Chapter 4 - CHAPTER FOUR

CHAPTER FOUR

When the young master of the Brunswick family, Drew, saw Amelia standing frozen by the door, he figured she might just be scared. So, he decided to break the stillness of the room. "What's your last name?" he asked, his voice calm and clear. It was a gentle voice, but it had a certain power that made you want to listen.

Amelia gave a small cough and looked down. She felt like she had been staring too much, which wasn't polite. "Uh... my last name is Thomas. Here's my business card." She fumbled in her bag for a moment before handing him a small white card.

Drew took the card without even looking at it. "Amelia, you can start right now," he said, his tone showing no emotion.

Amelia shot him a quick glance, then set her things down.

You see, Amelia hadn't always done this kind of work. When she was pregnant with her three babies, she had quit her old job. But after the triplets were born, she learned this new skill from her kind old neighbor, Helen. At first, Amelia just helped Helen with her clients. But soon, Helen noticed Amelia had a real knack for it and taught her everything she knew.

Helen was really good at helping people with broken bones and injuries. But lately, she had gotten older and didn't have the energy to take on many clients anymore. That's how Amelia ended up here.

This wasn't Amelia's first time working on someone, but today, she felt extra nervous. Especially with Drew Brunswick's assistant, Billy Jim, watching her so closely. It was like he was afraid she might do something to hurt Drew.

After a few hours of carefully checking Drew's leg and doing some gentle procedures, the session finally ended.

Amelia let out a quiet sigh of relief.

As she started packing her things, she spoke up. "The best time for these sessions is about an hour. I'll be back later tonight. When I was looking at Mr. Brunswick's leg, I noticed his muscles were very tight. It seems he hasn't fully recovered from his accident. I want you to know that after a few weeks of special treatment, he should start feeling much better."

"Feeling better?" Billy, who had been standing nearby, looked at Amelia with an unsure expression. It was like he was wondering if she really knew what she was talking about. "Are you saying Mr. Brunswick's leg will actually get better?"

Amelia seemed a little surprised by his question. She raised an eyebrow before replying, "I think that's why I'm here, to help Mr. Brunswick get better and make his legs feel good again."

Hearing her words, Billy nodded slowly. He looked at Drew, who was sitting quietly, then back at Amelia. "If Mr. Brunswick's legs really do get better, we would be very thankful and reward you generously." To be honest, they had tried so many different treatments, but nothing had worked so far. They had called her today without much hope, but maybe, just maybe, a miracle could happen.

All they truly hoped was that Amelia wasn't just going to waste their time for the sake of making money.

Amelia stepped out of the room when she was done, and Stephanie Jarrett was waiting for her by the door. "Have you had breakfast? You can grab something to eat before you leave," Stephanie suggested kindly.

"I have to pass, thank you," Amelia replied. "Sheila is waiting for me back home. I need to get back very quickly, but I'll come back later."

"Running around like this must be a bit of a bother for you, huh?" Stephanie asked.

"Not really. It's Saturday, so the traffic shouldn't be too bad." With her three children at home, Amelia always felt a little worried when she was away, even for a short time.

"That's good to hear," Stephanie said with a smile.

It was Amelia's first time visiting the Brunswick family's home, and she wasn't very familiar with the huge place. The driver had parked at the back, and now Stephanie was leading her out through the front door.

As they stepped into the enormous yard, Amelia saw a couple walking in from outside. To her surprise, it was her ex-husband, Michael Vicks, and his new wife, Gloria Lin.

She couldn't help but wonder, what in the world were they doing here?

Gloria was holding Michael's arm, and he seemed to be carrying her handbag. They looked so in love and happy together, especially since they had just gotten married.

Even though Amelia had long stopped caring about Michael, she couldn't help but feel a strange twist in her stomach at the sight.

She now regretted that when she divorced him, she didn't manage to get the house.

At that time, she had just given birth to her triplets and was very weak. She had no energy to fight him for anything. He had always kept the records about their artificial insemination, and after they broke up, he hid them all away. Even if she told her family, they wouldn't believe her; they thought she was just making up excuses for not being able to have children.

After the divorce, he spent his days spreading bad rumors about her, saying their split was because she had cheated. Surprisingly, many of their friends believed him, and some even stopped talking to her.

Michael Vicks had only recently gotten married, and he was accompanying his wife to see her grandparents. But what he never expected was to run into his ex-wife.

When he saw Amelia, his face instantly turned dark.

He wondered what she was doing here and what kind of bad luck she was going to bring him today.

Could it be that she had found out about his marriage to Gloria Lin and was perhaps here to get revenge?

Gloria Lin came from a wealthy family, and if Amelia dared to ruin his marriage with her, he would make sure she paid dearly.

Stephanie Jarrett saw the two entering and greeted them warmly. "Mrs. Gloria, Mr. Vicks, welcome home."

"Hi, Stephanie," Gloria Lin responded, acting exactly like a spoiled young lady.

Her eyes landed on Amelia, who seemed to be staring intently at Michael Vicks. Michael was quite handsome, and many women were attracted to him because of his looks.

However, seeing Amelia stare at her husband didn't bother Gloria Lin at all. There were plenty of women who were interested in her husband, but she was confident that he only had eyes for her. She knew that her husband would never be interested in a woman like Amelia. So, she felt very secure.

Turning to Amelia, Gloria asked Stephanie Jarrett, "Is she a new maid around here?"

Stephanie responded, "No, this is Amelia, and she is here to take care of young master's legs."

"Oh, I see!" Gloria honestly didn't know much about leg injuries, but since her uncle had health problems, people often came to the house, and she didn't know all of them.

Michael Vicks narrowed his eyes and looked at Stephanie Jarrett. "Are you sure she's trustworthy? Don't just bring anyone into the house. If something happens to young master, she won't be able to pay for any harm."

He had just gotten married yesterday, and he didn't believe it was a coincidence that his ex-wife had shown up here to work.

For years, she had been trying to contact him about getting the house while causing all sorts of trouble. Others might not know, but Michael didn't believe for a second that she was really here for the job. Most likely, she was just trying to get something from him, maybe even to hurt him.

That was why his tone was much harsher than usual.

Gloria stared at her husband in confusion. She had always thought of him as a gentle and polite man, someone who treated the people who worked in the house with kindness. So, seeing him act so unkindly towards Amelia surprised her. "Darling, she's just trying to earn a living. Why are you being so harsh on her?"

"Babe, you're being too kind. There are a lot of bad people out there who would do anything for money. Just look at her - does she look like she can do this job?"

Amelia stared at her ex-husband. For a moment, he seemed to be attacking her, as if she owed him billions of dollars. If she didn't clearly remember everything he had done to her over the past few years, she might actually believe that she owed him something.

She let out a laugh, which even made Michael look at her in confusion. "I think Mrs. Gloria should be the careful one because there are plenty of men out there who marry women for their money. Not only stealing their money but playing with their feelings. She should be very careful."
