Chapter 4 - The Battle Begins

The rider left. But his warning stayed.

Viran knew what came next. He had seen it in his past life, in every corrupt system that crushed those who dared to rise.

Fear first. Then force. Then destruction.

If Lord Drekis wanted control, he wouldn't just send messengers next time.He would send soldiers.

Viran turned back to the villagers.Their expressions were mixed. Some looked ready. Some looked afraid.

He understood both.

"Keep working," he said simply. "We finish the well. Then the roads. Then the farms."

A farmer hesitated. "But what if they burn it down?"

Viran's eyes were steady.

"Then we build it again."

No hesitation. No fear.

Just progress and progress never stops.

[First Leadership Milestone Achieved.

Territorial Growth +5%

New Module Unlocked: Defense Initiation]

Viran exhaled slowly.

Now it was more than just a village. Now—it was a fight.

The air in the village had changed. Not with words. Not with speeches. But with movement.

People who had once only gathered to obey tax collectors were now gathering for a reason of their own.

To protect what they had built.

Viran stood at the edge of the well, watching as villagers worked around him.

Some finished stacking the last stones for reinforcement.Others checked the wooden supports, making sure they would hold against weather.

And a smaller group of former hunters, blacksmith apprentices, even teenage boys with sharp eyes all gathered near a pile of old farming tools.

Not weapons.

Yet.

[Defense Initiative Activated.

Current Threat Level: Moderate

First Tactical Proposal Ready]

A new panel flickered into view.

Not just a blueprint for construction, but something entirely different.

The first true plan for protection.

[DEFENSE PANEL]

Fortification: Minimal

Village Readiness: 26%

Estimated Time Until Noble Retaliation: 4-7 Days

Suggested Preparations:

▸Trap Layering Around Key Entry Points(Not Started)

▸Recruitment of First Guard Unit(0/10 Selected)

▸Basic Alarm System Setup(Pending Activation)

Viran's hands clenched.This wasn't just survival now.

It was war in its smallest form—the battle between those who take and those who build.

He turned to the gathered men.

"This isn't about fighting like soldiers," he said. "It's about thinking ahead."

The men glanced at each other.

A younger one stepped forward—maybe eighteen, sharp-faced, with lean muscles from farm work.

"I don't know how to fight," he admitted. "Never touched a sword."

Viran nodded. "Good. That means you won't fight stupidly."

Some chuckled. Others frowned.

Viran continued.

"We aren't warriors," he said. "We don't have armor or gold. But what we have is our land, our tools, and our minds. And I know how to use them."

The silence was different now.Not doubtful.

Interested.

He turned back to the System interface.

Traps first. Then alarm signals.

Every defense should look like normal village life.

That way, when Lord Drekis sent men, they wouldn't realize the trap until it was too late.

Viran exhaled slowly.

This was how civilizations won.

With knowledge. Not brute force.

Viran stood at the center of the village, eyes scanning the land.

The System had already mapped out weak points—the entrances, the paths most likely to be used in an attack, even the spots where soldiers might gather.

But soldiers expected resistance in the form of swords and arrows. They wouldn't expect the land itself to fight back.

[TRAP PLANNING MODULE]

▸Pitfall Traps at Key Entry Points(Progress: 10%)

▸Hidden Spike Layers Beneath Loose Soil(Progress: 0%)

▸False Safe Zones to Redirect Enemy Movement(Not Started)

Viran turned to the group of men gathered behind him.

"I need the strongest ones to dig," he said. "The fastest to set warning markers. And the smartest… to help me plan where they'll step first."

A burly man with thick arms frowned. "We don't have weapons."

Viran picked up a rope.

"We don't need them."

The digging started. Carefully. Quietly.

Shallow pits were covered with thin wooden slats and loose dirt. Twigs were arranged to look like solid ground.

From the surface, the land looked normal.

But when the time came, it wouldn't be.

The sky dimmed, and torches were lit around the village.

Some villagers worked on finishing the well, but others—the ones who understood the real danger—were focused elsewhere.

And for the first time in history, a village wasn't preparing to bow,it was preparing to stand.

The night was quiet.Too quiet.

Viran stood near the well, his hands resting lightly against the stone. His eyes scanned the land—the shadows, the roads, the fields beyond the village.

He wasn't waiting for dawn.He was waiting for them.

The nobles wouldn't let this stand. Lord Drekis wouldn't ignore this act of defiance.

The soldiers were coming and Viran was ready.

The System pulsed in his mind.

[Hostile Movement Detected.

Approximate Arrival: 30 Minutes

Defense Protocol Adjusting…...]

Viran exhaled slowly.

"This is it," he murmured.

The village had no warriors. No walls. No armor. But it had traps. Plans. Minds sharpened by survival and most of all—it had something to protect now.

That was more powerful than any sword.

Torches flickered in the distance.

The villagers saw them first. Their breaths grew sharp, their hands clenched. Some moved toward their homes, gripping their families close. Others stood firm near the well, hearts pounding.

Fear wasn't gone. But it wasn't controlling them anymore.

Viran's voice was calm when he spoke.

"Stay quiet."

The flames grew closer.
