Chapter 42 - Chapter 42 : The One Who Wasn't There

Riko

The walk back from school was quiet.

Riko wore her uniform jacket unzipped, arms folded behind her head. It was the first time in days that she felt… normal. Just a girl walking home with her strange, broken, powerful older brothers.

Geto walked beside her with a bag of drinks, already warm from the sun. Gojo had his blindfold pushed up to his forehead and was complaining about vending machines. Kishibe trailed behind, half-asleep, bandaged but healing.

It felt peaceful.

It felt wrong.

Riko blinked and looked back.

Kishibe had stopped walking.

His hand hovered just slightly above his belt.

"Something's off," he muttered.

Gojo laughed. "It's a sunny day. You okay, old man?"

Kishibe's brow twitched. He scanned the empty street.

Then slowly drew his blade.

---

Geto

The atmosphere flipped.

No cursed energy. Nothing detectable. But Kishibe's instincts weren't wrong.

Geto stepped closer to Riko.

"Stay by my side."

Even Gojo had gone quiet now.

Then they heard it.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Footsteps on asphalt.

---

Toji

The man in black slacks and a short-sleeve shirt strolled into view. Hair tied back. Sunglasses low on his nose. A single scar across his mouth.

He looked like a man on his way to lunch.

Except every instinct screamed wrong.

Gojo stared at him.

Geto couldn't feel anything.

Kishibe whispered, "That's no sorcerer."

Toji raised his hand lazily. "Yo."

"Identify yourself," Gojo called out.

"Sure," the man said.

And vanished.

---

The Ambush

It happened in less than a second.

One blink—

And Kishibe barely blocked the first attack. Steel rang against metal—Toji's dagger screeched off Kishibe's blade, and both men reeled from the impact.

Gojo was gone.

Teleporting—

No.

Thrown.

Toji had flickered behind him and kicked him into a building before he could activate Infinity.

Dust exploded from the impact.

Geto dropped a curse between Toji and Riko—a four-legged obsidian beast.

Toji dodged without looking. One smooth pivot. One strike. The beast split in half.

"MOVE!" Geto shouted.

Kishibe lunged again—this time coordinated with a second slash. A feint. Then a real cut. His cursed energy sharpened into a micro-serrated edge.

Toji blocked with a curve of his blade, twisted the wrist, and disarmed him with one fluid, absurdly fast motion.

"You've got good instincts," Toji said.

Then he cut across Kishibe's chest with the back end of the sword, sending him skidding into a telephone pole.

---

Riko's Terror

She couldn't run.

Every muscle locked up.

Kishibe was on the ground. Gojo hadn't stood up. Geto looked shaken.

And this man wasn't even sweating.

"Who the hell are you?" Geto said, summoning another curse.

Toji smiled.

"Just a hitman. Nothing personal."

And then he moved again.

---

Gojo – Infinity Wakes

He stood, coughing blood.

But the second time Toji lunged—

Infinity was active.

Toji's blade stopped inches from his eye.

Gojo's grin widened, wild and cracked.

"Not bad."

He grabbed Toji by the wrist, activating Blue at point-blank range.

The building behind Toji exploded inward—vacuum tearing apart rebar and concrete.

Toji slid free, flipping backwards across the street and landing without a sound.

"Damn," he said, chuckling. "You're quick."

Gojo wiped blood from his mouth.

"You're dead."

---

Kishibe – Rising Again

Despite the pain, Kishibe stood.

Shoulder cracked. Blood down his ribs. He didn't care.

He walked to Riko's side, blade back in hand.

"You run when I say run," he told her.

She nodded, barely breathing.

Toji looked between them—Gojo, Geto, Kishibe.

The Monster Trio

And he just smiled.

"I'm gonna kill all three of you," he said, easy like it was fact.

"And then I'm taking the girl."
