Chapter 392 - Chapter 392 — Murder in Broad Daylight

Chapter 392 — Murder in Broad Daylight

"Believe it or not~

The time just hasn't come yet~"

"Dean" hummed the tune casually as he walked out of the room.

"Wait!" Hobbes immediately chased after him.

"Dean!" Hobbes shouted.

"Huh?" Dean turned around, looking completely confused by his surroundings. "Why're you yelling at me?"

It was obvious he had no idea what had just happened.

Only moments ago, the creature had been controlling his body.

Now it was gone again.

"You always say~

You're trying to run away~"

Not far away, a Black police officer began humming the next line of the song.

Hobbes didn't even have time to explain.

He immediately sprinted after him.

Right before Hobbes' eyes, the Black officer brushed shoulders with another cop passing nearby.

Then—

"But I'll always be right behind you~"

The second officer continued the song.

He turned his head and gave Hobbes a strange smile before calmly walking out of the station.

Hobbes rushed after him and burst out onto the crowded street outside.

The creature could switch hosts at will.

A simple shoulder bump.

A casual brush against someone in a crowd.

That was all it needed to jump into another body.

"You're progressing too slowly," the creature said while changing bodies four or five times in succession. "I'm starting to get bored…"

"So I've decided to change the rules of the game."

"Stop! Don't move!" Hobbes pushed through the crowd desperately trying to keep up.

The chase continued through the busy street, the creature constantly hopping between people.

Then suddenly—

It stopped.

The creature had possessed a man holding a handgun.

And without the slightest hesitation—

BANG!

Hobbes instantly dove behind cover.

"AAAAAHHH!"

The moment the gunshot rang out, the entire street exploded into chaos.

People screamed and scattered in every direction.

In America, hearing gunfire meant immediate danger.

Because here, almost anyone could own a gun.

And people genuinely got shot dead every day.

The instant shots were fired, everyone's survival instincts kicked in.

Within minutes, the once-crowded street emptied out completely.

Pedestrians fled in panic, hiding behind cars and storefronts, leaving only the gunman possessed by the creature standing alone in the middle of the road.

"What's wrong? Are you scared now?" the creature mocked. "Weren't you chasing me pretty enthusiastically just now? Come out, Hobbes. Don't be afraid…"

"Drop the gun!" Officer Hobbes gritted his teeth, stepping out from behind cover with his own weapon aimed straight at the creature.

"I knew you'd come out," the creature said with a grin. "I've already figured you out completely. And I know you'll shoot."

The possessed man raised the handgun toward Hobbes and pulled the trigger.

BANG!

A gunshot rang out.

The possessed man collapsed backward onto the pavement.

Hobbes held his gun tightly as he cautiously approached the body.

"Hobbes!" Dean finally caught up, arriving a step too late.

"Not that justice won't come~

It's just that the time hasn't arrived yet~"

The familiar singing voice echoed again.

"!!"

Hobbes spun around sharply.

A young girl with her hands in her pockets was casually walking toward them.

Instinctively, Hobbes raised his gun and pointed it at her.

"My, my… Is it really appropriate to point a gun at me like that?" the creature said with a smile.

"A police officer who just shot someone dead… now aiming his weapon at an innocent little girl."

Only then did Hobbes realize what was happening.

The surrounding crowd had already taken out their phones and begun recording.

To ordinary civilians, there was no such thing as a body-hopping monster.

All they saw was a cop who had just killed a man and now seemed unstable enough to threaten a defenseless girl.

If that footage spread online, it would become a public relations disaster for the police department.

Hobbes immediately lowered his weapon.

"You don't seriously believe you killed me just now, do you?" the possessed girl tilted her head toward the corpse on the ground, looking oddly cute despite the horrifying words.

"Killing me isn't that easy."

"No one in this world can kill me."

"So… what are you going to do now?" the creature asked playfully. "Arrest me?"

The girl even extended her hands forward voluntarily.

"You don't dare, do you?"

"You know perfectly well that I'm responsible for everything. But you still don't dare arrest me."

"Because if you did… how would you explain it to your superiors?"

"Would you tell them the truth? That some body-possessing god is jumping from person to person murdering people?"

The creature laughed softly.

"By the time you arrest this innocent girl, I'll already be somewhere else. And then you'll start babbling about ghosts and possession…"

"What do you think happens next?"

"Psych ward?"

"A god?" Dean snapped angrily from the side. "You're just a monster!"

At the same time, Dean glanced uneasily at the surrounding civilians.

If there weren't so many witnesses around, he would've already opened fire.

He had specially prepared silver bullets for this case. Maybe they could hurt the creature.

"Dean, don't come closer!" Hobbes quickly stopped him.

Back at the station, Hobbes had personally witnessed Dean being possessed.

Eddie was already missing after being taken over by the creature.

He couldn't let Dean become another victim.

"Your target is me," Hobbes said through clenched teeth. "So why not just kill me already?"

"Kill you?" the creature repeated with amusement. "Why would I do that?"

"I'm having far too much fun."

"And honestly… aren't you enjoying this too?"

The creature slowly turned around while humming its eerie tune again.

"Not that justice won't come~

It's just that the time hasn't arrived yet~"

Then it walked away into the crowd.

In the distance, police sirens wailed louder and louder.

Since the shooting had happened only a few blocks from the station, backup arrived quickly.

Hobbes remained where he stood, waiting for his fellow officers.

Only now, he was no longer simply one of them.

He had become a suspect.

Still, everyone at the station knew Hobbes personally and trusted his character. No one treated him harshly.

They didn't even handcuff him.

They merely asked him to remain nearby while they investigated the scene and interviewed witnesses.

The shooting itself was straightforward.

There were countless eyewitnesses, along with plenty of cellphone footage proving exactly what had happened.

The man had drawn a weapon first and fired at Hobbes.

Hobbes had returned fire in self-defense.

With that much evidence, there shouldn't have been any serious consequences for him.

At least…

If nothing unexpected happened.

"Officer Hobbes, why did you shoot a civilian in broad daylight?!"

Outside the police barricades, reporters shouted questions frantically, eager to break the story as a major scandal.

Some television stations had already begun live broadcasts.

The police hurried to contain the situation, blocking reporters from getting closer while clearing the scene as quickly as possible.

The corpse was loaded into an ambulance.

Hobbes was escorted back to the station.

Sitting alone in the office, Hobbes stared blankly at the television screen, where news coverage about the shooting was already playing.

Officer Hobbes was famous locally—a star detective.

After capturing Reese, the serial killer later possessed by the creature, Hobbes had become something of a media celebrity and had even appeared in televised interviews.

Now, overnight, that reputation was beginning to crumble.
