Chapter 129 - A Fight

Two groups of black prairie wolves engaged in a battle for territory. Kevin discovered that one of them was the same intelligent and funny wolves he knew who could speak human language. Perhaps because he had a husky at home that was somewhat wolf-related, Kevin felt a kinship with these playful black wolves. Seeing Becky beside him, her hand on the hilt of her sword, ready to charge in and kill at any moment, he quickly restrained the girl: "Wait a minute, there's someone I know in there... uh, a wolf."

Becky frowned at Kevin: "Did you fall so badly?"

"I really didn't break my brain!" Kevin was almost driven crazy by this question, but he managed to calm down. "I've dealt with one of the wolves before. You wait a minute. I'll go up and say hello, and then you'll follow my instructions."

With that, Kevin leaped out of the small mound. Becky only had time to open her mouth and let out an "eh!" before she could only hold back the rest of her words: "Why should I listen to you?" By then, Kevin had already sprinted to the edge of the hollow and ran toward the wolf king he knew. His brazen actions naturally didn't escape the eyes of these keenly sensed beasts. The wolf king and several nearby black wolves suddenly turned their heads, and Kevin heard a leaky black wolf yell in horror, "Boss... Boss... Boss! That tough guy's back again!"

Kevin nearly fell headfirst. He felt the black wolves' ability to craft words was simply amazing.

"Don't panic! I'm here to help!" Kevin greeted the wolf king from a distance. His reasoning was simple: their acquaintance was fate. Although there had been a misunderstanding at the beginning, these wolves had helped him somewhat after that (the wolf king had personally provided him with transportation). Now that they were fighting with another group of strangers, it made sense for him to lend a hand. "Are you okay?" the wolf king was surprised to see Kevin. "I went to check the next day, and the hurricane swept away the entire village. I thought you were dead." Kevin was a little scared when he thought of the terrifying hurricane. He shrank his neck. "That's what I was just about to ask. What's with the hurricane?"

"I don't know. Strange things often happen on this grassland. It's said that it was once an ancient battlefield. The fallen mages still chant spells underground, and that's how the occasional hurricanes and lightning appear," the wolf king shook his massive head. "We almost got swept up in the hurricane's tail that night, but luckily we caught it early. We were running like crazy, and I swallowed a mouthful of sand."

"Such strange things happen on this grassland?" Kevin was shocked. "Hasn't this been inhabited? Is this environment habitable?"

"It's not like something happens every day," the wolf king grinned. "If you're lucky, you can live in one place for hundreds of days and nights without encountering one. Of course, if you're unlucky, you'll get struck by lightning every few days and nights. And the humans on the grassland use those strange tools they have to predict these strange events. I think they're called magic disks... We rely on instinct."

"This place is full of strange things," Kevin marveled. He looked up at the wolves still fighting. The opposing black wolves had clearly noticed him, a human. Several black wolves watching the battle stared at them, growling menacingly with menacing expressions. "Is that the... primitive wolf pack you were talking about?"

"Yes, a bunch of dumb idiots," the wolf king growled. "And you dare to challenge us for territory? They don't even know what a battle formation is..."

Kevin was stunned. "...You know how to battle formations? I don't think your pack has any formations."

"Our leader found a human book the other day and learned this term. Then, today, he brought us out to 'defend our homeland,'" said a black wolf with a hint of treacherousness. "Actually, this territory was taken over by an alien wolf pack last month. We've been too lazy to take care of it, but the leader says it learned a sense of honor from a human book."

"You can even read?!" Kevin stared at the wolf king in even greater astonishment. "A little bit, a little bit," the wolf king nodded modestly. "When I was a wolf cub, I met a strange old human. He taught me to read and write and even had me learn to hold a plate. But as I grew older, he realized I wasn't a dog, so he let me go."

Kevin was silent for two seconds. Deciding not to continue exchanging yet another absurd story with this idiot, he rolled up his sleeves and leaped down the slope toward the battlefield: "I'll help you fight first, we'll talk about everything else later!"

Watching Kevin literally charge into the wolf pack's fray, the Wolf King was stunned. He stuck out his tongue and said, "Why is this human so strange... Is he really here to help fight?"

The Wolf King had seen many humans in his life, born with intelligence and the ability to speak, and had interacted with many. But he had never seen Kevin communicate with a wolf like this: other humans had clearly spoken to him as if they were "talking to an animal." No matter how intelligent the animal was, it was still an animal. But this surprisingly tough human didn't show that at all when speaking to him. It was a completely natural, equal conversation, just like a person communicating with another, just like he was communicating with his pups.

As a wolf, the Wolf King didn't have the complex emotions of humans. He simply thought Kevin was... quite interesting. By this time, Kevin had already charged headfirst into the battlefield, his entire body covered in rigid shields, like a descending god of war (or so he thought). He recalled how he'd been frightened to the point of cramping his calves when he encountered a few wolves the previous month. Reflecting on his prowess today, he too found it incredible. The surrounding wolves were even more astonished, most of them thinking, "What the hell is this human doing jumping in here?"

But the pack soon split into two factions. One faction knew Kevin. They knew this human was as tough as a city wall, so they immediately turned and ran away with a howl. The other faction, the primitive beasts who didn't recognize Kevin, now acted on instinct and pounced fiercely!

Instantly, a series of crisp "crackling" sounds filled the air. The few unlucky ones around the wolf king, with their broken teeth, felt a pain in their mouths at the familiar sound. Their fur stood on end, and they collectively turned their heads away, not daring to look directly at the horrific scene. Kevin swung his arm, flinging a few blood-stained wretches over ten meters away. He then kicked another in his sight, only to hear a cry of pain: "One of us! I was just watching!"

Kevin: "... Wolf Boss, can you tell those idiots to stay away?!"

The Wolf King roared: "You guys, help out on the flanks! Second Squad, seal off the battlefield and don't let the enemy escape! Reserves, form a defensive formation!"

At the Wolf King's command, the pack's fighting spirit soared: "Boss, what's a flank?" "Boss, what's Second Squad?" "Captain, what's a defensive formation?"

A commanding voice echoed from within the pack: "Don't ask. Boss's been obsessed with reading again these past few days. As usual, he's picking on anyone he doesn't like."

The wolves roared in agreement: "Roar!"

The battle situation suddenly became clear. The hapless primitive wolf pack was no match for the shrewd super wolves to begin with, and now a "tough guy" stronger than a city wall rushed in. After breaking a dozen teeth, they were completely routed by the onrushing wolves, and scattered in many waves in all directions. The wolf king saw this and became anxious: "Stop them! Stop as many as you can! Otherwise, they will come back sooner or later!"

Kevin immediately shouted to the small mound in the distance: "Becky! Time to make some extra money!"

As soon as he finished speaking, a figure like lightning leaped from the mound. Becky drew her sword and rushed towards the largest group of fleeing black wolves. Kevin noticed that the blade of her sword was emitting a scorching red light, and the edge of the red light was wrapped with a tangible wind pressure! Becky streaked across the battlefield like a whirlwind, her blades whirling as she spun, a ferocious whirlwind of metal. As she spun, nothing was visible except a cloud of grass, dirt, and the remains of wolves.

The talking wolves exclaimed in shock, "A tough guy even brought a swordsman!"

Kevin: "..."

He felt like his acquaintance with these idiots had been a mistake from the beginning.
