Nox’s heartfelt words seemed to have their desired effect as Syd came to the county a few days later. That day, Nox felt genuine admiration from his father for the first time. He felt as though everything would turn for the better from then on.
Yet, Syd’s stay was short-lived, lasting only two days before he departed once more. He even brushed off his wife’s attempt to grasp his coat, leaving his young son behind to care for her.
“I must return and protect Her Highness, so you stay and look after your mother.”
He said return. That single word stabbed Nox’s heart like a dagger. He could no longer deny that his father’s home was the palace, not the county, and that his family was Apollonia, not Nox and his mother.
“I’ll be back soon.”
He promised before mounting his horse and running off, just as he always did.
The key difference this time was that he never returned.
