, the grunts of effort. Slowly, the tide turned. The warriors began to falter, their numbers thinning under the relentless assault of the two warriors.
---
A Mysterious Escape
Silence fell.
Kaiden stood still, blade dripping with the last traces of frost and blood. Sakani exhaled, her breath misting in the frozen air.
"That was too easy," Kaiden said cautiously, eyes still scanning the darkness.
Sakani raised an eyebrow, wiping her brow. "Easy? Remind me to never get on your bad side."
But before a response could form, the ice beneath them groaned violently. Cracks raced across the floor like lightning bolts. The walls shuddered. The maze was changing again.
"Kaiden!"
He grabbed her arm and pulled her forward. "Run!"
They sprinted through shifting corridors, the world behind them threatening to collapse. Paths sealed, new ones opened, and the light grew dimmer.
Just as Sakani's strength began to fade, the two stumbled into a vast chamber—and froze.
---
Reunion in the Frost
Two figures stood across the icy floor.
One wore a straw hat that tilted slightly with his crooked grin. The other leaned against the wall, a black cloak draped around his shoulders.
"Pol!" Sakani cried, relief breaking through her exhaustion. "Royuko!"
Pol turned with a smile. "Took you long enough. Thought the ice maze swallowed you whole."
Kaiden let out a quiet breath, a rare flicker of a smile appearing on his lips. "It almost did."
Royuko chuckled, his voice low and casual. "Hope the others are having a better time."
Pol's grin faded, his tone hardening. "We wait here. No one gets left behind. Stay close… This place has a habit of pulling us apart."
The four warriors stood together at the edge of the unknown. Behind them, the ice whispered its silent threats, but none of them flinched. Their unity was their warmth in the heart of the cold.
And the depths of FrostBane Isle still had more to reveal.
