Chapter 115 - The Siren

"Have we met before?" Nangong Wuyue's curiosity flared at Kevin's words. She looked at him, then couldn't help but linger on Yzaks (emphasized, his Chinese name is Wang Daquan). She slapped her head, "Oh, right! You're those two stingy guys!"

Kevin followed suit with a slap on his forehead: "You're the singer!"

The two of them exchanged glances, and Nangong Wuyue's previous politeness and reserve instantly vanished by at least two-thirds. She gave Kevin a dry laugh and nodded: "Well... Landlord, please don't mind what I just said..."

Kevin was used to living with these scoundrels, so why would he be bothered by such blunt words? He simply felt it was a coincidence. Could this be fate? The Nangong Wuyue before him was none other than the singing girl he had seen at the intersection while he and Yzaks were out shopping a few days ago! Kevin still remembered her singing as beautiful, with lyrics that were a mess...

It was just that their last meeting was during the day, and this time it was at night. Plus, Kevin had a hard time remembering strangers' faces, so she hadn't recognized them for quite a while. And Y'zaks, for that matter, was even more oblivious. The great demon was always slow to recognize human features; it took him several days to memorize Vivian and Lily's appearances. Nangong Wuyue had only a fleeting glance at Kevin and Y'zaks that day. If it weren't for the latter's impressive two-meter height, she probably wouldn't have remembered them until now. "What a coincidence," Kevin chuckled, inviting Nangong Wuyue to take a seat at the table. "It's just that we haven't eaten yet, and there's a lot of leftovers from lunch, and I'm worried about what to eat tonight... Come and eat together, it's a welcome dinner for you. It's customary here. Regardless of race or origin, once you sit down at the table, you become family."

Vivian quickly brought the hot meals to the table and curiously inquired about Kevin's acquaintance with Nangong Wuyue. Kevin briefly recounted the events of that day, concluding, "I suspect that Raven is behind this again..."

With the exception of Nangong Wuyue, who was unfamiliar with Raven 12345, everyone present agreed.

Kevin still felt Nangong Wuyue's appearance was rather unexpected, but given Raven 12345's usual behavior, he had no choice but to accept it. He soon discovered that the girl who called herself a siren was very easy to get along with, even easier than Vivian and Lily, the first two visitors. This was probably because siren, as a peaceful race, had no aversion to other species in the world. Just think of the sirens who were taken away by humans over a hundred years ago...

After dinner, Kevin and Vivian helped Nangong Wuyue unpack her luggage. The new tenant's room was the first one on the second floor, near the stairs. Since it was fully furnished and Vivian cleaned it regularly, they could basically move in with just their luggage. The entire settling-in process took only a few minutes. Once everything was settled, Nangong Wuyue was dragged into the living room by Lily. The Husky girl began to curiously inquire about her new companion. This seemed quite rude to Vivian, but as for Husky personalities... you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

"Actually, I should have come to you two days ago," Nangong Wuyue said, unfazed by Lily's familiarity and overly enthusiastic manner. She answered all the questions with a smile and took the initiative to describe her experiences here. "The landlord just mentioned that I sing on the streets. Actually, I've always been singing while traveling. For many years, I was wandering around the world without a fixed place. Until two weeks ago, every night I've had dreams of a very beautiful woman who tells me something and asks me to come to this city to find an 'investigator' named Kevin. At first, I thought I was dreaming, but eventually I started to believe it and realized I really needed a place to stay. So I came here. I arrived last week, but I wandered around the city for a few days at first... Hehe, I only remembered to come to you today."

The way she spoke sounded like an ordinary singing girl recounting her life experiences. If Kevin hadn't already known the situation, it would have been difficult for him to connect this seemingly ordinary girl with the legendary race of "Sirens." "Traveling and singing at the same time..." Lily's eyes lit up inexplicably after hearing Nangong Wuyue's story. This artistic Husky instantly resonated with this kind of life. "It feels a bit like me! I write while traveling, but I think you're a bit more capable. After all, it's not easy to make a living singing. I tried it for a while, and I got complaints every day."

Kevin immediately recalled Lily's signature three-part singing routine, "Ooo-Woo-Woo," and stopped asking further questions. "It's not so bad, actually," Nangong Wuyue smiled faintly. "Sirens have a talent for this. When my mother was alive, she often taught me to sing. It's said that's how she attracted my father. Besides, I do other things, too. I can work when I need to make ends meet."

"Where are you from?" Vivian, seeing Nangong Wuyue happily chatting with Lily, didn't hide her curiosity. "Your accent sounds a bit strange."

"Did you pick that up?" Nangong Wuyue smiled. "My hometown is indeed in China, but I've been traveling for a few years."

"Because they come from the vast ocean, sirens and their descendants who come ashore love to travel. It seems there's truth to that." Vivian looked at Nangong Wuyue with interest. "So, do you plan to stay here long-term, or will you continue traveling after a while?"

"I don't know," Nangong Wuyue shook her head. "Probably until I feel like traveling again. I occasionally stay in one place for a few years. This time, I was exhausted from traveling, so I decided to take a break. And then a beautiful sister came to me in a dream, so I came here."

At this moment, Vivian winked at Kevin, and the two of them quietly stepped aside.

"Is this Nangong Wuyue okay?" Vivian asked quietly.

"She's fine. She does have the Raven's token, and the data terminal has verified her identity. Although she arrived unexpectedly, she's indeed our new member."

"...Honestly, I feel like we're an illegal organization. We're so nervous about a new member," Vivian stuck out her tongue. "Landlord, aren't you working for a goddess? Can't you ask for improved working conditions?"

"How can I improve them?" Kevin sighed. "Raven 12345 has explicitly ordered me not to arbitrarily interfere with human social order. Otherwise, I'd be guilty of obstructing the development of civilization. Look at that stern charge. Oh, by the way, I'd like to ask you, what kind of race are the Sirens? This Nangong Wuyue seems... just like an ordinary person to me. From the way she speaks to her behavior, she's very different from you, Lily, and Y'zaks." Vivian pondered for a moment. "Sirens... Honestly, I don't know much about them. They're a very strange race, quite mysterious even for the category of the alien. Sirens live in the deep sea and are quite ancient. It's said they lived there before humans even appeared on this planet, but they've never expanded their territory. Even though they have the ability to survive on land and have a certain level of combat capability, they've always stayed deep underwater. There are rumors that they're guarding something from their ancestors... But because this race is so reclusive, few people know the truth. Also, siren are a race comprised entirely of women. Their lifespans are as long as the ocean itself, and they can increase their numbers through mysterious rituals, so they don't have to worry about reproduction. That's all I know."

Kevin pondered: "What's the deal with being seduced by a human?" Vivian's expression froze. "Why are you so interested... Well, it's just the literal meaning. Sirens have the ability to come ashore and change their life forms to mate with humans. They're also curious about human males. Given this premise, there have been many cases throughout history of Sirens coming ashore, cleverly disguised, and mating with humans to produce offspring. However, there's a problem with the offspring of Sirens and humans: if it's a girl, it's 100% a siren, and if it's a boy, it's 100% human. There's no chance of hybrids. I personally feel like this is like a 'female curse' afflicting the entire species."

"That's why Nangong Wuyue only mentioned her mother as a siren," Kevin said, seemingly understanding. "Girls take after their mothers, and boys take after their fathers. Tsk tsk, you aliens really have a lot of weirdos."

In any case, the siren Nangong Wuyue moved in.
