Chapter 108 - Chapter 99 — What We Choose to Do

They slept little that night.

The woman's words stayed with them, the empty house, the quiet fear in her voice, the way she kept looking at the door as if someone was going to break through it at any second.

Vivi lay awake staring at the ceiling of the small room they'd rented near the port. She could hear Kaya's breathing beside her, uneven, restless. Robin sat by the window, eyes half-lidded, listening to the town.

No music.

No laughter.

Only wave sounds and footsteps are heard from afar.

"This island is ill," said Vivi in a hushed tone.

Robin didn't turn away from the window. "Yes."

Kaya shifted, sitting up. "But sickness can be treated… right?"

Neither answered immediately.

To date, the specific photosynthetic mechanisms associated with such high solar radiation have not been clearly identified.

*Morning Decisions*

The tension hadn't let up by morning.

If anything, it felt heavier.

They walked through the town again, more slowly this time. Watching. Listening.

Children sat listlessly near doorways, not playing. A woman stirred a thin pot of soup that hardly smelled like food. A man with a limp tugged at a crate, easily twice his weight, because no one else was able to help him.

Vivi's fists curled.

"They're all starving," she whispered. "All of them."

Kaya swallowed. "And they're scared."

Robin watched in silence. "Fear has rules here. People know where they can stand. Where they can speak. Where they can't."

Rael walked a few steps behind them, silent. Watching how they reacted. Watching what they noticed.

Vivi stopped suddenly. "We can't just leave."

Kaya nodded immediately. "We can't."

Robin closed her eyes for a brief moment. "…Intervening will make us targets."

Vivi turned to her, "They already are."

Robin opened her eyes again. "Then we should be careful. Not reckless."

Rael spoke up finally. "Good. Talk it out."

They all turned to him.

"I'm not deciding this for you," he went on. "This is your choice. If you're about to die, I'll step in. Otherwise, I'm watching."

That made Vivi's heart run.

But it also steadied her.

"Then I say we help," Vivi said. "Not by charging in. But by pushing back."

Kaya nodded, her hand tightening on her cane. "Little by little."

Robin's eyes flickered with the serene light of violent determination. He thought for a moment. "We start with awareness. Find out who controls this place."

Rael smiled faintly. "Then begin."

The operational definition is applied to quantify and name events or properties of interest: a variable is a characteristic, attribute, or property of an object that can assume different values.

The First Pushback

They did not have to search for a very long period.

The scene near the market square depicted four pirates collecting food without any promise of payment or negotiation, just hands grasping and threats uttered with casual levity.

One of them pushed an old man aside.

She stepped forward before thinking.

"Hey."

The pirate turned, irritated. "Mind your—"

Robin's arms wrapped around his legs and slammed him face-first into the ground.

The other three reacted quickly.

Too fast.

Kaya's heart pounded, but she remembered the steps. She shifted and redirected, her cane cracking into one pirate's knee.

He yelled.

Vivi moved as Rael taught her, low and quick. Her strike wasn't powerful, but it found its mark.

The last pirate froze.

People were watching now.

The pirate ran.

Robin let the old man loose, pulling him to his feet with gentle courtesy. "Go."

He stared at them as if they weren't real. Then he bowed very deeply, flung around, and hurried away.

Kaya breathed out choppily, her legs trembling. "My legs are shaking."

Vivi laughed shakily. "Mine, too."

Rael leaned against a wall close by. "You didn't panic. That matters."

## *Resistance Spreads*

The word spread quickly.

Not loud, but quick.

By noon, they could feel it. Eyes watching them differently now. Not just fear.

Hope.

A shopkeeper furtively handed Vivi a chunk of bread. "For later."

A woman nodded to Kaya as she passed. "Thank you."

Robin noticed something else.

"They're watching us like a signal," she said. "If we stand, maybe they can too."

Rael's voice was calm. "That's the dangerous part."

They knew it.

Still, none of them budged when another group of pirates tried dragging a boy away near the docks.

That fight was messier.

Vivi took a hit and stumbled.

Rael moved in the instant she was looking too quickly to be seen clearly; the pirate flew back, smashing into crates.

Vivi blinked. "I didn't even see—"

"Focus," Rael said. "Finish it."

She did.

With evening, the town felt changed.

Still broken.

But no longer silent.

-

That Night

They went back to the woman's house.

She burst into tears when she saw them.

"They didn't come today," she whispered, "For the first time in weeks."

Kaya smiled softly. "That's good."

"It's dangerous," Robin said softly. "But change always is."

Rael stood near the door again, watching the girls talk to comfort, promise nothing they couldn't keep.

They were tired, bruised, still learning.

And they were standing.

And it felt that the island was doing. Somewhere deeper in town, unseen eyes narrowed. Resistance had started.
