Chapter 10 - The Pep Rally

Friday meant Pep Rally. Oakridge's gymnasium thundered with noise – pounding music, stomping feet, the cheer squad's frenetic energy. The air crackled with pre-game excitement for the big football match against Riverview High. Brad Jenkins, padded up in his #22 jersey, basked in the adoration near the team bench, high-fiving fans. Li sat high in the bleachers, observing. The "Cerebral Gladiator" rep meant kids didn't crowd him, but they glanced his way, whispering.

[MAJOR EVENT: SPIRIT CHALLENGE]

Objective: Participate meaningfully in a Pep Rally event to solidify school connection and reputation. Bonus: Outperform Brad Jenkins in a non-violent challenge.

Reward: +300 XP, +2 CHA (Charisma - Hidden Stat!), Reputation: "True Oakridge Eagle", Skill: [Crowd Presence Lv.1] (Minor boost to persuasion/impact when addressing groups)

Failure: Reputation: "Spiritless Loner" (Social penalty)

Participate? Meaningfully? Li wasn't a cheerleader. He couldn't do backflips. The principal called for volunteers for the "Eagle Eye Challenge" – a silly contest where participants had to spot a tiny stuffed eagle mascot hidden somewhere in the gym using binoculars... backwards.

It was perfect. PER: 14 (after the Level 7 boost)! [Situational Awareness Lv.1]! Brad, eager for more spotlight, swaggered up as a volunteer. Li stood and walked down the bleachers. A murmur ran through the crowd. The Calculator vs The Jock?

They stood side-by-side on the gym floor, handed backward binoculars. The crowd roared. "BRAD! BRAD! BRAD!" Li heard a few tentative "Li!"s. He blocked it out, focusing. The binoculars were disorienting, shrinking the distant gym. But Li didn't panic. He used his heightened PER systematically, scanning sections. He noticed a slight shimmer near the top of the folded-up bleachers – sunlight catching synthetic fur? [Situational Awareness] confirmed: an anomaly.

Brad was flailing, turning wildly, complaining the binoculars were broken. Li slowly raised his arm, pointing steadily towards the bleacher seam. "There. Top row, left section, tucked behind the support beam."

The teacher running the event scrambled up, reached in, and pulled out the tiny stuffed eagle. The crowd gasped, then erupted in surprised cheers. "LI WEI! LI WEI! LI WEI!" The chant grew, rivaling Brad's earlier one. Brad stood frozen, face a mask of disbelief and humiliation, clutching his backward binoculars like useless toys.

Li accepted the stuffed eagle, a small, genuine smile on his face. He held it up, not triumphantly over Brad, but towards the cheering students. He didn't say a word. He didn't need to. The point was made. Loud and clear.

[MAJOR EVENT: SPIRIT CHALLENGE - COMPLETE! (Bonus Objective Achieved!)]

Reward Claimed: +300 XP, +2 CHA (Charisma Unlocked! CHA: 8 -> 10!), Reputation: "True Oakridge Eagle", Skill: [Crowd Presence Lv.1]

Level Progress: Level 7 (325/700 XP)

A new warmth bloomed in Li's chest, different from stat boosts. Confidence. Belonging. The "True Oakridge Eagle" rep felt solid. He saw Sarah Kim grinning, giving him a thumbs-up. Even some football players looked impressed. Brad was being consoled by his coach, but his eyes, when they met Li's, held pure, impotent rage.

Li walked back to the bleachers, the chants still echoing. He wasn't just surviving Oakridge. He wasn't just fighting back. He was becoming part of it. On his own terms. With brains, with calculated courage, and now, with a flicker of charisma. The underdog hadn't just climbed out of the hole; he was standing tall on the mound, looking down at the bewildered bulldog who used to chase him. The game had changed. And Li Wei was just getting started. The system panel glowed softly, new possibilities unfolding. Next challenge? Maybe he'd set it himself.
